Looks like a great lineup for Friday, although you are making a huge detour to Calumet from Top Notch when Jimmy Jams is only a few blocks away. Although I guess having some travel time will be good to help get some digesting done. ;)

Jimmy Jams opens at 10am.  While distance is a consideration, availability of the goods....aka - are they open? also needs to be considered.  I was surprised to see such a late start but typically the week before I make confirmation calls.  It's still a draft.

OK here is a gentle reminder of good things to come...

A simple Sweet Pepper Italian Beef, opened up so you can see the Beef
then - neater for the fussy ones who go for appearance-

Served with your choice of some outstanding Salads and 'AntiPasto'

With some marinated cold meats on the salads for extra Protein !!

Two views of the GELATO Choices...look closer at that Lemon !!

And finally, Here is Buddy doing a fine job of checking Quality of several dishes and the Italian Ice Offerings as well.
This looks to be one of the best city tours yet.

I do wish I could join you for this particular stop. We go back a long way with Freddies and love to sample just about everything they make.  Enjoy your visit.

Al,
Your post couldn't be more timely.  I just walked in the door following another "research" trip to Big Guys Sausage and Freddy's.  My visit confirmed that both spots are ready for our group's onslaught, and that they are both worthy of inclusion in this tour.  Based on the portions offered at both places, the biggest danger on this trip will be unexpected exploding Roadfooders.

Hello All,
We're reaching "crunch time" for some of the events we have planned for the GCSDAIBC and we still need some answers from those who are planning to attend.

For starters, i still haven't heard from more than half a dozen people who indicated they'd be joining us for Sunday's private party at Burt's Place.  I hate to name names, but the following people haven't responded to my PM regarding ingredient preferences: CajunKing, ChiTownDiner (sightly embarrassing), fenix 107 (and friend), Gyp, irisarbor (and family?), Mr. Maki (my own son-in-law, slightly embarrassing for me), and rareporterhouse.  Please folks, we need to know for sure if you're going to attend this event and what kind of pizza you prefer so we can place the order.  Either get back to me here in the thread or send a PM with that information.

Also, I've picked up some hints and suggestions in other threads from people who seem like they might be planning to join the group for some or all of the weekend's events.  Let me make this clear: ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN IN FOR ANY PART OF The Great Chicagostyle HotDog and Italian Beef Crawl.  However, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP UNANNOUNCED.  Many of the stops we're making have been planned and timed out for a specific number of people.  If you want to join the group, PLEASE SIGN UP ON THE DOODLE POLL so we know you're coming.

Finally, all the pieces are in place for Saturday's leg of the crawl.  I think everyone will be thrilled with the choices we've made and the outstanding versions they'll sample of two iconic Chicago sandwiches.  I've seen the partial list of ChiTownDiner's ChiTownFavorites for Friday and I can tell you, it will be a busy and fun-filled day.  We're still making decisions for Thursday's Welcome to Chicago Dinner, but with just under two weeks to go, I think we'll have a good pick in place by the time the out-of-towners get here.

See you all soon!
Buddy

There is nothing I would like better than to invite you all to stop on Cermack Ave at the Sandwich Shop My GrandMother operated, while Grandpa worked as an engineer at the big Western Electric facility across the street. My Mother was a school student in Cicero in those days and worked before and after school at the restaurant, helping her Mother. She walked home late in the evening each night by herself, after closing up and depositing the days cash in a night drop in the local bank. I asked her about her personal safety and her fear of being robbed and she just laughed.. This was in the mid-1920's and that part of town was "Al Capone's home neighborhood. It was the safest area in all of Chicago", she told me.
Here is the East End Eat Place at 22 and Cermack in 1924. the gentleman behind the counter is my Grandfather who helped open up and get the coal-stove going each morning before going to work himself.
The renovated bldg currently houses Mexican food centers.

Have the starting gate positions for the first  days race been drawn yet ?...
I want to be sure, before I do my 'Off-Track-Wagers' that certain heavily (no-pun) favored roadfooders don't get the advantage of a Poll-Position for the early menu-stops...Better Put ChiTwnDnr between MH and Lisa, that way he will be so busy turning his head back and forth listening to them, he'll probably miss a meal 'en total' here and there... THEN make the CHICAGO folks sit mixed with the MILWAUKEE people...two reasons...they won't understand what the other person is saying, and less talk equals faster meal turn over time !
And for Heavens sake don't let WJ start talking about his layover experiences at the Chicago Airport wienie stands...
Perhaps I should let Janet wait for me to pick her up at the Louisville airport after her midnite arrival Saturday... This party sounds like it may need a chaparone !!

Al,
Even our jabbering could not cause CTD to miss a crumb, much less a meal 'en total'!!!!!  And besides, if he were in between us, where would we put our food?????

He's (CTD) a fine gentleman, and will watch over your selections carefully. Here he is watching Buddy 9 years ago, Once a Roadfooder...always a Roadfooder...

and earlier, taking the pressure off on the way to dinner the night before--We were headed for Three Brothers, and he was concerned that he would not get a normal meal there....

Finally my sandwich that day at Freddies, Meatballs and Peppers in Red Sauce. I couldn't look at those big sad eyes as I ate, It made me feel that I had taken a child's only meal for the day...until his wife made him stop with the staring !!

I dunno.  I'm still afraid I'll starve to death if I sit next to CTD.  Heck, I nearly starved to death in Mobile sitting between Al and Mike S.  Those two were gobbling down oysters like there was no tomorrow.  After 3 dz. I decided I'd better order some dinner!

Yeah that was really clever, Lisa. Mike and I are knocking down dozens of Oysters, so you order The 'Lutefisk' and 'Blubber' knowing that we would pass on your Eskimo pie dinner !
Well CTD has a broaden taste range...The only difference between CTD and the Viking Raiders pillaging the tables of their neighbors, is that CTD is so kind and friendly that you will be passing your vittles to him without his saying much of anything...the Eyes and the 'Grunts' will say it all. He has mastered the John Belushi image.  Best of luck.

As a side note, I will make sure we have enough stops to cover everyone!  Most of you don't realize that I fast for several hours before these Roadfood adventures!

Special note to the Mayor....I believe Janet's airline of choice has already informed you that her plane will be arriving late, now published for a midnight arrival.  Get the calzone order in and we'll see you at 5pm!

The stragglers are starting to accumulate.  in addition to Carolina Bob, stricken_detective has also joined our ranks.  Welcome aboard folks!  Message to s_d, please PM me with your preferred Pizza Toppings for Sunday's private party at Burt's.

BTW, based on several PM's I've received lately, I edited the Doodle Poll to reflect drop outs and additions.  Please check the poll to make sure your attendance is accurately reflected.  Thanks.

Ten-day Chicagoland forecast shows upper 60's and dry.  Not bad....although, there was a day in 1933 (I believe) that buffetbuster and I were enjoying a slice of pie and the temperature varied by 2 degrees from the forecast....so be prepared!

Buddy and I will be finalizing, confirming and sampling our last few joints before I complete work on THE Spreadsheet.  It is very difficult to attach in Roadfood, so if you want a copy prior to meeting up with me, send me a PM with an email address and I'll send it out on Monday.  It is an Excel format and is meant as a loose organizational framework.  Times are as close as possible but many factors influence that.  You don't have go to every stop and many folks will certainly have places they want to visit.  It's a big city with lots of options!

Weather looks good so far as I indicated above.

Buddy needs to hear from all Sunday folk interested in Burt's...he gave some direction in a previous thread #426.

We're a week out and everyone should be in training!

You guys may make your jokes, but here is a family story my Mother passed to me related to your Danger level comment.
I made a point to comment earlier on Mother's remark about her safety at night walking home after closing GrandMothers Restaurant on Cermack and stopping at the nite drop at the bank on the way.... due to it being Capone's home neighborhood, or that of his foremen, in 1924-27 or so.
Well one day Grandmother was ill with a fever, too ill to open the place, so Mother skipped school to run it during the day by herself, with Grandfather helping during his lunch break and coming in for a bit in the afternoon, but then he went home to assist his wife.  During the day Several of the regular customers inquired as to where GrandMother was, and why my Mother (aged 13 or 14 at the time) was there by herself. Before dark that day a Doctor appeared at the house to check on Grandmother's condition and after an examination, left some medication that helped break her fever over that night.  The Grandparents had not called for Medical help...They could not afford to do that... but when they asked the Doctor what his bill would be, he replied that he was doing this call as a favor to one of Mr Capone's assistants who was worried about the little girl trying to fill her Mother's shoes in his favorite lunch stop. No, there was no 'protection money, or shake-down...Mother never remembered seeing Capone in person, but there was no question as too whose neighborhood it was, in those days.

MICHAEL-  White Castle is selling it's Waffle Sandwiches now...
