Roadfood Meetup in Savannah, GA February 24th to 26th?

Hello Roadfooders,

I am starting this thread to gauge interest in a possible Roadfood meetup in the garden city of Savannah, GA.  Last year's winter eating event in Jacksonville and St. Augustine was a huge success.  The crew enjoyed some phenomenal food in some gorgeous settings (anyone remember that sunset at the Saltwater Cowboys?  Wow!).

As for the dates, I chose them because they work for some of the key players here on Roadfood.  If this trip happens, it will have a similar type of itinerary like we had last year.  Each day will only have three or four key stops.  This will allow participants to relax, sight see (Savannah has a ton of tourist sites), or just eat at even more places if you have an appetite like the ChiTownDiner.

Where are we going to eat?  Well, folks, I've already been bugging chickenplucker about that very question.  He came up with a solid starter list for me.  Some are familiar names while others I have never heard of before:

Leopold's Ice Cream
Sandfly BBQ and the Streamliner
Zunzi's Takeout, was featured on Travel Channel's Best Sandwich in America
Crystal Beer Parlor, "incredible burgers" according to chickenplucker
Back in the Day Bakery
B Matthew's Eatery
Sisters of the New South
Huey's on the River, my coworker said this place is touristy, but the food delivers on taste
Clary's Café, of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil fame
Wiley's Championship BBQ
B's Cracklin BBQ
Baker's Pride Bakery
The Grey

I've researched most of these places online, and they have decent reviews.  Let me stress again, this thread was started to measure interest, so please do not yet book your flights and hotel.  You hear that buffetbuster

As much as I love the food on these eating trips, I enjoy the company even more.  We had many familiar faces attend last year and some new faces showed up as well.

So...  Who is interested?

Thanks for your time,
Danny

You know I'd love to, but that will be 2 weeks before we begin our San Diego trip
If you need great coffee- Gallery Espresso-
I discovered it back in 2005, forgot about it until it reminded me it was still there when we walked through Savannah last February when we took a break from our drive between Jacksonville and Charleston.

Just because you don't want to do trip reports doesn't mean you have to blow off all our trips...first KC, now this.

This might be something I would be interested in, if I can get away. It's about my favorite place, with Charleston becoming a runner-up.
I've been to seven of the places on your list, although I've only been to the original Sandfly, and I've only had beginets at Huey's and biscuits and bacon at Clary's. I would strongly suggest a trip to Tybee Island and A.J.'s Dockside. I went three times in three days on my trip last August. I've also heard that Gerald's Pig and Shrimp, also on Tybee Island, has great fried shrimp, although I haven't tried it.

For non-food activities, there's Fort Pulaski National Park, between Savannah and Tybee Island.

bartl,

I wanted to add Mrs. Wilkes to the list, but wanderingjew tells me the place is not worth the wait.

Rule #1: wanderingjew is always right.

Rule #2: If wanderingjew is wrong, refer back to rule #1.

I was very disappointed with Mrs. Wilkes when we visited in 2010 on Charleston Glee Club weekend. Out of all of the restaurants I visited it was my least favorite.  On the other hand my visit to Lady in Sons in 2005 was spectacular- but then again that was 11 years ago.

I will defer to the group regarding Mrs Wilkes. They opened in 1943 and the company i work for started in 1949. We have been providing them fresh chicken for 67 years.

My visit last year to Mrs. Wilkes was fantastic!  Lady & Son's had the best fried chicken. I highly recommend both places.  In fact, I wouldn't think about a visit to Savannah without hitting both places.

I agree, the fried chicken at Lady and Sons was second to none when I visited back in 2005. Everything was replenished on the buffet, and was always fresh, but once again that was back in 2005 and I can't account for how things are now.

I just wanted to bump this and give another mention of B's Cracklin BBQ. They are receiving continued love from the folks in Savannah and recently opened a great place in Atlanta. From the press and social media you would have thought Atlanta had never tasted real BBQ before. I have been to both and can attest that it is the real deal. Whole Hog Q and incredible sides but the star is the ribs.
