Michael,
Ate breakfast this morning at my first Waffle House in Woodstock, GA. Wish I could be with all of you on the tour of my home town. Opening a new hot dog stand in Woodstock later this morning. Say hello to Chris, the owner of Poochie's in Skokie for me. My favorite at Poochies is a char cheddar Polish with grilled onions and a little mustard. The Polish is the king of the dogs in Chicago. It's larger and spiced a bit different than a hot dog. Highly recommended! Stay safe, eat well, and enjoy.

CSD

Mark,

By the time we got to Poochie's Buddy had convinced me that the charred salami with the melted Merkt cheddar, mustard and grilled onions was the way to go. It was amazing. I had a 12th Street Polish at Big Guy's Sausage and loved it. I hope you enjoyed your Waffle House visit.

What a great time! Jeff, Greg -- WOW!

Tons of kudos to both of you. I cannot imagine a better introduction to Chicago stuff. And I have to say, for all my favorite naysayers, the pizza at Burt's blows away that other stuff that's advertised as Chicago pizza. It's just plain goooood. And I finally got to meet some great people I've been giving a hard time to during the past 15 years. And even a couple of Canadians. Holy Cow! Am I the last person to find out they speak our language? That's it for now. Dinner awaits. Like, I didn't get enough to eat since leaving Gahanna.

Thanks to all for the hard work that was put into the making of this tour. I had a good time and great food both Saturday and Sunday. Nice seeing everyone.
I was excited to shake Burt's hand which I did not get to do last time I was there. My pic of Bourdain's plaque did not turn out, though. Boohoo.
Thanks for the kind words, Uncle Groucho.

We too forgot that you were heading home early. Bobbi & I enjoyed meeting you. Perhaps a Montreal Smoked Beef & Poutine Tour will be in our futures.

Jim, funny you should say that. We may have stopped on the way home from the airport for a snack.

There were a few stubborn holdouts for the group photo.  Not pictured, Mrs. Roadhouse (seriously?), Pie Diva, and stricken_detective.  And yes, the ChickenBoy is correct, those are the nagles, both of whom, as Michael Hoffman observed above, in spite of their Canadian citizenship, spoke perfect English.  Who knew?

Trust me, it was stubbornness.  But if we're going to allow a cut on her thumb as a valid excuse for not being in the picture, I reckon we can give Pie Diva and stricken_detective a pass for their "Florence Nightingale" efforts in supporting the afflicted patient.

WOW
I cant wait to see the actual trip report from this wonderful adventure.  BRH  & CTD sounds like you really upped the ante, now I gotta figure out how to top your marathon of Chi town treats.

I would say Nashville but if CTD, BB & Myself go into Rotiers and need an extra table added for all the food, I couldnt imagine the size of banquet table we would need to fit the whole group in.

I wish I was there to enjoy it all with you, but health (sigh...)

Hey Chickenman - WJ and ChiBears got to see a RARE baseball feat during that game an infield homerun!!!!!!  wow what a comedy/tragedy of errors and to think the Brewers fired THEIR manager not the other way around!

MH - Thank you, I missed being there. I was looking forward to Burt's

It was not a good weekend here, my son has been off and on sick the past 6 weeks, mostly Spring Fever, but some truly sick days, Saturday morning it got bad enough he asked to go to the hosp.

All day of tests and his gall bladder was inflamed and full of stones. Surgeon said Monday we will get it out of there, they were hoping to do the surgery laproscopially but NO he is as hard headed as his father and they had to open in all the way up.

Removed the gall bladder which was twice its normal size, and red hot with inflamation and had 31 stones in it.

He now is resting uncomfortably, with a pain pump, the &%&$()% nurses keep coming in and waking him up, the last one seriously woke him up to give him a sedative!

The reports from Chicago already have my mind racing on next years event

Donald,
I was doing my best to keep up with your texts during Saturday's tour.  Very sorry to hear about your son's illness, but glad he's on the other side of it now.  Hope things continue to improve for both of you.

As for next year, several cities were batted around as contenders, but nothing settled.  My feeling is to leave it alone until after the "official" bus tour to Lafayette is completed in October, then open it up to discussion.  One of the things I learned from organizing this trip was, you can start too early with some things.  I would suggest however, that we agree to set aside the first weekend in May for these independent events.  It turned out perfectly in terms of timing (post-Easter, pre-Mothers' Day and graduation season), weather, and folks availability to attend.

I spent Monday in recovery from the weekend's hectic schedule.  I might start writing up some thoughts on the tour tomorrow.  Photos are available at Instagram accounts from ChiTownDiner, buffetbuster, and X1.  I'm hoping some folks will post pictures here on the main thread.

My flight didn't leave till this morning. I was home by around noon time.
I enjoyed meeting new folks and seeing old friends.
Yesterday CB15  met at Lou Malnati's for lunch in Lincoln Park and then walked to Wrigley Field and watched the Cubs lose to the Brewers. I'm not sure what happened but it appears the Cubs have to re-think their relief pitchers.  After the game, we went to Scooters Frozen Custard which was recommended by Travelin Man we then walked to Kuma's Too,   a heavy metal burger joint where  CB15 and I departed ways, but I stayed for dinner. I had "The Slayer" and barely tore into half of my my meal. After that I took the L back to Midway and drove to my hotel which was a couple of miles away.

Thanks to CTD and Buddy for setting this weekend up!

BRH - I think you are very correct about the first wknd in May.  2016 Easter is March 27, so you avoid all that hassle of Easter/Passover/Mardi Gras, Grad season is just getting started, Mother's day is 2 weeks away so all will have time to get back in their wives/mothers good graces.  The weather should be good by then, unless you are odd place that stil gets SNOW that time  of year.

The only down side to that weekend is that it could NEVER be in Louisville, KY.  I have been to the derby enough and even got to sample a $2500 Mint Julep (yes that figure does NOT have a decimal point) I did not get the glass though, and was a mint julep worth it.....

I would have rather have the woodford reserve double oaked and a splash of cool water in a glass instead.

Echoing what others have already said, it was obvious just how much time and effort were put into the planning by Buddy and CTD.  They both did a masterful job.  And thanks to Buddy for organizing the Burt's Place outing, which indeed lived up to it's reputation.  Still, the best of the best of the stops, to the surprise of no one, was Freddy's.

A special thanks to ChiTownDiner for carting my fat butt around all weekend.

They don't call it the windy city for nothing.
Incidentally on Friday night I stayed at a very interesting place in Westmont Il called The ChiTown Motel. Oddly enough it doubled as a beauty salon.

You say stubborn holdout. I say "Last one to sit down to eat and was still eating."
Tomayto. Tomahto. Someone can photoshop us in if they so desire. For those who weren't there: 3 gorgeous redheads staying out of the sun pretty much covers it.

I've been trying to upload pics to this thread and it won't let me. I have a Note 4. Will have to try from dropbox maybe.

Awesome awesome weekend. Thank you so much to the planners and to everyone who came and to the patient drivers who got us everywhere safely. **Extra Special Thanks to Irisarbor, X1, and abe_froeman, who know why.**
