I must agree; a most egregious exclusion!

I did notice, though, that in one of the final scenes one of the diners shook his head when meat was suggested: "We're here for fish fry."  Some people I know could learn from that sentiment.

Do we think we can squeeze in a trip to Art & Alma's before the end of the year?

You may remember Buddy's post from our trip there back in February, where he and Mrs. Roadhouse, ScreamingChicken and I had a great meal, with 3/4 of us having what we think was the best prime rib we've ever had (Mr. Chicken just didn't indulge in cow that evening, but was happy enough with his perch plate).

They're located in Burlington, IL (sorry, Wisconsinites!), which is about 35 miles west of Arlington Heights. and due south from Elkhorn, WI.  They serve prime rib on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and there's an early and late bird special (in by 5:00pm or after 8:30pm) on Fridays and Saturdays, where you get 10% off any entree.  No matter what day we go, we would still probably want to get there early, like when they open at 4:00pm, because it is small, and from what we can tell, there are no reservations (unless we have a really big group and Buddy can sweet talk them into allowing it).  That early time will probably eliminate Fridays for people who work, though (not me- thank goodness for four day work weeks!)

I've created a Doodle with all of my available Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays between now and the weekend before Christmas.  I included Sundays because of the early start time.  I can do a little research to find out if there's anything else worthwhile in the area, but this may be a one and done kinda trip....except for Mott's Lounge down the block?

Since I'm out of the PM game, please PM Buddy for the Doodle poll link!  Or hit me up on Facebook and I'll send you the link there!

I was totally on board with this until you put "Buddy" and "sweet talk" in the same sentence.

An extra nudge...if we pick Sunday, October 28th as the Art & Alma's day, and if Buddy can get us reservations for maybe 5:00, anyone who's interested could go on this tour with us before dinner.  Looks like they only do select Sundays at 3:00 and I'm guessing October 28th is the last one for the season because there's no November or December options.

If 10/28 doesn't end up being the day we go to Art & Alma's, irisarbor and I are interested enough in the FLW house to go that day anyway- plans are being discussed on The Contingent Facebook page.

Based on the Doodle Poll and FB responses, this is the current head count:

quijote & sancho panza - 2
irisarbor & hubby - 2
JRPfeff & Pie Diva - 2
abe_froeman & Mr. Maki - 2
BuddyRoadhouse - 1 (Mrs. Roadhouse will be out of town)

Total of 9.

Anyone else?  Don't be scared my CheeseHead pals.  Even though you need to cross the state line to get there, once you're inside Art & Alma's it'll seem like you're right back in Wisconsin.

Re: The Contingent's Wisconsin Supper Club, Steakhouse & Fish Fry Tour 2018/10/07 23:29:36 (permalink)
I was in Geneva today and we decided to give Art and Alma's a try, just in case I'm not able to make the outing on October 28th. I enjoyed it very much, but I don't think I would call it my favorite prime rib of all time. That distinction (for me) still goes to Durgin Park.

It's a really nice old building, very small, but I'm sure Buddy will be able to work his magic and get a reservation for the required number.

They brought some good warm bread and butter right away.

I saw on the menu that they had a salad bar, but I didn't see it, so I thought maybe they had discontinued it. But when the waitress brought our salad plates and told us to help ourselves, she pointed to around the corner of the small dining area. It had a smallish selection of fresh items. I liked the coleslaw, broccoli salad, marinated cucumbers, pasta salad.

I also especially liked the pot of cheddar cheese and the terrific croutons.

My salad.

My "Mayor's Cut" prime rib. I should have known better than to order a pound and a half. The smaller size would have been more than enough. It was very good.

I had the house potatoes, a hash browns casserole. It wasn't what I had expected (maybe something served in a casserole dish?), but I liked it.

Jennie had the grits and blackened shrimp, and was kind enough to share some of the shrimp with me, which were quite good, not overly spicy.

All in all, it was a very good meal. I think if I go back I might order one of the steaks.

Somewhere in this thread this link to a Chicago Tribune feature on Supper Clubs is provided (Sorry, I don't recall who shared the link and don't want to look thru 33 pages of replies to find it again). I looked through the list today and found two Supper Clubs that we will be scouting in the near future. The six listed Supper Clubs are:
  • HobNob
  • Joey Gerard's
  • Supper
  • No No's
  • Klemme's Wagon Wheel
  • Wally's Spot Supper Club
We've been to HobNob and Joey Gerard's and found each to be outstanding. Supper is now closed.

No No's is on Hwy 33 between West Bend and Port Washington and will be our first target. Especially since we've been exploring this area lately for future Contingent outings.  Klemme's is near Sheboygan in Howards Grove and will be next.

Stay tuned for detailed reports and reviews (photography by CameraChi15).

I checked No No's menu and didn't see prime rib anywhere, not even as a Saturday special.  If you go there please verify.

They are proactively preventing conflicts between you and Ann.

Did you see Klemm's claim to fame is broasted chicken?

Odd that No-No's (no, I've never been) front page picture frame shows both Prime Rib and a salad bar but don't seem to offer either; at least not on their menus.

The Special for Saturday is notably missing from the list of No-No's Specials. They might've missed listing it on the website.

The attempt at getting reservations at Art & Alma's is only needed if we go on the 28th because of the Frank Lloyd Wright house tour that starts at 3:00pm that day.  It's only 9 minutes away from the restaurant, but it's likely it will last more than 45 minutes, which would mean we wouldn't make it to Art & Alma's until after they opened at 4:00pm.

If we go on another day, if we all get there by 3:45pm or so, we shouldn't need reservations.

If you are interested in the FLW house tour, you're responsible for getting your own ticket(s).  I'll be purchasing mine this Friday, and I know I'll be going regardless of what day Art & Alma's happens.

Buddy, I know your deadline to request days off for late October/November was coming up- did you request the 28th off?  Before we declare that the official day, do you want to call them to see if they'll take reservations for 4:30 or 5:00?  Better do 5:00.  I have no idea how long the FLW house tour will go.  It's only about 10 mins from Art & Alma's.

Based on who's responded to the Doodle poll, as well as JPfeff's comment above, we'd have ten- The Quijotes, The Roadhouses, The Froemans, The irisarbors, The Pfeffs.

The other good dates on the Doodle were Saturday 11/10, Sunday the 11th, and Saturday 12/1.  If anyone else who's interested can do any of these dates- 10/28, 11/10, 11/11, or 12/1- now's the time to speak up.  If we do the 28th, we need a slightly later start time and reservations.  Otherwise, the other dates would be at 4:00 sharp.  Saturdays have an early bird special if everyone's there by 5:00pm.

Yes, I did request the 28th off, although there will only be one member of the Roadhouse-hold attending.  Mrs. Roadhouse will still be away on her annual vacation from me.  Well deserved, I might add.  We'll need to discus the FLW aspect of the day.
