I also wanted to thank annpeeples for generously bringing me a bag full of Valomilks, a candy that I really enjoy and can be difficult to find in this area.  I hope you don't mind Ann, but I shared them with the ladies in the office.  They were very happy!

Cliff,
I wish I had known you were a fan. I live a few miles from where they are made and know some of the Sifers family that owns it. I would have fixed you up.

I had made a remark in another thread about how much I enjoyed Valomilks and that they were difficult to find around here.  Immediately after, Ann brought some to Chicago, while I received several pms telling me where to get them at.  Roadfooders are the best!!!

There were a few stubborn holdouts for the group photo.  Not pictured, Mrs. Roadhouse (seriously?), Pie Diva, and stricken_detective.  And yes, the ChickenBoy is correct, those are the nagles, both of whom, as Michael Hoffman observed above, in spite of their Canadian citizenship, spoke perfect English.  Who knew?

Buddy

English? From Mr. Nagle?? You should've heard the French I kept hearing while we were on the freeway. I learned several new French phrases that weekend.

I had a great holiday. Old friends, New friends and great food. What more could a guy ask for? Well the exceptional planning was a big plus.

It was great to put faces to names that I had seen on here for a long time. Thanks to everyone for helping to make such a great trip.

😂😱. I find that French is much more colourful and flows better when stuck in traffic with pushy drivers all around. Brings out the Montrealer in me. Many thanks to Mike S. for getting past all that and getting Jen and I to all stops safely.

The Chicago River? Sure. They can feed us invader Asian carp.

Actually, the Chicago River cruises are a sight to behold.  You'll get a new perspective of the city's grand tradition of cutting edge architecture through the last century as you glide downstream.  Some cruises stick to the river while others make for the open waters of Lake Michigan, providing you with a breathtaking view of the skyline.

You don't even need to worry about Asian Carp as they are still a fair distance downstream in the Illinois River, around Havana, Illinois, a solid 80-100 miles south of Chicago.

BTW, word is, they're pretty tasty.

Mr. Maki and I did the Chicago Architecture Foundation's cruise for our first anniversary...almost 4 years ago...even though it was a rainy, foggy, miserable day, it was still a great tour.  I highly recommend them (not the cheesy ones done by other companies, though!) for anyone visiting and even for natives.

Just remembered that I did in fact take a few pictures with my phone. Realize they are not the best quality but will post anyway.

Smoker at Calumet Fisheries

Of course we needed more food after U-Gazdy, so we made our way to Superdawg. Buddy, help me out here. What are the names of these two on top of the building?

Friday's dinner destination.

My char grilled salami at Poochie's. Really enjoyed it.

Will see if Jen took any pictures. We were usually too busy eating and watching other people taking pictures.

That's Maurie and Flaurie, named after Superdawg's husband and wife founders.

Glad you folks had fun!  We really enjoyed having you.  Hope it'll become a regular thing.

Since there's more than 1 way to skin a cat...

My Saturday morning started with a short walk north on IL-83 to T-Bob's Smoked Bar-B-Q in Des Plaines.  T-Bob's is open for breakfast which fit perfectly into the day's schedule.

This is the breakfast sandwich made with eggs, optional fried jalapeno bits, cheese, and brisket on a French roll.  Good stuff and a great alternative to a hotel or fast food breakfast; the brisket (which T-Bob's always slices except for a small snack-size sandwich) had a mild smoke flavor and the "morning sauce" was tangy and not too sweet.

From there it was off to stop #1: Poochie's in Skokie.  If I'd paid closer attention to the itinerary I would've driven my orange Pinto wagon...

"I came all the way from Pennsylvania for this???"

The hands of Joerogo, the hot dog of Poochie's.

Char hot dog with mustard and extra pickle.

Char salami, a big hit with the group.

I don't understand the apparent Chicago obsession with Merkt's cheese spread.  Yes, it's great cold on crackers but this whole business of putting it warm on hot dogs, burgers, and fries....I know a lot of people like it but it just ain't my bag.  I'm pretty sure the congealed leftovers from this order were used in a drive-by bludgeoning later in the evening.

Stops 2 and 3 were Rand Red Hots in Des Plaines and Bob-O's Hot Dogs in Chicago.  Joe's scenic route had us arriving at RRH about the time everyone was finishing, but skipping a meal turned out to be a good thing.

Then it was on to Bob-O's for more hot dogs and beef.  By this time the day was quite sunny and getting quite comfortable, so quite a few chose to eat outside.

Fortunately Lleechef was able to intervene just before Buddy suffered serious harm at the hands of Wanderingjew, who'd just found out that Bob-O's has no public restroom.

Chicago Italian beef is good by itself but it becomes twice as good in a beef & sausage combo.

Unfortunately the Thursday night Polish feast and Friday activities took their toll on those with lesser constitutions, like this delicate flower who opted for a nap instead of another meal.  But despair not...a short time later he was fit as a fiddle and raring to go!

After Bob-O's we headed to Johnnie's in Elmwood Park.  The line was out the door but actually moved pretty well.

Some had beef, some had ice, some had both.

As Johnnie's was yet another bladder-clench stop, Joerogo and I walked a block or so west to the Marathon station to make a now-I-don't-feel-guilty-about-using-the-facilities purchase.  Parked on the street was this '65 Chevy; it's either a genuine SS or a darn good tribute, and even has 396 Turbo-Jet callouts.  Sweet.

Saturday's next-to-last stop was Big Guys in Ber-wyn.

Here's CTD digging for those last bits of tofu and hummus.

I think this was Ralph Melton's.

And one from Buffetbuster.  Or maybe these 2 are the other way around?

Garlic butter fries.  So good.  So really, really good...

The bacon cheddar brat that tried to kill X1.

And my corn dog.  Made with batter and not breading, it was pretty much the best I've ever had outside of a county fair (which is an unfair comparison anyway).

Saturday wrapped up with a visit to Freddy's in Cicero, a surprising oasis in what initially appeared to be a forest of suburban neighborhood homes.  For some reason I neglected to get a shot of the exterior, but Freddy's does have...food.

Wait...something is missing.  Is this not, after all, an expedition in search of Italian beef sandwiches?  If only someone would step up and demand that this error be rectified forthwith!

One hot, one sweet, both great.
