The Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches in the Midwest

There are quite a few familiar faces on this Serious Eats list of BPT eateries. Many of these places have been featured right here on Roadfood Trip Reports. I am certainly going to have to give some of these a try, there are some good looking BPT's in this list. Definitely need to get to Nick's. That's an awesome looking sandwich.

I've been touting TC's Point After in DeWitt IA  (usually to deaf ears) for years. Glad to see it made the list Now maybe people will star listening.

I've always preferred the dry breaded (flour, eggwash, crumb) to the wet batter crust.  Born and bred small town Iowa boy, that's all I ever knew and that's all I ever want.(OK, I lie. I'll eat it anyway.)  You can also usually order a breading-free grilled tenderloin(healthy-"er"), which can be nice, but just not the same.

It's a pretty good selection. I've had four of them. The article is accurate for a change too.

I'm curious which ones you think look disgusting.  I think they all look pretty tasty.

Shoot...The Friendly Tavern was recommended to me for my Indianapolis visit last summer but unfortunately it didn't make the final cut for logistical reasons.  And I rolled right past Prairie City, IA last spring without knowing about Goldie's...is there a "kicking myself" emoticon?

Do any of these places actually use the tenderloin? For that matter, why would anyone want to ruin pork Milanese by sticking it between pieces of bread with a salad?

I've never seen any place use the actual tenderloin for a BPT. It's always a loin cut, as far as I know. I have seen some places use tenderloin for a grilled PT. I've used the tenderloin for homemade versions, but they're not the same. More of a schnitzel-y version.

Sure, I have had the real pork tenderloin sandwich at several places and three places I conspired with the owner to come up with the sandwich when all they had on hand in their menu was true pork tenderloin. I have always used the tenderloin cut at home and if you butterfly cut the meat you can get a good size sandwich of a piece of meat measuring at least 5" x 11" as I have done so.

The pork loin cut is used to get those hubcap size sandwiches that make them curiosity sandwiches to draw customers. That's part of the mystique and I doubt many, if any, once breaded and fried could tell the difference in the meat cuts by taste if they were sized identically. There are a lot of variables in making a good BPT and any step could ruin one. I hope I know. I've only had 167 different restaurant tenderloins over just the past decade in 23 states and Canadian provinces. I'll probably add a half dozen more this spring. I have had every Iowa Pork Producer's Association best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich winner.

LOL!  I've seen both home cooks and diners use pork chops (de-boned) pounded out.  I've also eaten a pork steak pounded out and breaded.  "Interesting".

I've had pork chop sandwiches, usually fried up in a flour coating. If you de-bone them, though what you're left with is a piece of pork loin, like most places use.

Friendly's is my all time favorite I believe.  I eat about 8-10 of them/year.  Lucky for me I live nearby.  I consider Nick's to be a good BPT, but second tier, after my Top 5 -- Friendly's, Sahm's, Muldoon's, Nickel Plate, Gnaw Bone.  Nick's is probably #6.  I still have a few more to try in central IN -- Aristocrat, Plump's, Coachman, Gaslight, Pawn Shop -- are on my list.

I won't try to put Culver's (The Chain) up with the special independents in the "top of the hill" competition for Best BPT.... But today as we were running errands we hit the drive-thru at one of the two local Culvers and I enjoyed a fresh hot BPT on a toasted roll with grilled onions, tomato, and catsup (my selected add-ons), Then shared some onion rings with my wife and kept on moving to get the stuff done we needed to do before she left for her afternoon nursing shift. She did a double Bacon CheeseBurger... But I must say the Pork Sandwich is a real treat on a cold winter morning when it is an eat and run sort of day.

Finally tried one at the Plainfield, IN, Culver's. Actually very good. Had to get more Mayo though. And the toppings were on the bottom. Go figure.

That's because the list was compiled by one of Roadfood's very own: KingT.  I didn't make the connection until Mrs. Roadhouse coincidentally sent me a link to this same article.  As soon as I saw Titus' name I knew this list would be worth paying attention to.

For those not aware, KingT (also known as DaBeef over at LTHForum.com) is responsible for such memorable trip reports as Eating Big in Kansas City, Eating Big in Louisville, and Eating Big in NOLA among many others.  He is my hero (among others here--don't be jealous kids), and his list deserves more than a hint of respect.

There's another recently started thread going on called ROADFOOD "Bucket List".  Just read one of Titus' reports and watch your list grow exponentially!

I'm on the road right now but have had tenderloins at the Greenhouse in downtown Cleveland and the recent IPPA award winner at the Lucky Pig in Ogden, IA. Soon I hope to try some in the Phoenix area.
