I have added it to the list of possible stops, ChiBears.  I'm going to try to do a run of the route this weekend and try the three places I haven't been to (Great Sea, El Potosi, and this new place).

Mr. Maki and I, Mr. & Mrs. Roadhouse, along with our friend Carolyn, tried Great Seas, El Potosi, and Pizza y Pan Pa' Ya on Saturday.  Since I can't directly upload photos here, here's a link to the album in the FB Contingent page- even if you don't have a FB account, you should be able to see it.

El Potosi was up first- we split a carne asada taco, a chicken taco, an al pastor taco, and a milanesa torta- all of them were really good.  The place is cute- inside the building is the kitchen and a couple tables.  Outside, under an awning, there's a few more tables and a collection of kitsch/junk hanging from the framework of the awning.

Pizza y Pan Pa' Ya was next- of the three stops, this was the highlight.  It was about 80 degrees out on Saturday (a HUGE improvement from when I proposed this outing three months ago!), so the crisp air conditioning was very appreciated.  We got a variety of baked goods, both sweet and savory, and a pizza, as well as a couple empanadas after another customer recommended them to us on their way out.  The pizza was awesome- we went with "Pollo con Champiñones" one of their pre-selected combinations of chicken and mushroom.  Great crispy thin crust, plentiful toppings.

Great Seas- we got an order of crab rangoon for an appetizer.  I tasted very little crab in them.  The dipping sauce was thin.  I wasn't very impressed.  We also got their famous lollipop chicken wings.  We opted to get the mild version.  I thought they were good- fairly meaty for their size and the glaze was more complex than just sweet.  I would go back there and get them if I were in the neighborhood, but overall I didn't think they were worthy of space in our digestive systems for this trip.

After talking about the logistics of the trip, I think this is the lineup:

Bang Bang Pie Shop- 2051 N California Ave (the Logan Square location)
I'm making this our first stop, and I think we should focus on their biscuits, which are as equally regarded as their pie.  I'm not preventing anyone from getting pie, just encouraging something new!

Red Hot Ranch- 2072 N Western Ave
Awesome fried shrimp, smooshed burgers, and Depression dogs!

Pizza y Pan Pa’ Ya- 3125 W Montrose
There was an ice cream place under construction across the street- not sure if they'll be ready in 3 1/2 weeks, but fingers crossed!

El Potosi- 3710 N Elston
THEY ARE CASH ONLY!!!  YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Honey Butter Fried Chicken- 3361 N Elston

These are the people who responded to the Doodle that they were available that day:
Irisarbor
Gyp
CNW
MFL
ScreamingChicken (pending Brewer's games dates)
ChiBears15
Mr. & Mrs. Roadhouse
Quijote
LAmuse Bouche

Who else???

What time do we think?  I think Bang Bang is the only place that closes earlier in the day, at 4pm- that's why I made them first.

I think we are still in, Frank maybe - don't know about any boys (who will be home by then)
I am curious why tacos were added in since this is a fried chicken focus, but I'm not organizing so....

irisarbor, I don't think think the overall theme of the tour was ever meant to be Fried Chicken.  Honey Butter Fried Chicken is just the grand finale to an otherwise varied day mapped out to stay within the HBFC neighborhood.

I can tell you, this is going to be a tough one to get through.  Every place on the list has multiple "must try" items.  Even a bite or two here and there could fill us up well before we get to the big finish.  I think the key will be in the pacing.  Slow and steady will win the race rather than plowing through and trying to get it all in too quickly.

Yes, this is correct.  There's been a lot of interest in HBFC, so we planned a day around it, but there's no specific theme.

If we're trying to attract participants to this outing, we should include the review by Roadfooder King T.  If his photos and descriptions don't make you want to go there, nuthin' will.

I was looking at Google Maps and noticed a couple of other chicken places.  I'm not advocating them for this particular event but am curious: what are Mr. Pollo and Leghorn Chicken like?

Mr. Pollo does a pretty good version of South American Rotisserie Chicken.  They have a nice variety of sides, but my favorite is their consistently good Sweet Plantains.  While I do enjoy Mr. Pollo's food, the name continues to confound me: It should either be "Señor Pollo" or "Mr. Chicken"?  The pointless pixilation of Spanish and English aggravates the living daylights out of me.  But they do cook up some decent bird.

Leghorn, as the name suggests*, is an attempt to bring the chicken sensibilities of the Deep South to the big city up north.  Haven't been yet, but solid reviews over at LTHForum.com.

While everyone else is here, if I'm participating I just may have an inclination be a few blocks around the corner at Parson's.  It appears to possibly be a project of some sort of experimental hipster group, but if the chicken's legit I can overlook that.

"Señor Pollo" is probably pretty close to overused, and "Mr. Chicken" means you're stuck paying royalties to Don Knotts' estate.

Do you keep your flannel shirts numbered for just such an emergency?

Something new is great, but there is going to be pie for this pie-deprived person.

Looks great--it's on the calendar! All of these places look fantastic. I may bring The Other Quijote along-- I may need someone to carry my leftovers for me.

I believe the day will start at Bang Bang Pie Shop, although I'm not sure what time.  Probably not too early so as to accommodate travel time for our friends to the north.  And me.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it, and if I do, if I'll be able to make the whole schedule, but I'm a definite maybe, if it's not too late. What time is Bang Bang scheduled for?

I'll leave the final word to abe, but I think we've agreed on 11am.  The goal is to get to Honey Butter Fried Chicken before their dinner rush starts and that start time should accomplish that nicely.

My sister Professor/Doctor Patty, and her husband David, once proud Cheeseheads, (thanks Governor) now Flatlanders (thanks Northwestern) , would like to join us at the HBFC stop. I told them I'd call them.

Wow, Cheeseheads fleeing to Illinois!  That's a switch.  Welcome to them both.  I'll be sending them a housewarming gift shortly in the form of my second half property tax bill.  Pay it in good health.

Anyway, with just a week to go, it may be time to get an official headcount to make sure we've got a place at the table for everyone who wants to attend.

Roadhouses for two, please.

I’m hoping to do the first three stops. I’ll probably get to Bang Bang early, have a biscuit and then pie when the group arrives.
