The ChiTownDiner Pre-Breakfast Thread

A certain not-to-be-named Roadfooder has, on occasion, needed a meal before his breakfast. This was noted on the Kansas City Crawl when this Roadfooder made a daily pre-breakfast stop at Meshuggah Bagels.

Remember these?

Now this may be nothing but an amuse bouche to this certain Roadfooder, but for may of us this represents a complete breakfast. The idea with this thread is to list lighter breakfast stops: donut shops; bakeries; biscuit emporiums; the kind of place where you won't find a full service breakfast. I'm looking for places that may not warrant a full Roadfood review or may be otherwise overlooked.

For example, Sandra's Bakery in Sanford, NC doesn't look like much, but they serve almost heavenly donuts.

Light and soft, and topped and/or filled with natural house-prepared icings and fillings.

I have a major weakness for Sandra's donuts, and happily break my diet when they show up at work.

Call first before making the drive to Sanford. They close for a couple weeks each Summer and we were TTM'd on one visit.

How did Jen, the recently re-transplanted Chicagoan get involved in all of this ?

I didn't even know Sandra made donuts and we've been together 5 years, I told her to stick to her  Yankee Cookery which she does best!

Breaking my own rule, this is from a full service restaurant, but it is plausible that "That Roadfooder" would eat here before the scheduled breakfast.

In Chicago, Firecakes Donuts provides a nice Pre-Breakfast or a Late Nite Snack...why just last night, I had a Peach Cobbler Gelato Donut Sandwich....something I saw on Food Paradise on The Travel Channel!

With a PBR, Schlitz or High Life chaser, of course.

It appears that CTD is working on his Cheesehead bonafides before applying to immigrate. We do still have that religious test which imposes strict limits on Bears fans moving here.

MFL,

I had this at Blue's Egg sibling restaurant Story Hill BKC.

That's a Stromboli crepe in the foreground. A bit on the light-side for a CTD pre-breakfast, but very filling for me.

While I'm not sure I'm could or would have switch and become a Packer fan...the Bears organization sucks from top to bottom.

After enjoying Meshuggah Bagels so much in KC, my ears perked up when the Jewish guy from NYC I work with (yes, there is only one) discussed plans for a bagel breakfast. I asked and he told me that NYBD III (New York Bagel and Deli III) makes solid bagels.

The rye and everything bagels I ordered.

Located between a Walmart and a Harris Teeter in a busy strip mall, NYBD lacks the hipster charm of Meshuggah, but definitely has a proper deli feel. Worthy of a pre-crawl stop - right after a going to Sandra's for donuts and before getting biscuits at Sunrise or Rise.
