Spend July 3 with The Contingent

This is the offshoot of a conversation that was started in the Supper Club/Steakhouse/Fish Fry thread:

BuddyRoadhouse
Confirmed attendees (those who have specifically indicated they'd be there) include abe_froeman, Mr. Maki, ChiBears15, irisarbor & Mr., BuddyRoadhouse & Mrs., and our fearless leader Mr. Awesome.  Please let us know if you're planning to join the fun, and if you have any suggestions for stops.

The fearless leader and I have communicated and are figuring on a not too heavy day, maybe 3-4 stops.  Most of the journey is planned to center around the state line, and, for the time being, includes a fishboil at some point (other menu items are available for the fish haters).  Further thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Right now the general region being considered runs east from Kenosha (Buddy has proposed a couple of stops there) to Trevor or possibly as far west as Genoa City for a day-ending fish boil, but nothing's set in stone yet so other options are certainly on the table.  One advantage of Trevor is that it's just over the line from Antioch, the home of Hopper's Garage.

Speak up if you're interested!

This is a ScreamingChicken production, I'm merely a supporting player.  I did suggest return trips to Big Star Drive In, in Kenosha, and possibly Kewpee Lunch in Racine (click on the link and see what happens to your cursor.  BTW, it changes ever time you click on a new topic on the site).  Beyond that, I'm just along for the ride.

If anyone has any ideas for this tour, please direct them at the ChickenDude (aka "Mr. Awesome"...in his own mind).

Current guest list:
abe_froeman & Mr. Maki = 2
irisarbor & Mr. = 2
ChiBears15 = 1
JRPfeff & Pie Diva = 2 (any offspring Pfeffs or Divas joining us)
BuddyRoadhouse & Mrs. = 2
Mr. Aw...no, I just can't type it twice in one post...ScreechingCaponHiddenBirdBoy = 1

Total = 10

I would love to be in-but again would need to ride along with someone. I am happily off that weekend.

If we want to finish with a fish boil both Fire Pitt (Trevor) and Fitzgerald's (Genoa City) are operating as usual on the 3rd; Fire Pitt suggests reservations for larger parties and Fitzgerald's would like a heads-up.

Kewpee Lunch is closed on Sundays so it's out.  Along with Big Star Kenosha also offers Andy's and Shirl's, if those would be of interest to anyone, and I'll poke around a bit to see what else might be out there.

Also, the Kenosha History Center is open from noon until 4 on Sundays but I haven't yet checked to see if the holiday weekend is impacting those hours.

Any of those sound good.  Possibly a stop at Tenuta's for some Italian specialties to take home?  Be sure to bring a cooler!

Hoping we're not starting too early, it is a holiday weekend after all.

Tenuta's (52nd St.) and the History Center (51st Pl.) are the 2 northernmost suggestions so far so I'm thinking they should be adjacent on the itinerary.

Here's my first draft:

The Spot (75th St.) opens at 11.  Meet there, eat, done by 11:45.  Head to the History Center, visit until 2:00-2:30.  Go west down 52nd St. to Tenuta's, stock up, grab a snack, etc.  This would also be the time for going off-schedule a little bit if some people want to do that; for example, Buddy may want to investigate budget Kenosha motels for future reference.  Meet at Fire Pitt (Trevor) or Fitzgerald's (Genoa City) for a 4:30 dinner reservation.  Since the majority will be coming from the Chicago area Fire Pitt would probably be a better choice as Fitzgerald's is roughly 15 miles further west.

2 meals, grocery shopping, and some brain exercise.  Seem reasonable?

Brad, your first draft sounds great!  I was also thinking I would do breakfast at Frank's Diner in Kenosha around 9:00 am.  Feel free to join me if you would like.

Sounds good.  Might even find time for another snack during that "off-schedule" slot.  Anything good between Kenosha and Fire Pitt?

I'll go ahead and add Frank's Diner to the schedule.  Good idea!

Nothing I'm personally familiar with so all I can do is go by what I can find online.  Valeo's Pizza has been around since 1965 and Ralph's Ace of Hearts (bar) is just up the road from Fire Pitt; those are 2 I found with a quick scan of Google Maps.

EDIT:  I zoomed in a couple of clicks and found Chicken Palace just west of Tenuta's.  It looks to be a small chain with a few locations from Appleton to Kenosha.

Fugettabout Frank's Diner! It was sold many years ago and it's not the same. A former employee and her partner opened the Coffee Pot and they took the original grill man along. Way, way better than Frank's. I was regular at Frank's from 1980 until the opening of the Coffee Pot. Their problem is timing. Sunday morning at 9:00am ain't gonna work. Way too crowded, especially on the 4th weekend. Better at 8:00am or even earlier, or you'll just wait and won't be seated together unless you eat outside. Nina and I are in for the Coffee Pot, The Spot, and Big Star. Andy's and Shirl's and Valeo's are MEH! Big Star and The Spot-hand's down the best cheeseburgers in Kenosha! If you desire pizza, the best is in Racine at Mike and Angelo's. Nothing compares in Kenosha. Open at 4:00 on Sunday, we can all be seated a large table. Tenuta's is a must stop.

Any interest in a Duncan Hines recommendation for a stop? Oage Thomsen's Restaurant is still standing in Kenosha (with a slightly different menu).

Thanks, CSD!  I was hoping someone familiar with the area and/or suggested stops would speak up.  JRPfeff, where's Thomsen's located?

Big Star would make an interesting starting point as it would create a north-south direction with little to no backtracking:

11:00-11:45  Big Star
12:00-13:00  Kenosha History Center
13:15-13:45  Tenuta's
14:00-14:45  The Spot
* free/schedule catch-up time *
16:30-??:??  Fire Pitt

Paielli's Bakery is also in the vicinity but closes at 2pm on Sundays, in case anyone wants to check it out.

ChiBears15, what about following CSD's recommendation and starting at Coffee Pot a little earlier?

Thanks for the input!

After the Coffee Pot, I think we should stop at Common Grounds Coffee for a cup.  If it is nice out, we can walk to the lighthouse and enjoy the cool view of Lake Michigan.

Jim,

I was thinking about stopping in Racine for kringles before breakfast.  It all depends on when we meet at the Coffee Pot and when the bakeries open.  I will gladly pick some stuff up for you if I have time.

Danny,

Gregg & Cliff have trained you well.

We'll probably make our own kringle stops depending on who is open that day.

Sunday. Sunday. Sunday.

Ooh, is U.S. 30 Dragstrip part of the tour now?

Mars is for the tourists.  Bobby Nelson's Cheese Shop is where the locals go.  Gimme a pound of Hickory Smoked Sausage "Mitt".

Danny, seeing as how you are industrious enough to break through The Cheddar Curtain earlier than some of us Flatlanders, we may get you a Kringle shopping list.

There's a parade in Kenosha on July 3rd starting at 1:00. We will want to be clear of the area near the Coffee Pot, History Center & lighthouse by then. They take their parades seriously in Kenosha.
