The Jaybird has free breakfast....Dale's decision should be done!

I was hoping they'd have a Denny's or an IHOP

Check a Flying J truck stop. They have Denny's now, unfortunately. I went to an IHOP once back in the '70s (you know, when you were just a little tyke). I don't recommend it. Still, you do seem to have a thing for Big Boy so I guess you might like Denny's and IHOP.

In the early 70's I was a little tyke (but still the tallest kid in my class) in the late 70's, I was turning into a brooding teen.

In the mid and late '70s I was grounding a couple of teens who were too self centered to brood.

My hotel, the Days INN, has a Denny's on the property!  I may skip the barbecue stop Friday night and just enjoy a fine grand slam here.

They have a very liberal dine and dash program also, be sure to take advantage! I can lend you my disguise!

Hope to resolve the hotel dilemma tonight. More than likely I'll stick with Ho Jo's unless Sandra wants to be near the beach.

I just confirmed Castillo Real which is a member of the Choice Hotel network.  It is 5 miles to Historic Area with a free hourly trolley stop at hotel and 200 steps from beach.

Well, our trip begins exactly 2 months from today with a flight to Charlotte NC.  We will stay in Charlotte overnight and begin our drive the next morning to St Augustine hopefully with a stop at Sweatman's BBQ in Holly Hill SC.

After the new year I want to get a role call, hopefully a final role call by February 1 and then I'll contact t  our restaurant stops once we have the finalized list to let them know  we are coming...

Hi guys. I'll be watching this v. closely 'cause Terry and I are down that way
the first weekend in March (Searle's Raid Reenactment).

Dale - you might want to reconsider the HoJo's. Bug issues from what I've heard from the other re-enactors.
Might have cleaned up since 2 years ago....

Jaybird's breakfasts are v. good. We ate there at least twice during our previous stay in 2014.

Good to hear from you. Thanks for the heads up. The reviews for Howard Johnson are very mixed. I checked and there have been no recent negative reviews regarding a bug issue. I stayed there in 2002 and again in 2005 and my experience was fine albeit it has been 10 years. After our surprisingly pleasant experiences at two hotels we stayed at in Vermont last month, I've been very suspicious about negative reviews when there are just as many favorable reviews. Be that as it may, I'm still looking for a better deal

Ok

Scratch all of that, I just locked us in for the Jaybird Inn for $100

I just locked us in for the Indigo Inn in Charleston SC after we leave St Augustine for the non refundable price of $111 a night. Looks like I'll have to do some research on inexpensive overnight parking in Charleston

Despite the fact that I am unlikely to join you all, I did some advance recon on your collective behalf. Normally, I fly in and out of Orlando, but I had occasion this evening to fly into Jacksonville. I drove straight over to Singleton's Seafood Shack in Mayport, and I was not disappointed.

Yes, Singleton's is out of the way - you have to be going there to go there. In my most humble opinion, I would put the fried shrimp at Singleton's up against just about any others found on the First Coast.

While waiting for my meal, I read through some of the reviews for Singleton's found on Google and Facebook. They end up being very mixed and I don't get it....as I have never had a bad meal here. They get ripped by some who call them "expensive" (or maybe, to the point, not worth what you pay). I think the people writing these kinds of reviews are folks who are used to the Red Lobster endless shrimp specials or some other chains' "deals" on frozen seafood. I have always been satisfied with the pricing here for FRESH, local north Florida seafood.

Tomorrow, O'Steen's is the plan for lunch before a pick-up run to MCO and dinner at Dixie Crossroads. By the time New Year's Eve comes around, I will be looking for a very well-prepared slab of red meat!

TTM,

If everything works out, I'm planning on making Singleton's my first meal after arriving in Jacksonville.  I too was worried about the mixed reviews the place receives online, but after your recon visit there I know it is a legit spot.  Thanks for the review.

You still have a standing invitation from CTD to stay at his hotel room. It's a small room with a twin bed which of course you'd have to share...I'm sure you'd be comfy....

Osteen's has been dodging me for way too long. As much as Singleton's looks good, we'll only have time for one or the other and Osteens will likely be the winner unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Well....the only way it could happen is if we pull an Ayersian and share a plate at Osteens and then share a plate at Singleton's....I know, not very ChiTownDinerish, or Buffetbusterian...but it would be the best we can do.
