Spring is here. I smell smoke.

My son and I had been wanting to try some new spots for a while and have been wanting to try Southern Soul Barbeque in St. Simons Island, GA for a long time and their recent naming as the #1 BBQ in the south by Southern Living Magazine just fueled the fire.
http://www.southernliving.com/souths-best/bbq#southern-soul-barbecue-st-simons-island-georgia
We all agree that lists like this are subjective as hell and change with the wind. I don't argue with the lists instead use them as a guide. It has been a long favorite of Heartbreaksoup here on the forums so I reached out for pro tips from Grant. His main advice, get there early and order anything and everything. That's easy enough.

Seating is limited inside and there are picnic tables out front that fill quickly. We arrived 10 minutes after opening and grabbed seats at the bar. The picture below is 20 minutes after opening. Backed out the door.

Great selection of sauces.

My favorite is the Hot Georgia Soul.
3 meat combo of half a smoked chicken, pulled pork, smoked turkey, fried okra, and Brunswick Stew. Oh my..

3 meat combo of sausage,brisket,spare ribs,stew,and mac&cheese. Oh my X2.....

They also carry Topo Chico mineral water from Mexico. My 1st taste of it and I have already ordered more online. I am addicted.

Why,why, why did I wait so long to visit Southern Soul?

While in Brunswick we couldn't pass up another stop at an old favorite.

This is a meat market/bbq joint with a heavy emphasis on bbq. The meat and sides are displayed in glass front cases and is portioned and weighed as you order. The meats are the stars here. I snagged brisket, ribs, and sausage. We brought them home for a late dinner as we were still full .

Everything tasted great but I am not a huge fan of the way they slice brisket. I like it thin and they slice it about an inch thick.

Our last stop is a real sleeper. Recently Robert Moss who is the contributing BBQ editor for Southern Living was asked to list his top 10 BBQ picks for Georgia. I was very familiar with all but 1 and I am glad he included it. Polly's BBQ is inside a convenience store just yards off I-95 at Townsend,GA.

The dining room is compact and shares space with dog food displays.

    Limited choices. No problem.

Gas station porn. This is an incredible meal for $8.99 with drink included.

Pay attention closely. This is real deal BBQ served in a gas station in the middle of nowhere Georgia on I-95.

    You're welcome.

I loved my one visit (so far) to Southern Soul in January, 2015. I had thought about making the three hour round trip a couple of weeks ago when I was in Savannah, but decided I wasn't ready to leave Savannah. Your report makes me (almost) regret the decision.

Everything tasted great but I am not a huge fan of the way they slice brisket. I like it thin and they slice it about an inch thick.

If you can get a decent approximation of the thickness per pound will they cut you a single piece that you can slice at home?

Nice report!  Well, except for the inclusion of okra.

SC they will but I forgot to ask. PS fried okra is a food group in Georgia.

Chickenplucker.... if you go to the Mexican Isle of a bigger grocery store you can frequently find that Topo Chico mineral water.  They often have a small shelf space for it along with the Mexican fruit sodas and cane sugar Coke.  I even have it up here in flyover country.
