Point well made....my grandparents on both sides also lived in that neighborhood (as we have discussed often) and have mentioned similar stories.

CTD perhaps someday you and I should run one of those Ancestry DNA test kits.

I am really looking forward to a stop-by-stop review of the expedition. The day is fast approaching when non-participants will be able to attach a body cam to a participant and also launch a drone and do a real-time off-site ride-along !

I changed my mind. Instead of White Castles I went to Skyline and got a large four-way with onions. I do like the Greek meat sauce they put on their spaghetti. But I wish we had a Camp Washington around here.

We have used the Ancestry DNA test to link our branch of the family to a family with the same surname that I found on a genealogy search on line..and exchanged info with over several years before we jointly decided to try to prove the tie between us...and a third party, my second cousin in Prague. It was an interesting experiment. I could not be a subject as my family link was thru a female (my Mom) so I got one of my cousins- the son of my Uncle- a male link in our lineage to be our DNA sample.  Then the Czech sample who was connected just 2 generations back (our grandfathers were brothers)..then the new 'strangers with the same name..they had come from the same part of the CZ Rep. but left in 1968. Knew some of 'our' family relatives back there, but did not think they were connected.  The DNA test showed a connection somewhere between 7-12 generations back. Church fire in the village destroyed all records in the 1850's so no hope of proving when...but folk tales say that it is about 4 ggg-grandfathers back. That after digging into the priests journals etc in the village history.
So the DNA Testing can be very interesting in itself..and the data sheets provided are worth the investment.

Joe - While I understand it is a single bed room, several folks are willing to cost share....with 4 in the room, you're down to $5.60 a head.  Even better!

Was it determined what's happening Thursday night?

Mr. Maki won't be able to make it Friday- the poor S.O.B. has to work.

And, per Buddy's blessing, a couple of friends of Mr. Maki's and mine will be joining us on Sunday.

The Doodle has been edited accordingly.

We're in the home stretch folks!  Our Welcome to Chicago Dinner is just five days away.  After that the fun really begins as we roam the city and suburbs in search of Chicago's best grub.

Updates will be coming fast and furious, so keep your eyes peeled for new and important information both here on the thread and in the form of PMs.

And here's the first big chunk of news:

The Burt's Pizza List

Having carefully examined all your pizza ingredient requests, this is the combination of pies I've come up with.  Please look it over and make sure there are at least two pizzas you'd be interested in trying.  The idea is for people to mix and match and try different combinations so they get a true appreciation of the much misunderstood Chicago Pan Pizza.

The per head cost will be roughly $16 $17.  That price includes the pizza itself, salad, garlic bread and soft drinks.  Beer and Wine will be extra.  Only a few people said they weren't interested in the salad and garlic bread, so it will be available on all tables and the cost evenly distributed.

If there are any questions or concerns, they can be addressed here on the thread or in a PM to me.

I got so excited about the pizzas, I forgot to mention Sunday's schedule.  Those pizzas will be out of the oven and ready to serve at noon sharp on Sunday, May 3rd.  We'll have access to the restaurant starting a little after 11am so we'll have time to get our drink orders in and eat salad and garlic bread.

You may have noticed that the first three pizzas are pretty basic.  To be honest, nobody asked for such simple pies, but I took it upon myself to add them in.  I placed a similar order a few years back when The Contingent had a private party at Burt's.  I chose those basic pies because I felt they showcased the essentials of Chicago Style Pizza.  That decision was met with objections from several quarters, but I persisted.  When the actual event took place, the objectors took the honorable route and admitted that, for a plain cheese pizza, it was pretty darned good.

While I certainly enjoy a pizza with multiple ingredients, the occasional plain cheese pie is an almost Zen-like experience, reducing the pie to its most basic elements.  Call it the "Uncarved Block" of the pizza world.  However, if there is enough protest, I will replace those basic pizzas with more complex ingredients.

There will be plenty of on the street parking both right in front of the store and across the street (no parking rules on that block don't apply on Sunday).  Any other questions, please ask!

No. 1 and No. 2 are perfect as far as I'm concerned. Y'all (those from Pittsburgh, it's Yinz, and those from Beaver County it's Younz) can have the rest.

Toll roads... Most of the East coast uses Easy Pass transponder for paying tolls, I know Pa does and I'm pretty sure Ohio does as well.

How about Indiana and Illinois? Or do they have a different system? Hopefully they use easy pass that way I won't have to worry about small bills or change.

Thanks,
MikeS.

Currently my plan is to leave home on Wednesday afternoon arriving in Chicago area Thursday noon time-ish. On the return trip I don't have to be anywhere until Thursday night, when I have to start back at work. Unless I get a great offer that sidetracks me and I have to call in sick :-)

I am simply trying to warn you in advance. If that is an area that you do not want to stay for $100 a night, then you should make a back-up reservation. I travel a lot and I participate in many travel forums. $10 a night at courtyards are not honored.
