Just got my May schedule and we're totally confirmed for Stolley's Hogg Alley for Friday, 5/13.  Who else is in, and what time are we shooting for?  Just a reminder, although we're totally free, there may be other Flatlanders with work commitments at least into late afternoon.

Time for a roll call!

Mr. Maki and I are in.  The earliest we could leave the area is probably 4:45 or so- however long it takes Mr. Maki to get from work to your house if he leaves around 4:00.

Rather than him coming to us after work, we're going meet Mr. Maki as he wraps up at 4pm.  Given Friday afternoon rush hour traffic, I think a 6pm meeting time is doable.  Any objections?

Finally able to log in. Called Stolleys, they do not take reservations for Friday. The Fish Fry is very popular. I can get there early and put name on list, but we can't be seated until the entire party is there. I will need a full head count by that morning. Thanks

I'm picking Gyp up and we should be there before 6. We will drink for 10 until you relieve us. Traffic from Miller Park west until up to at least Moreland Road will probably be as bad as bad can be so practice your mantra and become Zen-like to pass the time. Imho, I think it will be worth it. The forecast and the temperature says we won't be eating outside.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to decline this time around.  It's been a long day and I just don't have a 1+ drive each way, especially coming back on a full stomach after 7:30, so I'll just have to enjoy the dinner vicariously through everyone else.

BOFS (Korbel, of course) awaiting ScreamingChicken at Stolley's Hogg Alley.

He's still not here, someone should cut me off.

Oh my. The serve a fishfry at Stolley's on Friday, too. Looks like walleye.

Re: The Contingent's Wisconsin Supper Club, Steakhouse & Fish Fry Tour 2016/05/14 01:12:32 (permalink)
Dang, you're fast dude.  Whoever develops your film is way quicker than the guy ScreamingChicken uses.

Anyway, it was a spectacular evening.  Just two complaints: the weather and the selling out of the Clam Chowder minutes before we sat down to order.  We planned this outing for late spring with hopes it would be warm and dry enough in case we needed to wait for a table, or decided to eat, outside.  Tonight's cold and rainy upper Midwest climate made both impossible.  Fortunately, there was plenty of room to wait inside, plus there was cheap liquor to keep up our spirits while we waited a short half hour to be seated.

Once settled we developed our strategy for ordering from the Friday Night Fish Fry choices.  The Roadhouse Clan chose the Walleye, Blue Gill, and Cod, plus an add on of butterflied shrimp on two of the dinners.  While we waited, complimentary bowls of German Potato Salad and cole slaw were delivered with plates of fresh warm marbled rye bread.  All of it was excellent and greatly appreciated since we were denied our Clam Chowder.

After that came the apps.  Deep fried cheese curds, cheese snaps (basically a Tater Tot like nibble with cheese and a hint of jalapeno), and a fried veggie basket.  The cheese snaps were the highlight, but everything hit the spot.

Finally, the main event made its way to our table.  All the fish was fried beautifully with minimal, yet crunchy batter.  Wonderful flavor and texture from all, but the big winner was the Walleye.  A nice thick fillet, very moist and flaky; stretching intimidatingly across the platter.

As good as the fish was, the real star on the plate was the delicious Potato Pancake.  Nice crisp exterior, creamy inside with more than a hint of onion.  We made the mistake of ordering 1/2 fries (fresh cut and pretty darned good) and 1/2 Pancake.  As good as the fries were, the Potato Pancake was so much better.  We'll know for next time.

And there will be a "next time".

The night ended with the customary stop at Kopp's for frozen custard.  abe_froeman and I split a Chocolate Banana Cream Pie Sundae.  Mr. Maki slurped down a Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake.  And Mrs. Roadhouse went low key with a dish of Butter Pecan Custard.

Many thanks to Pie Diva for selecting tonight's dinner.  It was good to see both her and JRPfeff after a long winter apart.  Also making the evening special, Mr. and Mrs. MilwFoodlovers and Gyp.

So sorry to those who were unable to make it, especially ann peeples.  Annie, hope Bob is feeling better soon.

Buddy

P.S. The suggestion of the Duncan Hines recommended "Fox And Hounds" was made for the next meeting later this summer.

B.

p.p.s. Now that the Pittsburgh Crawl is in the books, and tonight's dinner is in our bellies, I'll start working diligently on the next two Contingent outings, "Taste of Des Plaines II" and "The Fox River Valley Taqueria Tour".  Firm(ish) dates will be announced in the next few days.

Best wishes for Bob, Ann!

I see mention of walleye, bluegill, and cod...didn't anybody get the perch?

JRP, I'll catch up on those 2 BOFs and then some the next time around as long as Mrs. Chicken is there to drive home.  It looks like something evil lurking in one of those shot glasses, though.

I'm sorry I missed the dinner but not sorry I missed a 75-minute drive home in the rain and dark.  Mrs. C and I went into town to pick up our daughter from work at 9:00 and that 4-mile drive was bad enough.  Some nice Friday I'll head to Stolley's straight from work and check it out myself...

Fox & Hounds looks like a good choice.  I shall commence saving my pennies forthwith.

Fox & Hounds appears pricey, but keep in mind their menu prices reflect a "buy-one-get-one" deal, seven days a week.  Assuming Mrs. Screaming is with you, you'll eat fairly economically.

Fox and Hounds is a very cool scenic historic restaurant. It is on its 3rd set of owners since Duncan visited yet it has been open continuously since the 1930's. None of the food is bad, but the only thing I'd order is the duck which was extraordinary. It was one of the finest I'd ever eaten. Imho, if possible, we should visit on a Saturday when there is also live music. Keep in mind that desserts are also 241 which makes this a fairly frugal evening. They even offered several sugar free desserts although that may no longer be the case. It's not on the menu that I could see, but my last visit 2 years ago had us drinking 241 ice cream drinks. Brandy Alexander anyone?

Single diners might want to visit the owners well run tavern and restaurant where they made their fortune, The Mineshaft in nearby Hartford. They do not have 241 but they do have lower prices and many items are comparable. http://www.mineshaftrestaurant.com/our-menu
It is very casual but they have done well with their ownership of the more upscale Fox and Hounds. It should be a great night.

I thoroughly miss the Wisconsin fish fries when I lived in Green Lake. I used to pig out at a small tavern serving AUCE fried cod accompanied by fantastic golden crispy potato pancakes. Unfortunately, this gem of a restaurant has closed and I no longer reside in Wisconsin.

So the secret to eating at Fox & Hounds is to have an even number of diners, no matter how odd they may be.

At least The Mineshaft has fried chicken.

Edit: I was looking for F&H on Google Maps and found an interesting place right up the road: Alpine Retreat.  Anyone ever been there?

Edit #2: Copper Dock is another restaurant on Friess Lake.  So many choices, but all 3 are probably overrun with "those people" on summer Saturdays...

........Alpine Retreat.  Anyone ever been there?

Never heard of it but I had many great meals at the Alpine Village going back 60 years. They had a trout stream inside the restaurant insuring the freshest fish. However I don't think it was under that ownership. The original owners, the Buchel brothers were from Lichtenstein and one brother wrote operettas in his spare time. The menu certainly looks interesting and it (the restaurant) is in a very beautiful part of Wisconsin. Even Ricky Gervais would enjoy visiting Holy Hill.

Never been to either, SC. But like Mike I ate at Alpine Village years ago. First time I ever had frog legs. ( and yes, in my minds eye, they tasted like chicken)

Need advice from the local cheesehead community. Hypothetically speaking, if one were planning to attend a Brewers game on a Friday evening, would there be an ideally situated locale for a fish fry nearby, with hours suitable to accommodating a 7 pm(ish) first pitch, and easily accommodating a group of say....eight?

I'm not a cheese head but I walked to the ballpark from this place.
Mlwkfoodlovers recommended it.
