The Official Cleveland Or Bust 2020 Crawl Thread

Jeff has said he is taking a major step back, so I will attempt to pick up some slack. I can't even imagine the hours he must've put in to make these run so smoothly, so any other assistance anyone else wants to offer up, please reach out to me.

Especially with him stepping into an advisory role, I think it's more important than ever to begin organizing early, and right now is the ideal time to plan since the events of MSP are still relatively fresh in our heads.

The first thing we need to do is pick a city. It's paramount we do this before we pick the date, because we need to research the goings-on at each location so we don't end up showing up where they're hosting a huge event, like a Milli Vanilli reunion.

So what are our candidates? I will start a master list and add on everyone else's candidates.

Going from memory of last year's rejected choices:

Cleveland
Louisville
Montréal
St. Louis
Detroit
Austin
Savannah
Charleston
Augusta (Ga.)
Pittston
New Orleans
Milwaukee

Edit: Forgot Milwaukee.

Not sure how the voting is going to work, but my top three are:

1.) New Orleans (walkable and plenty of street cars; epic restaurants)

2.) Charleston

3.) Detroit (seriously!)

Just to make sure credit is given where credit is due:

The Cincinnati Chili Crawl, which kicked off the idea for an annual Crawl, was entirely the brainstorm of CajunKing with relief pitcher ChiTownDiner saving the game at the last minute when CK became ill.

While I initiated The Great ChicagoStyleHotDog & ItalianBeef Crawl, once again, it wouldn't have been possible without the equal co-chairmanship of CTD.

The Pittsburgh Crawl was all Ralph Melton and icecreamchick (Lori Melton), with input from buffetbuster and lleechef.  I was just there to enjoy their excellent efforts, just like everyone else.

Kansas City was a joint effort between myself and CNW.

Nashville was spearheaded by Davidsanders, then edited and organized by CTD.  I just came in at the end and dotted a few "eyes" and crossed some "tees".

Even Minneapolis/St. Paul was a group effort.  Local Roadfooders rumaki, Ahi Mpls., & Davydd all provided invaluable input, along with frequent MSP visitors wanderingjew & buffetbuster.  Part time MSP resident saps also added solid recommendations and advice.

So make no mistake, none of these Crawls have been achieved solely with the efforts of one person.  All of them require additional help and input, even when it seems really annoying and counterproductive.  Just something to remember for whoever picks up the mantle of the 2020 Crawl.

My thought is we're just going to compile a list first, then we'll all pick five and cut the field to five.

New Orleans added.

Here's a novel idea......instead of building the Crawl around a town, we start with a street and build from there!

The idea of starting with a street and building out from there to choose the crawl town is terrific. I think it is proper to start this strategy off with N. and S. Main Street in Pittston Pa.

I too like the idea of starting with a street and working out from there. Let's pick a street furthest from downtown Cleveland. How about somewhere in San Diego? Maybe Duval Street in Key West?

Something to keep in mind as this topic develops.  As Bonk mentioned, I'll be taking a breather from organizing next year's Crawl.  Doesn't really matter much.  Of the 10 (serious) proposed cities I'd only be able to contribute significantly to two (Cleveland & Detroit), and could only offer solid suggestions, with little actual experience, for two more (St. Louis & New Orleans).  The other six are more or less unknown to me (spent a couple of days in Montréal more than 50 years ago, so I'm not likely to be of much use there).  As such, someone else will need to step up and volunteer to spearhead the planning.

It might be a good idea to hear from those folks who think they'd like to tackle the project.  It might even sway where we end up going.  I mean, it's gonna be tough to vote for a city if no one is familiar enough with it, or willing to put in the time, to make arrangements.

So who's gonna be the next Crawl maven?  I'm envisioning a ChiBears15/Davidsanders/chickenplucker joint production for one or more of the Southern Cities listed.  Or maybe a ScreamingChicken led romp across St. Louis.

I think Keith and Danny and I would probably be able to arrange a Crawl in the south, Charleston, Savannah, or Augusta, if that's where the group votes to go. Keith has the most experience and knowledge of the area, and would hopefully take the lead. Just today he mentioned 8 places in the Charleston area that I hadn't heard of and several more that I know of but haven't managed to get to yet. Cliff also has quite a bit of experience in Charleston, and Gregg and you, Jeff, will be able to help put the finishing touches on it, with the spreadsheet and the common sense of how to organize a Crawl.

I just finished posting my trip report from last month that included three days in Charleston, most of them with Keith having joined me. Here's the link: http://forums.roadfood.com/May-2019-Florida-Georgia-South-Carolina-and-North-Carolina-Trip-m882811.aspx. I started the trip in Florida on May 20th and arrived in Charleston on May 27th.

Charleston and Savannah are two of the great cities of the US, and both would make great Crawls. But it's up to the group to vote.

I guess we can start narrowing the field. Why don't we take it down to five first.

How about everyone PM me their top three choices. That will take Doodle tomfooleries out of play. I'll keep the results totally private until the end so there's no ballot stuffing opportunity.

Just so everyone has a chance to view this thread and download, I'll give everyone until next Sunday night, June 23.

With that said, here are my thoughts on my favorite candidates:

Cleveland - I've been there several times, and this city would make an awesome crawl. The West Side Market is incredible, and there is a lot of good Eastern Euro cuisine here. Plus there's wineries and a potential Amish day trip option. I also have foodie contacts here, who would help and tag along. This is my top choice, and yes, geography does help sway my vote.

Louisville - Danny threw this out last year and I sort of dismissed it, but there's a lot of great food here. I know several people here as well who could help us fill up a weekend schedule. Just don't pick Derby weekend.

Montréal - Yeah, this isn't going to gain momentum, but it should. This is an amazing food city everyone should visit. Lots of unique stuff too, like real poutine and smoked meats. Plus it's a beautiful, old city with tons to do. Nagle and Wawa are from there and could advise as well.

St. Louis - It's another city that has great Q, which rates highly in my book, and there are a lot of other great types of food as well.

Austin - Come on, it's the brisket capital of the world. Not sure why there's not much interest. If we're going to do a long trip back south, this city gets my vote.

Milwaukee - I forgot to add this to the original list, but this is a city with a great culinary reputation and one I've always wanted to explore thoroughly. We could do worse than s cheese curds and sausage crawl.

If we're leaning toward any of the Southern options, we might also keep in mind how that will affect when we go.  We should consider moving up the Crawl into early April of even late March to avoid excessive heat and humidity.

John, sounds good to me.  I sent you my top 3.  Thanks for putting this thread together.

Lets have some fun with the voting and not take this too seriously.  I hope my votes don't end up offending that one particular person with all of that Roadfood street cred...

Danny

P.S. Jeff, if Cleveland wins will you consider coming out of retirement for the planning portion?  Kinda like Jordan returning to the Wizards.  He was past his prime but the love he had for the game made him come back.

First of all, I'm not retiring, just taking a break.  Second, I'm happy to help, in an advisory role, anyone who is willing to do the main heavy lifting.  OTOH, that "past his prime" crap might have just cost you my services.

Top 5 choices for 2020!!!

#1 - Pittston!

Then, my top two places that I've never been to.

Montreal - Due mainly to CTD's recent postings on the Facebook.

St Louis - Thinking I may be able to get great Q and Italian on the same tour!

And my top two spots for a return visit.

NOLA

Charleston

That's my list and I'm sticking to it......unless somebody mentions a return to KC.  I'd go back there in a heartbeat!
