I lived in and loved Sparta (Lake Mohawk) from 1973 to 1979. 40+ years ago!!
In the little downtown Alpine village near the boardwalk was a small quaint restaurant with a liquor store attached.
Don't remember the name & don't know if it's still there but if it is that would be a neat place for a date.
    EDIT AFTER SOME RESEARCH!
I believe it was the St. Moritz. Looks like it's been remodeled but that's the place I remember.

Krogh's Restaurant & Brew Pub Nice place food is good. Burgers are very good here the beer is hit or miss. Just down the street from St Moritz. There is also an Italian place right on the boardwalk  called Ristorante iL Porto. good luck to your friend.

My grandparents lived in Sparta (East Shore Trail) from the early 1960's until they passed away. It always seemed like a storybook village to me when I was a kid. My favorite was a place called the Gibson Girl, which had what I recall was a good burger and great milkshake. Sorry this doesn't help you in searching for a place today, but Foodbme's comments stirred up some nice memories.

And to think, I never heard of Sparta till a kid named Chris Jent came out of there to play basketball at Ohio State and then the NBA.

It was, and maybe still is, a story book village. My kids grew up there and our son played on Sparta High School's 1st state championship football team. We lived on Alpine Trail on top of the hill on the west side. Our house was the highest point in Lake Mohawk. We probably couldn't afford to live there today!

My great Aunt lived over on that side of the lake, I think in that same neighborhood. She was one that lured her brother, my grandfather, out to Sparta. I do think the prices have gone up, and last time there I saw that many of the cottages along the lake shore had been replaced by houses that seemed to fill the entire property.

Again, sorry for not being helpful in your search Gregg!
