Do you prefer more cakes OR less cakes & ice cream drinks?

Gotta have grasshoppers and an added benefit is that those who don't care for ice cream drinks can enjoy a little creme de menthe on the rocks instead.

I did wind up clubbing it for dinner tonight and I paid close attention to the potatoes as they were ordered.  With the exception of 2 requests for garlic mashed, everyone (myself included) had au gratin.

Is that a smear of ketchup I see next to your Ponderosa takeout steak?

If you'd prefer pickled herring over Haluski, I'd be happy to bring it.  Cream sauce or white wine?

I vote wine.

I'd need about 6 bottles of wine if I were to eat pickled herring a second time. Jus' sayin'.

How kind of you to volunteer!  You bring a jar in white wine sauce, I'll bring one in cream sauce.

You don't know what you're missing.  Admittedly, pickled herring can have a very, um, assertive flavor.  It needs to be eaten in small bites.  Even for someone who enjoys it, if you put too much in your mouth it can be overwhelming.  Eating it on a cracker with a two to one cracker to herring ratio balances out the flavor nicely.

You're thinking of Russian Beluga Caviar on a cracker, which would be "Putin on the Ritz".

This thread deserves a bump since the event is happening in just five days.  Just so everyone knows what to bring and in what quantity, might I respectfully suggest it's time for a roll call and inventory of dishes.

You can count us in for two.  We have a potential lineup of any or all of the following: Haluski, Loaded Baked Potato Casserole, Creamed Herring, Stuffed Peppadew Peppers, Vegetarian "Liver" Paté (made with Mushrooms and heavy garlic!).

After we see what others are bringing, we'll pick and choose from that list so as not to duplicate dishes.

I'm pretty certain abe_froeman and Mr. Maki will attend.  I'm almost positive they'll contribute a three bean salad.  I know this because abe is out of town until Saturday and she asked Mrs. Roadhouse to prepare it.

Whadda the rest of youse got?

Out of consideration to our guests, we are doing quality control of the Korbel tonight. Brandy (what's left of it) passes our test.

Re: September 3, 2017 - Our house becomes a Supper Club for one day 2017/09/03 23:31:51 (permalink)
It was another blow out chow down with excellent contributions from all who attended.  The "Relish Tray" included Grilled Shrimp Cocktail with two different homemade cocktail sauces, spreadable cheeses, three kinds of homemade pickles, cucumber topping on wheat crackers, herring in wine and cream sauce, two styles of Deviled Eggs, Chinese grapes (yep, that's a thing), stuffed Peppadew shooters, raw veggies, and a couple things I know I'm forgetting.

After we stuffed ourselves silly on appetizers, it was time for the Main Course.  JRPfeff cooked up a moist and delicious Al Capone Roast made with pork instead of beef.  He also threw a couple of Bacon wrapped Beef Tenderloins on the grill, along with bunches of Asparagus.  Son Martin grilled up a mess o' Chicken parts and pulled off an actual Friday Fish Fry, on a Sunday no less.  That's talent!

Sides included a Hash Brown Casserole, a Twice Baked Potato Casserole, Brussels Sprouts Gratin, and Pie Diva's Knotted Rolls, fresh and hot from the oven.

Dessert was an inspired affair as Pie Diva reinterpreted classic Supper Club Ice Cream Drinks into Cake form.  Grasshoppers, Pink Squirrels and Brandy Alexanders were all represented in glorious technicolor Butter Cream Frosting.  The actual liqueurs were available to drizzle over the top for extra flavor and/or booze.  She even made a Bee Sting Cake for good measure.  But the two stars of the dessert table were the Chocolate Caramel Cake she's made in the past and a brilliant Lavender Blueberry Cake that turned out to be gluten free!

Hardcore guests managed to stick around for a short while after dinner sipping Bourbon and whatever else was handy.  We'd probably still be there enjoying a few laughs, but the mosquitoes turned mean and nasty as the sun set, making it impossible to relax and enjoy ourselves.

All in all it was a glorious day with beautiful weather, delicious food, and great company.  Here's hoping the JRPfeff family needs to clean out their freezer again next year around this same time.

Thank you Buddy for that fine report. We really enjoyed hosting our friends again.

After the first round of cleaning, we sat by the fire pit for a time. The combination of the smoke and a light breeze kept the mosquitoes away. You might still be here if you stepped out near the fire.

A few more thoughts:
  • The Relish Tray Table was a brilliant idea and even better in reality. I take full credit.
  • The Old Fashioned Clinic was another success. By the end of the party we had several new bartenders, creating Old Fashioneds to their own personal tastes.
  • Since Al Capone Roast is already taken, we'll call that a Joe Rogo Roast in the future.
  • Bobbi prepared Buttered Button Mushrooms to serve with the beef. They were every bit as good as these. By the time she ate, there was just one left.
  • The bourbons brought by ChiBears15 and Quixote were outstanding. The differences in flavors were subtle and fun to compare side-by-side. Thank you Danny and John for the gifts.
All for now. A Labor Day 2018 party is definitely in our plans. We just need to ensure that it occurs during a Brewers homestand.

p.s. Danny was my official photographer yesterday. I eagerly await him posting his photos.
