what's a depression dog?

A misnomer, mostly.

Here's an excerpt from the CSD guide I wrote up for this weekend's Crawl:
"There are several very specific ingredients that make up the true CSD.  First and most important; an All-Beef Hot Dog, preferably from Vienna Beef, but there are other acceptable brands out there.  The Hot Dog rests in a steamed Poppy Seed Bun and is covered with the Seven Holy Condiments: Mustard, Onion, Relish (usually “neon green” in color, but almost any sweet relish will do), Tomatoes (sliced or wedged), a Pickle Spear (ideally a “half sour” style pickle), Sport Peppers (more vinegary than hot, but still packs a little punch), and a shake of Celery Salt.

The most common variation...is “The Minimalist Dog” which gets down to basics, using only the Mustard, Relish, Onion, and Sport Peppers; usually eschewing the Poppy Seed Bun for a plain version (still steamed of course).  Many people mistakenly refer to this rendition as a “Depression Dog”.  The logic being that during the tough times of the Great Depression (the one in the ‘30s, not the one we’re getting over at the moment), customers couldn’t afford the fully loaded CSD, so this pared down version was created.

In fact, the opposite is true.  The lack of cash made the “full meal on a bun”, for a nickel no less, a very attractive selling point.  Prior to that era, cart operators served their Hot Dogs topped with whatever condiments were common to their ethnic tastes.  Greek, Italian, Polish, German, and Jewish peddlers, all competing for customers, realized that they could make more sales by combining the other guy’s ingredients with their own.  Thus, each contributed a small piece of what we now know as the Classic CSD."

I'm guessing our resident PhD (Professor of Hot Dogs), chicagostyledog, will have a similar if not more accurate explanation, but that's the basic lore.  I defer to his greater knowledge of the subject, and accept any corrections from him graciously.

We'll be enjoying Classic CSDs, Minimalist Dogs, and some Gourmet variations during this Saturday's tour.  As mentioned above, pictures should be available all day long.

For all of you brave Roadfood warriors on the trail this weekend in ChiTown:

CTD and leechef, I think Joey's "Thanksgiving pants" at the 1:15 mark should do the trick.  And a nod to buffetbuster at the 1:43 mark!  Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint!

Have fun this weekend.  Wish I could be there!

Not only do we have a great line-up of food stops touching on many of the ethnic and neighborhood places that make Chicago a great city, we've got sunny skies and 70's for the weekend!

Also, as shown on today's front page of the Chicago Tribune Sports section....
1. Blackhawks open round 2 playoffs vs. Minnesota on Friday and Sunday at home.
2. Richest boxing fight in history on Saturday night from Vegas.
3. Milwaukee Brewers visit Wrigley Field in a 3 game homestand for the Cubs.
4. White Sox travel to Minnesota for 4 games.
5. The Kentucky Derby on Saturday around 5:20pm local time.
6. The Bulls have game 6 and hopefully no game 6 vs. Milwaukee.
7. That's Cubs, Hawks, Sox and Bulls all playing Wisconsin or Minnasota, our border states and great   rivalries.
8. Chicago plays host to the NFL Draft which promises to lure over 250,000 folks into downtown Chicago.  Lots of street closures and exhibit areas set-up.

Toddlin' Town...here we come....see you all at 7:30pm!  Rumor has Danny (Chibears15) picking up the tab!  Sweet!

I'm at my hotel in Des Plaines resting up for the beginning of this weekend's marathon.

Weber's bakery fit my request very well. That was my first stop in Chicago and it worked out nicely since it was before my hotel. Although traffic from the bakery to the hotel was quite a bear. A Chicago bear that is.

Traffic was like a poor professional football team?

That simile makes no sense.

What he meant to say was, "traffic was really 'Packed' from the bakery to the hotel."  "Packed" as in moving slowly and not going anywhere.

See, we've broken The Contingent's cardinal rule: You can discuss politics, sex, and religion, but nobody talks about Bears/Packers football. Just three posts and it's already getting ugly.

On a happier note, this is it folks, the Big Weekend is upon us!  Some folks are already in town or arriving very shortly.

If anyone needs transportation to tonight's Welcome Dinner at 7:30, please send me a PM and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

I don't want to get us beat up if the restaurant is on the South side. My Shark jersey is a Cubbies jersey.

Buddy, though I now live just south of Ottawa, I was born and raised in Montreal. Stlii a die hard Montreal fan;
Canadiens
Allouettes
Expos ( Nationals to some of you)
And south of the border, the Giants.

Glad to hear everyone is enjoying themselves. I flew into Chicago early this morning. I then took the just under three hour drive to Sheboygan, for a Double Brat with Kraut, grilled onions and BUTTER  and a Poppy Seed Schaum Tort at The Charcoal Inn- I won't make the mistake of adding butter next time, I didn't want raw onions and pickles, I learned after going to the Old Fashioned in Madison 4 years ago that I  didn't like it. I then went to a nature Preserve in Green Bay and then took the Lambeau Field tour. Afterwards an early dinner at Kroll's West-  which included Boo-Yah which I didn't care for and a double butter cheeseburger which blew Solly's in Milwaukee away. After checking out Lake Michigan in Pt Washington and enjoying a local Stevens Pt Amber and a bowl of beer cheese soup (it should be called Merkt cheese soup, I didn't taste any beer)  at The Chancery in Mequon, I am now at my hotel in downtown Milwaukee. I'll be spending all day tomorrow in Milwaukee and will join everyone on Saturday.
