The only thing missing is someone (ahem) representing the West Coast!  We had one in Cincinnati last year but nobody this year.

What are your plans in Milwaukee today?
I do have lunch plans, and I have somewhere to be from about 5.30 on, but I could join you for a frozen custard stop, or a very early dinner or something.
Let me know.

X1,
If this message is directed at wanderingjew (it took me a moment to figure it out), you might do better to PM him.  I don't know that he's actively checking this thread as he explores Milwaukee.

Looking forward to seeing you, Gyp, and ann peeples Saturday and Sunday.  If the rest of the weekend is as successful as last night's Welcome Dinner, this will be a tour for the ages!

Michael,
Ate breakfast this morning at my first Waffle House in Woodstock, GA. Wish I could be with all of you on the tour of my home town. Opening a new hot dog stand in Woodstock later this morning. Say hello to Chris, the owner of Poochie's in Skokie for me. My favorite at Poochies is a char cheddar Polish with grilled onions and a little mustard. The Polish is the king of the dogs in Chicago. It's larger and spiced a bit different than a hot dog. Highly recommended! Stay safe, eat well, and enjoy.

I'm a mentor?  I'm touched, but I don't know if I'm grown up enough to handle that kind of responsibility.  Even if it's true, the student surpassed the teacher long ago.  In fact, you've taught me a few things as well.  Like, "The early Roadfooder gets the best Doughnuts".

Of course, I quickly figured out that the smart mentor slips the early Roadfooder a ten-spot and has him pick up some doughnuts while I sleep in.

See you at Poochie's at 10:30am.

Man what a great trip so far! The food and the company has been great, especially those two Canucks that I've been driving around town. You couldn't ask for nicer or better traveling companions.

Then there is the traffic. Oh what horrible nasty traffic. As a lot of you know I grew up in California and drove frequently in San Francisco and Los Angeles. I never experienced traffic as bad as what I've had here in Chicago. Twice on Friday trucks we were already beside FORCED me to let them in. It was either slam on the brakes or they were going to run into the side of us. Nagle wouldn't have liked that since it was his side of the car.

Lisa I consider myself the West Coast representative. Since I am a native of California and a 41 year resident of that great state. Just because I now live in another state on the East Coast doesn't mean I have adopted it as my home state. GO 49'ers and SF Giants! I don't care what Hoffman says.

MikeS

I had fun playing with the Chi-heads in traffic. They gonna block my merge? Then watch the Cheesehead pull around 2 other attempted mergers and jump 8 cars ahead.

They look at me funny if I do that in NC. Here it earns respect and envy.

Tired.  Not hungry.  Seriously considering going to sleep before the sun goes down...

Hey Buddy, what's the restaurant on the north side of Oakton west of your street that has something like "smoked meats" either on the awning or above the front window?  Or at least that's what I think I saw...at this point hallucinations can't be ruled out.

It was a great day and I'm glad I got to meet Michael, lleechef, Chibears15, Ralph Melton, icecreamchick, and Mike S. as well as see Wanderingjew, joerogo (thanks for driving, Joe!), CNW, and buffetbuster again.  Lots of interesting stops (many without bathrooms, much to the delight of us all) and lots of good things to eat, too.  Like the butter garlic fries at Big Guy's...

It was great seeing everyone and meeting new faces. I count the BG Fries as the best thing I ate today (thanks, SC!), with the Pistachio Italian Ice second, and the Chargrilled Salami third. The rest is kind of a blur. See y'all tomorrow.

I loved everything I ate today.......from the char salami and fries, the minimalist dog, the lovely strawberry ice, the 12th St. Polish, everything at Freddies, etc.  It was just an awesome day!!!  Looking forward to my first taste of deep dish pizza at Burt's tomorrow.

What a great weekend!
Jen and I have had a wonderful time. We ate LOTS of great food and met some truly wonderful people. We can't thank Mike S enough for his generosity in offering to drive us around the city on this fantastic tour. We shared meals and lots of laughs over the last couple of days. Mike and the Canadians will be at another event as soon as we can.
Won't speak for Jen as she will be signing up at Roadfood under her own user name very soon, but some personal highlights for me were;
U Gazdy, Calumet Fisheries, Bang Bang Pies, Poochies and Freddy's.

Many thanks to Gregg and Jeff for bringing this event together. Much appreciated. You did a great job. Sorry we won't be at Burt's tomorrow, but that just gives us another reason to get back here for a visit some day.

Cheers

Not sure about any signs reading, "Smoked Meats," but there is a new Balkan restaurant, in that approximate location, that opened up last winter.  A big building with a faux stone exterior, looked a little like a castle?

On another note, for anyone who doesn't already know, here's Burt's address for Sunday:

Burt's Place
8541 N. Ferris
Morton Grove, IL  60053
(847) 965-1997

Please try to arrive between 11-11:15am.  Doors officially open at 11:15, Salad, Garlic Bread and Drinks served upon arrival, first round of Pizzas on the table at noon.  Sharp.

See you there,
Buddy

It was indeed a wonderful day! Great food, great people, great weather! Dale and I met here in the Milwaukee area Friday and had the best fish fry I have ever had. And all of Saturday's food was wonderful. I am noshing on my treats from Freddy's today-marinated salami, stuffed eggplant, olive mix and a marinated greek salad. Of course with some crusty Italian bread....
I am sorry I couldn't make it to Burt's-but I had to give Bob a little attention this weekend!!

Kudos to Buddy and CTD for some excellent food stops! Burt's as the finale was a great choice and while the pizza gets all the press the garlic bread and balsamic basil vinaigrette were quite tasty in their own right.  It's too bad not everyone could make it, but at least Dale and Danny got to see a good game at Wrigley Field.

The clock in the car read 1:16 when I pulled away from the curb in front of Burt's and 3:20 when I shut off the engine in the driveway.  Traffic was still pretty annoying until I got well out into the suburbs and then I-90 was pretty smooth sailing, even through the construction zones.

I think we're having frozen pizza for dinner tonight...

Kudos indeed to Buddy and Gregg!!  This was perhaps the best gathering I have ever attended......wonderful food at all stops and such a fun bunch of Roadfooders.  Took us about 6 hours to get home, thank God traffic around Chicago was relatively light.  We're having pulled pork, greens, beans and mac n cheese from City Barbeque which is 1 mile from the house........accompanied by Roadhouse Hot, Sweet and Tangy sauce.
