We have a seat reserved for Ann. She had better be ready when we roll by.

Time to update the headcount.  I believe there are rumors of potential sightings of chicagostyledog and ChiTownDiner for a limited number of stops along the way.

Good idea, but the only place we'll need a solid count is Fire Pitt.  Who's joining us for dinner?

There is a slight chance I may have to depart early and miss the Fire Pitt, but please put me down as a yes for now.

Does anyone want anything from Bobby Nelson's Cheese Shop?

Out on Fire Pit, strong possibility for early stops...now that 8:30am is considered early!

Sam swallowed a popsicle stick Thursday evening. He seems perfectly fine. However, we're waiting for it to pass or we're off for x-rays to the Veterinary Specialty Clinic in Buffalo Grove on Sunday.

The O&H on Douglas is the original, closed on Sunday. All O&H kringles are the same.

Were reservations made for Fire Pitt yet? I'm waiting on an answer from our friends Chris & Carolyn (the ones who joined us at The Hideaway last fall).

Depending on whether they come, we may do the Kringle thing, skip the Brat Stop, meet up around Bobby Nelson's....just depends how many people we have to coordinate with and how early we all want to get out of bed.

No reservations yet, although I'd like to be able to call them around 8:45 tonight (they close at 9).

We're set with a 4:30 reservation for 12 for the "King's Room".  Right now the count stands at 10 but Fire Pitt is open at 9am tomorrow so adjusting up or down won't be a problem; hopefully we'll have all 14.

Nina , Sam & I will join you at 11am at Big Star. Sam seems okay, still no sighting of the popsicle stick. Vet said it may take 72 hours.

Sorry for the late reply- no Chris & Carolyn tomorrow.

I'm gonna look at the map and figure out where/when we'll join up with everyone.

CTD, which bakery/ies are you stopping at tomorrow?

The Sturtevant O&H is *right* near the highway- are you going to the Larsen's or Lehmann's, which are farther east? Are they worth the extra distance?  I know we stopped at most, if not all, of them when we did the Racine tour a few years ago, but I don't remember the differences between them.

Re: Spend July 3 with The Contingent 2016/07/02 23:52:41 (permalink)
Our plan right now, assuming there's no really compelling reason to go to Larson's or Lehmann's, is to get to O&H in Sturtevant by 9:30 or so, spend 15 mins or so, get down to Bobby Nelson's by 10, then on to Big Star by 10:45...we might sneak over to the Mars Cheese Castle, simply because I don't think I've ever been there.

See y'all tomorrow!

While the Cheese Head natives might disagree, we didn't find any major differences between the various Kringle bakeries.  They were all good, and each had its strong points.  The biggest difference seemed to be price, with the least expensive outlet offering the best (but not by a lot) version.  Couldn't tell you which one that was, but I can say for sure it wasn't O&H.

Re: Spend July 3 with The Contingent 2016/07/04 10:12:51 (permalink)
Hopefully a good time was had by all.  A brat-based English muffin breakfast sandwich, a couple of drive-in burgers, some root beer, a chicken wing (thanks, Irisarbor), some visits to cheese/sausage/bakery/deli-type retailers, and a fish boil dinner to wrap things up made for a good day (for me, anyway).  The list:

Brat Stop
Tim & Tom's Cheese Shop
Bobby Nelson's Cheese Shop (old school, the way the cheese places all used to be)
Mars Cheese Castle (really more of a supermarket now)
Big Star
Paielli's Bakery
Tenuta's Deli & Liquor
The Spot
Jelly Belly factory (thanks for coming up with this stop, JRPfeff).
Fire Pitt

I left home at 7am and didn't get back until 8:20pm, so it was a long day but a lot of fun and the best part was getting together with friends.  Plus Buddy shared with us that the new owners of Burt's Place have decided to replace it with a Dominos, and he can't wait to start working there!

Thanks, but ChiBears15 deserves some of the credit as it was he that suggested the pre-tour stops for breakfast and shopping.

Had I known about your love of velodromes I would've made an effort to work Washington Park into the itinerary!

Having worked tireless nights this past week to put together the pre-tour portion of our trip, I thought someone would be kind enough to give me a bite of their kringle.  However, I left Kenosha yesterday without any kringles.

Pie Diva expects Danny to bring pie next time. It's okay (& much easier) to use two store bought graham cracker crusts.
