South Georgia Pool Hall Tour !!!

Its well established that pool halls and hot dogs seem to have been made for each other. I had to visit a customer last week in South Georgia. A trip that would leave more spare time than actual work time. Perfect for me!!!!! I skipped lunch and headed out. First stop, D.R.s Chili Dogs at Rochelle Pool Hall in Rochelle,GA. I was the only customer on this hot afternoon but the bartender was icing down beer for the upcoming after work rush. The first dog of the day was probably the best for me and I will be making this a regular stop. The dog was a blend of pork and beef and the chili was nicely spiced.

Next stop was Cordele Recreation Parlor or Cordele Pool Room. Both names are used locally. I have written about this stop before and hope to write a review soon. They have been open since 1939 and very little has changed here. Great service, great dogs, and friendly locals. I had a scrambled dog without the cheese sauce since I wanted to experience the chili a little better. I think I prefer it this way. The dog is a pork and beef blend covered with mustard, oyster crackers, spicy chili, and onions. VERY good combo. I also had a dog with mustard and onions. They also serve Irish stew and the owner suggested next time I get a half and half scrambled dog. Half chili covered and half Irish stew. Next time for sure.

Serious 9 ball match..

The next stop is a good place to get an education. The Billiard Academy has been in Thomasville,GA since 1949. The walk up window opens at 8:00 AM and dogs are served until the bar closes LATE. Chili dogs are the mainstay and are very much like the rest in the area. Boiled or steamed, skinless and served with mustard, chili, and onions. Suits me just fine.

All of that works well for me! I think I'll have my lead cook make me a Chili dog or two right now!

So you had to "visit a customer" and apparently spent all your time in pool halls.

Are you in the "private lending" business?

Not a pool hall but if ever in Brunswick check out Willies Weenee Wagon. Great chili dogs, & pork chop sandwiches

I grew up in Cordele and absolutely love those scrambled dogs and I always get mine all the way half and half, little salt and pepper and a little hot sauce and it get's serious. I've been in the restaurant business for over 25 years and have recently reopened my dream spot in Fort Valley, GA. It's called The Railroad Cafe. It is in a 1901 train depot in downtown and I would like to invite you to my place next time you take your tour on the road and I'll feed you my rendition of this age old classic.
Safe Journey's,
Jeffrey Hall

Oh, that is a shame.  I'm aware of a group of Atlanta food bloggers going to tour Pearson Farms on Sat Oct. 24.  I'd suggested that they stop by your place while in Fort Valley, but your hours are going to make that impossible.

Please allow me to bump this trip report. I revisited one of my favorite SW Georgia haunts this week and had my usual. The Scramble Dog at Cordele Pool Room is Roadfood perfection for me.

I also visited Monroe's Hot Dogs and Billiards in Americus,GA or simply Monroe's as the locals call it.

A chili cheese dog and a slaw dog w/cheese. Probably go without the cheese next time.

Just up the street from Monroe's is the Windsor Hotel built in 1892. Occupying almost the entire block it still operates as a hotel.

What kind of cheese product is that on the scramble and dogs?  Do most places use it in this part of Georgia or is it a Monroe's thing?

The cheese on the scramble dog had a really good taste but the product at Monroe's seemed to be a foodservice canned item. I will ask before getting it again.

Easily my favorite version. The chili here would be good by itself but makes the scramble dog a great dish...

A little of both. The dog certainly wasn't overcooked. LOL
