Roadfood Review - Santillo's - Eliz. NJ

I noticed that the featured Roadfood place of the day yesterday was Santillo's Pizza in Elizabeth NJ.

I realize everyone's pizza tastes vary widely, but I never got all the hype about this place. It shows up quite often in Ten Best Lists of NJ Pizza, etc. I lived in Elizabeth for about 10 years in the 80's and 90's and was never impressed. I've even gone back a few times since, just to re-check my opinion, but it still doesn't impress me all that much.

Yes, it's good pizza, but not Ten Best. Maybe it's even Roadfood-worthy due to the unique setup (down an alley in the back, one man, no seating operation) but I (we, my wife & kids too) had it once or twice and always opted instead for Spirito's
http://www.yelp.com/biz/spiritos-restaurant-elizabeth    or Michelino's   http://www.michelinos-pizza.com/  for Old School pizza, plus those places actually have seating.

Anyone else have an opinion about Elizabeth Old School Pizza?

PS: I don't have an axe to grind or anything, I like the uniqueness of the place, and the owner is quite dedicated to his work, I just don't think it's all that great.

    Ken-
Did you also think they put too much oregano on the pizza?

I do realize that Ken8038 has no issue with the review itself, but I do want to point out what an outstanding job Mike did on this review.  He went into great detail about what the pizza tasted like, was very honest with his opinion and he also discussed the issues with where to eat you pizza.

No help with comparing pizza places in the area since I've never been there but I do think Mike wrote an excellent review and hope he may write more.

Not really, maybe Al (the owner) had a heavy hand with the oregano the day it was reviewed. It's not one particular thing, my main observation is that the pizza is just a little better than average all around, nothing special about it.

And again, I started my post saying that everyone's taste in pizza is different. Something about this pizza doesn't appeal to me even though it seems to be a favorite of many reviewers.

Another Elizabeth Old School Pizza destination I forgot to mention is Bruno's. I'm not usually big on weird toppings, but their buffalo chicken pizza is amazing. If I crave that (about once a year) I'll still drive the 10 miles back to Elizabeth to pick one up.
