s_d, one way or another we'll get you there.  May need to execute the original plan from Smoke/Pie Day; dropping off passengers then coming to pick you up, but we'll figure it out.

On the food side, we're thinking about bringing Quebec Style Baked Beans (secret ingredient:Maple Syrup).  Also, just bought a big bottle of vodka for preparation of the Canadian National Cocktail, The Bloody Caesar!  Other than the vodka, all ingredients (Clamato juice, spicy green beans, special rimming salt) are authentic Canubian, smuggled in by nagle and Wawa Mama when they came down for the Nashville Crawl.

See you Sunday!
Buddy

Can I get a virgin Caesar?

Per our discussion at the Canada Day blowout, here's when we're free for the rest of July for our next Supper Club/Fish Fry/Steakhouse outing:
Tuesday 7/10-Thursday 7/12
Monday 7/16-Friday 7/20
Monday 7/23-Friday 7/27

BTW, billyboy gets in on the 27th.  Not sure what time they land, but maybe we ask our NYC friends if they'd be interested in a MKE Fish Fry.

Any of those dates work for us. What can we do to get ChiBears15 and David Sanders into a Wisconsin Supper Club?

The Del-Bar is staying in the family:

ChiBears15 has mentioned Ishnala as part of his proposed Baraboo crawl, but Del-Bar would be a worthy alternative.

Del-Bar is just as expensive as Ishnala, both beyond my price-point for supper club dining. Tourist traps catering to Flatlanders.

Back before the Dells were a year-round attraction and before we had kids, once a winter Mrs. C and I would go up there for a relaxing Friday or Saturday night getaway.  We had a great dinner one Saturday night in a very quiet, uncrowded Del-Bar, and on another occasion we were there during a snowstorm and were one of probably only three or four tables at Wally's House of Embers.  I remember us driving down the deserted main drag - a road practically impassable during the summer months - with the nighttime snow swirling around the car as we noticed all the seasonal places that were closed up tight.  It was almost surreal...

Not sure Mr. Maki and I can commit to anything (besides davidsanders's Evanston outing and whatever happens on this side of the cheddar curtain with billyboy) until after Labor Day.

I do really want to go back to Art & Alma's with the big group and to MFL's favorite prime rib place, K Ranch, so let's pick some dates for that in the fall!

Discussion at the last get together (whenever and wherever that was; it's all a blur these days) led us to a decision (I think; like I said "blur") to make Donny's Girl in Watertown our next stop on this ongoing tour.  We've got roughly 22 more days if we're going to officially call this our "summer" destination.

My weekends are pretty much booked with work, but we've got the 7th and 14th available for Fish Fry Fridays.  We've also got Saturday the 15th (if we go straight from Cheese Days in Monroe to Watertown) or Sunday the 16th.  The middle of those weeks are totally open, but, it looks like Donny's Girl is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

How about it folks, what do your calendars look like for September?  Added bonus: We can stop at Zweig's for a CheeseBurger appetizer!

Buddy,

Based on our experience, Fridays are to be avoided. I believe Bobbi works the night of the 15th. A Sauerbraten Sunday would interest us.

Not sure about Monday & Tuesday. I thought I saw nightly specials on those days.

Yeah, I spotted that Sauerbraten Daily Special when I checked out the menu.  Strong draw.  the only Sunday we've got open is the 16th, the day after Cheese Days.  Probably doable.  Might even grab a hotel room and just stay up there.  I've got a chunk of idle time between the 10th and the 21st.  Might just do a mini vacation in south central Wisconsin.  Maybe drive around and check out the markings on the cows.  We've got some rehabbing going on at the house, so it will depend on that schedule.

On the 16th the Packers host the Vikings at noon, but since Donny's Girl doesn't open until 3:30 my guess is that there won't be much of a football crowd to contend with.

Perhaps of interest to The Contingents:  https://www.tastecooking.com/highway-fine-dining-upper-midwest/

Supper clubs serving breaded fish and strong cocktails in rural Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa are not your normal restaurant—but it’s also hard to say why until you visit one.

rumaki,
Thanks for a lovely article, BUT WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT US??

The article made many good points in defining a Supper Club.  I especially liked the comparison to an old time night club, calling the Supper Club its "country cousin".  That's about as accurate and illustrative as you're gonna get in explaining it to someone who's never had the experience.

Nice find!

No, there is but one Contingent; all others are pale imitations.  Do not be fooled by lower-cost alternatives claiming to be equal to the original.

It's a pretty good article but I do have a quibble:

"I loved Mary’s description of the hors d’oeuvres plate—or relish tray, as it’s often called—another staple of a classic supper club experience."

Since Natalie Rinn wrote this from a first-person Upper Midwest perspective she should've used the term "relish tray" and then added the description afterward, not the other way around.  Always use the local terminology first and define it later if need be.

Thank you ScreamingRoyko.  Also, I think rumaki was referring to the individuals who make up The Contingent when she used the term "Contingents".  Actually we refer to ourselves as Contingencies.  A small forgivable error, considering the time and effort you've put in contributing to the 2019 planning efforts.

Big Fans.
Are there any actual dates being discussed for anything closer than the Dells?
Thanks

Elaine,

While you were out celebrating your anniversary in high style, the schlubs at the pizzeria decided that we'd go next to Donny's Girl Supper Club for dinner on September 16. A time has not been set yet.

The 16th is our anniversary so Mrs. Chicken and I are sitting in the fancy seats at Miller Park, but depending on the time chosen for dinner we might stop by on our way home.

Unless something dreadful happens we'll be there.  It's the day after we visit Cheese Days in Monroe.  We'll probably grab a hotel up in Dairyland and hang around until dinner.
