I think it might be useful to start a new thread for a Contingent Wish List, a place where we can go to pitch and discuss loosely thought out ideas for future tours.  Once there's enough support for a specific tour, we can give it its own thread.

Good idea.  We could call it the Strategy Center, War Room, Think Tank, or something like that.

I agree about the supper club idea. And there are a lot cheaper places. For instance, The Corner house in Racine is much less expensive-their largest prime rib serving is 27.95( and they have plenty of it!) and their largest filet is 30.95. And they put free appetizers out for you to enjoy while waiting to be seated. Just an example of what is out there......I know I certainly cant afford to eat at places like the 5 O'clock often.

Newport Shores in Port Washington & Eric's Porter-Haus in Waukesha also fit the bill (SC is not the only Punster here).

Eric's offers German specialities that may be of interest to Buddy.

This 5 O'clock Club of which you all speak wouldn't happen to have anything to do with THE 5 O'clock Club of Miami Beach fame from the '40s and '50s that was owned by Martha Raye would it? I mean, does she hang out there? Does Sinatra still show up? Sophie Tucker, Joe E. Lewis, Jack Leonard?

Martha Raye & Sinatra are dead.

But thanks to extra strength Polident her dentures will live forever.

Newport Shores looks like a good candidate for next spring or summer, being as it's up in Port Washington and that's a drive for nicer weather.  The Yelpers are mixed on Eric's Porter Haus and Corner House but either of those might be a better choice for January or February...anything else to the southeast that would shorten the trip for the Flatlanders?  Plus I'm sure Buddy wants to try another Racine/Kenosha motel.

Buddy,
While this has absolutely nothing to do with supper clubs, there was a story in the local paper today about the hotel that you stayed at in Racine during the summer. The Racine County Department of Social Services recently ran out of funding for $40 vouchers given to the homeless to stay there.
Next time, call me.

If anyone is up in Boulder Junction the last weekend in October, we'll be dining at The Guides Inn, our absolute favorite supper club up north. www.theguidesinn.com

You've never heard of Sophie Tucker?  Oh, my dear, you would have loved Sophie Tucker!  A nice Jewish Girl who could swear like a sailor. Her nickname was "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas".  Your kind of woman!

I'm pretty sure all the others are goners too.

MH, it's not likely there's any relationship between the two operations.

The homeless stay there for 40 bucks a night?!?  That means I overpaid by about $15!

Has anyone (CSD?) ever eaten at Colony House in Trevor?  The prices don't look too bad and the Yelp reviews are generally favorable.

Buddy and Stricken Detective,

Fat Jack Leonard is gone and Joe E. Lewis, too. Jack Leonard was a fantastic comedian, and Joe E. Lewis was one of the greats. Sinatra starred as Joe E. Lewis in The Joker Is Wild, a biopic that explored the nightclub comic's life and how he switched from being a singer to a comic after the Chicago mob slit his throat (and his vocal cords) for leaving a mob-supported club for another joint.

Post Time!

Oh, yeah, one more thing. Sophie Tucker was a cousin of mine.

Re: Elias Inn Supper Club (Watertown, WI) 2015/10/20 20:54:37 (permalink)
MH,
In spite of my "yoot", I'm familiar with all of them.  I even saw "The Joker Is Wild", shown on TV, as a young child.  Most of it bored me as a kid, but there was one scene that terrified me.  The scene where the mobsters go into Lewis' dressing room, then exit, all in one continuous shot IIRC, only to be followed a few moments later by Lewis (Sinatra), stumbling out, clutching his throat, blood pouring down his chest.  My mother tried to reassure me that it was all fake, just props and makeup in a movie, but I was still pretty shaken up.  It scarred me (seriously, no pun intended) for a long time.

My Dad made me aware of Jack E. Leonard years ago.  I think he's best described as the man who made Don Rickles possible.  The Dick Van Dyke Show paid tribute to Leonard in an episode seen here.  A Jack E. Leonard type comedian is brought in to make producer Mel Cooley agree to rehire the just released Buddy Sorell.  The scene starts at 43:24 and runs about five minutes.

Those family Thanksgivings with cousin Sophie must have been a hoot!

I met her just once, and it was at the Copacabana in New York at her table with this skinny guy named Sinatra. I was with another cousin who actually knew her well, composer-lyricist Harold Rome. Now Fat Jack Leonard was really special. In addition to being funny as hell, and an insult artist of great repute, as a dancer he was as light on his feet as a ballerina.

Buddy,

I updated my previous post. Eric's Porter Haus offers German food as well as Supper Club fare. Although not shown, you can get spaetzle as a side with any entree.

I am thinking that their Hunter-Jaeger Sauce is exactly that........Hunter Sauce (sauce chasseur), which is mushrooms, shallots and tomatoes in demi-glace, with a dose of Jagermeister.  It's made of herbs and spices and would certainly marry well with the sauce.

No, thank you.  I saw enough carnage wrought by Jaegermeister in my younger years...fortunately I was never one of the unfortunate ones!
