ann,
So sorry to hear about your injury.  If you can't join us, we'll lift a Taco and a glass of Horchata to your health.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

It looks like an amazing tour, but unfortunately, we probably won't be able to go. My niece is visiting us that weekend (and we just got confirmation about the visit), so will probably stay in the Milwaukee area to show her around, etc. I will float the idea of the taco tour to her, just in case, but she's not really into this sort of thing. If you post pictures of the good eats you have, I promise I will sigh and wish I could have gone.

I should be in and if it's just me, I'll ride with Gyp. If Mrs. MFL comes along, we'll drive.

How old is this niece of yours?  How much do you like her?  More importantly, is she smaller or larger than you?  If you've still got the height and weight advantage, just hogtie her and toss her in the trunk.  It's only 113 miles from Milwaukee to Aurora; just under two hours in the car.  By the time you let her out she'll be thrilled to be anywhere and totally in for a Taco Tour.

Be sure to promise her Mexican Ice Cream and a visit to a Trolley Museum.  Kids LOVE Trolley Museums.

Q - I almost missed this due to a business trip to Santander. The trip's been delayed so I'll be eating tacos next week & Jamon in a couple weeks.

Amazingly and weirdly, she's only a couple of years younger than I (she's my half-brother's daughter)..... She served in the Army, worked in hospital emergency rooms, and currently does some sort of medical administration stuff (two weeks here, two weeks there) that I don't quite get. She's also had a few kids (military guys) and a grandkid (a rambunctious lad). I'm afraid I'd lose the battle if I tried to force her across the Cheddar Curtain: she's certainly no kid, and she'd likely whoop me during a scuffle. As far as the weekend goes, ya never know-- she had work stints in Madison several years back, yet she's a workaholic, so maybe she never quite made it to Chicagoland. We may be showing up for the tour after all, but my guess is that we'll be staying in the Milwaukee area to visit microbreweries.

Lucky you-- twice! The northern coast of Spain is lovely, but please leave some ham for everyone else, or there may be a national crisis!

As it turns out we're going to be in the northern Fox Valley region next Sunday but will still be unable to participate in the tour.  Not to make you all jealous, but...

We're getting close folks!  The itinerary is written, printed out and enough copies made for all.

How shall we do this?  Do we want to meet at Casa de Roadhouse and caravan to Aurora, or everyone just go direct?

How much interest in actually riding the trolley at the Trolley Museum?  It's $5 round trip, and we might get a group discount if enough people want to ride.

I think Gyp was planning on heading straight to Aurora.
I'd probably ride the trolley if people wanted to.

I'm curious about the invitation inside the gates of the Sanders' Compound. Is a breakfast buffet being offered? Leftovers from Burt's? Or just the usual Bar-b-que sauce with a straw?

Just sauce; bring your own straw.

The only reason I thought we might meet at our house was to consolidate cars in order to save on tolls out to Aurora.  But then I realized it would be pointless since the Wisconsin folks want to leave directly from our last stop (wherever it may be).  My plan would have required you to return south to Des Plaines to retrieve cars.  So nuts to all of that.

Re: Who Loves Tacos? The Contingent Does! The Fox River Valley Taqueria Tour, Fall 2016 2016/10/04 14:34:03 (permalink)
Many thanks to all who participated in last weekend's Taqueria Tour.  The Fox River Valley will never be the same after an invasion by The Contingent!

The weather was very cooperative up to a point.  Partly cloudy with just enough sun poking through for the early stops.  It lasted all the way through our trolley ride along the river.  Even then, we only suffered through light rain while in transit to the last few stops.  Once we arrived the drops held up long enough for us to get from our cars to a nice warm table.

Highlights included a big complimentary plate of melt-in-your-mouth tender Skirt Steak at Taqueria Muniz, huge portions of delicious Grilled Chicken at El Pollo Giro, spotting a beautiful White Heron standing in the shallows of the Fox River during the aforementioned trolley ride, a second helping of those delectable Shrimp and Bacon Tacos at Tacos El Norte (also the surprisingly good chorizo, shared by ChiBears15), and the crispy deliciousness of sliced-from-the-spit Al Pastor Tacos at La Rosita Taqueria.  After the group called "uncle" we also drove by the last stop on the list and after looking in, decided Taqueria Las Cumbres might be worth making a return trip.

I've got a bunch of pictures, and if I ever figure out how to post them on this site, I'll be happy to share.  In the meantime, perhaps the more enlightened photographers in the bunch can post their pix.

Thanks again,
Buddy
