Good pics.

Thanks!  It was a great time, that's for sure.

My initial plan for Sunday was to head home but relentless peer pressure caused me to cave in and go to Burt's Place for pizza.

Burt has a lot of neat old radio and stereo gear on shelves throughout the restaurant; this shot shows but a small subset.

We were there for pizza but Grandma Buddy made sure we started with a nice salad, because eating healthy is important.  Burt also makes a really good garlic bread, which goes great with the balsamic basil salad dressing (not shown).

On to the main event!

If I didn't take this photo Mrs. Chicken would've never believed that I voluntarily ate pizza that was topped with spinach.  And it's too bad that Wanderingjew couldn't be there, as I'm sure he would've loved the IHOP tableware.

So many pepperoni pizzas are overly greasy...not Burt's.

Go elsewhere if you want black-tie waiter service.  In Morton Grove you take what you can get.  (MikeS, I'm sorry I didn't give you a heads-up when I took this...has the retina burn cleared up yet?)

Everything was very good (Joerogo describes Burt's pizza as "balanced" and I think that's an excellent assessment) but my favorite isn't Burt's pizza...it's the inch or so of crust around the edge of Burt's pizza!  Seriously, I'd order a pizza and have the center cut out just to eat the outer perimeter.

Burt's was a great way to wrap up the weekend and I'm glad I adjusted my plans to stay.  Big, big thanks to Buddy and ChiTownDiner for their efforts in making everything come together and to all those who participated as well...weekends like this don't just fall into place by themselves.  But next time, think more toilets and less traffic.

Burt's was truly a wonderful experience and I'm not a fan of pizza!  Thanks, Buddy for making this happen!  I have a couple of weird  pictures to add.
This most unusual sign just down the street from Freddie's.  Is there a designated parking spot for gangs?

Burt's phone.  Yes, he really uses this every day.

And the pizza, garlic bread and salad were all outstanding!!

As Johnnie's was yet another bladder-clench stop, Joerogo and I walked a block or so west to the Marathon station to make a now-I-don't-feel-guilty-about-using-the-facilities purchase.  Parked on the street was this '65 Chevy; it's either a genuine SS or a darn good tribute, and even has 396 Turbo-Jet callouts.  Sweet.

My grandfather had a blue super sport with a big engine and the shift between to the two front bucket seats. His was an automatic transmission--I think the first he'd ever owned. It was a very cool car. In the 60s in Texas you could get your driver's license at age 14, and Grandpa let me drive the car!! He drove it from Maine to Texas and back. Compared to my family's two bench seat Fords, the Chevy SS felt like driving a big powerful beast. A fun one!!

Of course we needed more food after U-Gazdy, so we made our way to Superdawg. Buddy, help me out here. What are the names of these two on top of the building?

That's Morrie and Florrie, named after Superdawg's husband and wife founders.

Glad you folks had fun!  We really enjoyed having you.  Hope it'll become a regular thing.

Buddy

EDIT: Chicago is mourning the passing of Maurie Berman, the founder of Superdawg.  Berman founded the iconic Hot Dog Stand in 1948 along with his wife Flaurie.  He died Sunday morning from heart problems.
Maurie Berman was 89.

Given Cicero's legendary history, I wonder if that ordinance dates back to the 1930s!

I don't know how much he lived in Cicero but he did conduct business there, and the 4800 block of Cermak Road isn't all that far from Freddy's.

With Michael Hoffman "taking care of it", I'm not sure if it will actually be Air Canada, Pittsburgh Police department or Customs and Immigration encouraging me to stay as long as I like.

Yesterday MH said to me, "When are you going to post the rest of the Chicago pictures?"  I said, "What pictures?  I think that thread is pretty much done."  "Well, you didn't post the picture of my biscuit!!!!"  Sheesh.  Alright, already, here's the picture of Michael's sausage and egg biscuit from Bang Bang Pie Shop.  I'll let him describe it.

Let's see...biscuit, egg, sausage patty, cheese.

Is there a crumpled McDonald's wrapper off to the side?

First, it was a really great biscuit -- one of the best I've ever had. But then it took off. The sausage was out-of-this-universe delicious, and the egg was perfectly cooked. C'mon. Who'd have thought you could get a sausage and egg biscuit this outstanding in a pie shop? And especially in a pie shop in a city where the Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs and White Sox operate.

While I can't confirm it, I'm told they did have pies. But that sausage and egg biscuit was ambrosial.

Bang Bang Pie Shop had a whole list of savory biscuit sandwiches.  I went with the Key lime pie.  It was good.  I had a taste of MH's biscuit and it was definitely the better item of the two!
