September 3, 2017 - Our house becomes a Supper Club for one day

Pencil in Sunday September 3 for the next event at our house. No barbecue. No (or very few) pies. We need to empty the deep freeze.

Pie Diva and I began brain storming this party as I was purchasing 1.75L of Korbel and 2 liter bottles of Mist Twist and Squirt. Starting with build-your-own Brandy Old Fashioned's (we have 7 different varieties of bitters and Bobbi's homemade Maraschino cherries) we will move on to other Supper Club fare. We are serving our fish fry & sides, and also some roasted beef (tenderloin and/or prime rib - TBD) and cheesy potatoes.

To get the party started, the ultimate relish tray will be a group activity. We are providing pickled beets. First come, first dibs on filling out the rest of the tray. Carrots, green onions, radishes, olives, that's the easy stuff. Owl's Nest or Merck's - you decide, you provide.

Owl's Nest or Merck's - you decide, you provide.

So cheese spread or high-grade pharmaceuticals?

Merkts might be a better choice.  And although you state "no barbecue", prime rib rotisseried over charcoal is wonderful.

We have tickets to see the Brewers and Nationals at Miller Park (hopefully albeit not likely an NLCS preview) that day so we're out.

If I am the waitress, does that mean I have to eat in the kitchen away from the other guests?

A lovely idea! Count us in. If no one objects, we can bring a couple of cheese spreads: Merkt's for the purists and some pimento cheese that I've been wanting to make at home.

You're on the calendar.  Food contribution TBD.  Maybe I'll pick up some needy wayfarers along the way and bring them as my guests.

Four weekends out and time to get serious about this.

  • Beef
  • Fish
  • Chicken
  • Pickles
  • Au Gratin Potatoes
  • Brandy Old Fashioneds
  • Desserts
What you are bringing:

Not strictly Supper Club fare, but we're considering Haluski, made with the same fired cabbage recipe served at the Smoke/Pie Day shindig.  Also Marinated Beets with some serious garlic notes.  Good as a side dish or appetizer tray.

While we won't be attending, hashbrowns would look good on the menu.  Let me know if you want to borrow my Weber rotisserie for the prime rib.

Not strictly?  More like "not at any supper club I've ever visited", pal.  While we won't be attending, your attempt to hijack supper club tradition is highly offensive and should be met with strong resistance.  Violent if necessary.  Excessive force in the apprehension of the Roadhouse Haluski...has been approved.

Perhaps you should consider hosting a "The F*rt-Fueling Eastern European Foods of Cleveland" night at your house instead.

If I wasn't laughing so hard I'd be deeply offended by your attack on the ambrosia of the Polish culinary gods.

Are you telling me no Supper Club, in the history of Supper Clubs, has ever served Buttered Noodles as a side dish to you pasty faced Cheddar Chompers?  Halkuski is nothing more than a more interesting ethnic twist on that classic White People's food.  Further, the fried cabbage base for this dish has already been established as an acceptable foodstuff, having been successfully served, as noted earlier, at this year's Smoke/Pie Day extravaganza.

I'll thank you not to demean my Haluski sir, as further denigration may bring swift and brutal retribution from my compatriot in Pittsburgh, who at this very moment may be busy busting a buffet somewhere in the Roadfood universe.

Besides, what would you have me bring; a jar of applesauce?

Buddy

This sure does sound like a great time, but Mariton and I will have Georgia on our minds that weekend.

I gotta agree Buddy, Haluska at a Supper Club? I suppose you'll want bourbon in your Old Fashioned, too.

Brad - I considered hashbrowns, but they'd be a pain to make in large quantities. Are baked potatoes a Supper Club necessity?

I'm sure that'd be a much-welcomed change from the sauce you usually bring.

However, I did notice that no one's yet volunteered to bring the pickled herring for the relish tray.  While it may not be served at all supper clubs I've certainly seen it on the table before.

I have a genuine Weber wok that might work for them.  I'll have to give it a try sometime.

I think you'd have to count baked potatoes as a necessity.  I always get either au gratin or hashbrowns but lots of other people like them.

Don't forget the broccoli & cauliflower medley for the vegetable.  Tradition would be to serve it simply steamed but it seems like more and more restaurants are finishing it in the saute pan.

Mrs. C has to put in her time at Kohl's tonight so I'm on my own for dinner, and now I'm thinking I might have to go find myself a supper club somewhere!

If you'd prefer pickled herring over Haluski, I'd be happy to bring it.  Cream sauce or white wine?

Would a Loaded Baked Potato Casserole be an acceptable substitute for individual baked potatoes?

Cream sauce seems to be the more popular version although on the rare occasion I eat pickled herring I prefer the wine.  Bring both and become legendary!
