I haven't even made it to the Florida line yet but the good food has already started. I have been trying to eat the acclaimed food from B's Cracklin BBQ in Savannah for a year or so. Read the attached story and you will see what stopped me. Its a good read about the brotherhood of BBQ Pitmasters.

The food was well worth the wait.

Could be an interesting comparison to Gators tonight.  If anyone is still out there, see you there!

Luvin Oven Hot Shots Cafe is nice additional stop for anyone interested...for the food!  The raspberry bars were sublime...A-  Coffee only fair...C.

Hyppo Popsicles was really tasty...very similar to Mexican Pops in Pallenterias.  So many unique flavors and ingredients.

O'Steens is clearly the winner to date in the Fried Shrimp category...A

Barnacle Bills ain't to bad either...B

Cousteau's Waffle & Milkshake Bar has wild combinations and while the shakes were pretty good...B-, the smell of the waffles parading by was intoxicating!

This was my first meet-up with RFers. A really nice bunch of people. Good food. A lot of laughs. Thank you all for the good time.

The highlight for me was Gator's BBQ in Jacksonville. I had the best beef brisket ever. Better than anything that I have ever had, even while judging competition BBQ. The turkey breast was fabulous. Great smoked Cajun sausage. Enjoyed the sides. Go out of your way for this place.

Yea, what he said!   We stopped at Charleston on the way back and who did we bump into there?  Wanderingjew and Sandra.  I hope he adds pix and a review of their stop there too.

Thanks Cliff!  I'm having a lot more fun with photography now and it was a gorgeous setting with a fabulous sunset.

Yes, Gators was special.  Jeff had the Brisket and I had the Turkey.  Both were great.  We both had the Cajun sausage and that was good as well.  For us, it was a surprise highlight.  And, you were sorely missed. We also got a nice intro by the owners, good place and thanks to Stephen for the recommendation.

I had a great time, and enjoyed the excellent food and fellowship. The organizers couldn't have picked a better weekend weather-wise (low temps here are expected to be back in the 30s this weekend). I look forward to the trip reports, and WILL be trying Gator's BBQ in the near future, based on everyone's praise. And I hope to join you again sometime in the future for another Roadfood adventure!

I can post a picture or two once the "official" trip report starts.  But just my 2 cents  for the moment.
Great group of people.  Don't think I've ever hung around a restaurant an hour after the check has been paid.  But everyone was having a good time chatting away that time slipped away from us all.
Gator's didn't disappoint.  I was concerned that they would have problems handling a large group, but the owners were fabulous and their Q held up to the high standards of this "finicky" group!   Barbara Jeans was amazing in both breakfast and surroundings.  Lulu's disappointed in not having any of the prior day's soup left (mushroom, scallop marsella) plus I was still too full from breakfast, but BB's oysters and Karilyn's fish taco were delicious.  Think I was OD'd on food but Beach Road Chicken didn't quite live up to my memory of the place.  Chicken was too greasy as if th efryer wasn't hot enough, and those cream peas were good enough for me to be "Famous".  Best thing at SWC was the caramel chocolate cheesecake.  The seafood was good but ChiTownDiner's grouper filet at Cap's  looked a whole lot better.
All in all it was a good weekend and I certainly enjoyed meeting everyone.  Those going, have a great time in Pittsburgh, sounds like a winner!

I really enjoyed meeting everyone last weekend. It was an experience I wont forget. Gator's was a treat as everyone has said. They don't usually offer table service but went far out of the way to make our visit special. Good call here.
My Brunswick Stew was full of smoked meat and was very much enjoyed.

The spare ribs were the hit of the meal for me. Hidden underneath is pulled pork which was really good also.

Banana Pudding is all I could get this guy to say....

Eating in a setting like that has to make the food taste even better.  And even though I know there's got to be a little photoshop work involved, that is a spectacular tableau.

kozel,
I'm slightly familiar with the process.  An old friend of mine, who was a semipro shooter, introduced me to that technique years ago.  She clued me into the work of a guy who shot the decrepit interiors at Detroit's Union Station (at least I think that's what it was.  It's the huge abandoned building across the street from SLOWS BBQ).  He took this moldering old wreck of a building and, using that same method, made it look like something out of a 16th century Old Testament biblical painting.  It was really quite remarkable.

I shared it with a few friends, then lost the link and haven't been able to find it again.

In any case, you created a lovely image.  Thanks for sharing.

Just when some thought (or were hoping) that this thread would go away.... it's back!!!

We just got back late last night....Our trip continued past St. Augustine as we visited Charleston, we even managed to stroll through the center of Savannah from Forsythe Park to East Bay Street right through the various squares on Bull Street on our way down to Charleston. The last couple of days we spent with family and friends in Charlotte.
Like everyone else, we agreed that Gators was the true sleeper of the trip, an absolute gem. Thanks to Crew84Row for finding it and scouting it out. My biggest disappointment was that I didn't realize that O'Steen's is closed on Sundays, I never guessed that they would be closed on what could potentially be the busiest day for them. I guess it's just not in the stars to check it out anytime soon. We did go to Singleton's instead. The portions were plentiful and the food was very good (with the exeption of the anemic minorcan chowder) which paled in comparision to the chowder I enjoyed the night before at Saltwater Cowboys. Unfortunately the service at Singleton's was extremely slow...
I won't be doing a trip report but I understand that ChiBears15 and ChiTownDiner will team up to do one.

Great story!  When I got to the “We’re on our way with an 84” quote my first thought was, "I wonder if he was referring to a Lang."  Mrs. Chicken would not be pleased if one of those showed up in the driveway...

The teaser shots so far portend a very good group effort trip report...
