I think doing it that way gives the people who vote later too much influence because they can see the tally and make their selection(s) accordingly or play the "get out the vote" card and persuade people to vote their way to sway the outcome.

I wasn't happy with the figurative ballot box stuffing just under the wire for 2019.

I don't mind the politicking, but I do mind when people vote for a particular location and then end up not going. I think that only those who went on last years trip should be able to vote on next years location. I have always thought that we should discuss it on Saturday night and make the decision then and there.

I don’t think that’s fair in the least, especially since the voting is done before the dates are set. And deciding the Saturday before would make finding hotels and making plane reservations, if necessary, extremely difficult.

I'm sorry. Let me clarify. I mean that we vote essentially a year in advance. We decide on the last night of the crawl where we are going next year. We can also decide the date at the same time. I realize that it is very early, but my frustration is that the last couple of years our destination was decided by votes from people who didn't show up.

EDIT: Looks like we were posting at the same time.

I think CNW means we should've taken the vote on the Saturday night of the 2019 Crawl to decide the 2020 destination.  I guess for future Crawls it's worth discussing at that time; maybe to propose a list of candidates.  But restricting the final vote only to folks who are present that night isn't necessarily the best course of action.  I do agree you should only vote if there's a strong likelihood you'll attend, but I also understand real life can force folks to change their plans.

EDIT AGAIN: Also, that method doesn't really solve your problem, because who's to say if every one there will actually attend the following year.  We had several folks in Nashville who didn't make it to Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Re: The Official 2020 All-Encompassing Food Crawl Thread Sponsored by Taco Bell 2019/07/18 19:45:06 (permalink)
While we await Bonk opening the final round of voting, I thought I'd chime in with a few thoughts; mostly a reiteration of things I've said upthread, but worth considering as we decide our destination.

With three finalists in the Deep South (Charleston, Savannah, and NOLA), we should strongly consider moving up the dates if one of them wins.  Those places get brutally hot and humid the closer we get to summer; even early May might be problematic.  Late March or very early April look like our best bets.  Of course, there's also a trade-off with heavier rain during that period.

Taking into account both factors, March looks like our best bet for New Orleans, while April looks like the best time to hit Charleston or Savannah.  Even St. Louis gets famously hot and muggy starting in late spring, and would be best visited in late March.

Along with the date consideration, it should be noted that Good Friday and Easter fall on April 10th and 12th respectively.  So if we follow through with an earlier date, we could potentially be visiting during Lent.  Not sure if that makes a difference for anyone, but now you can make an informed decision.  We might also face closures of some places on Good Friday.

Another issue that might influence the vote is knowing who will actually handle the planning.  I'll make myself available for general counsel and advice, but as stated before, I plan to take a secondary to non-existent role next year.  It would be nice to hear from anyone willing to grab the reins, and know which city they feel most comfortable tackling.  It's a fool's game to choose a destination without knowing in advance who will be in charge.

Finally, there's the issue of getting around.  I have personal experience in NOLA, and know several Roadfooders who are familiar with Charleston.  Both cities offer great eating opportunities, but both present mobility challenges for a large group of folks caravanning around town.  Nothing insurmountable, mind you, but we won't necessarily have the quick ins and outs, and relatively easy parking, we've become accustomed to in other cities.

Those are my main concerns for now.  I hope others will chime in with their thoughts, positive and negative, before we settle on a final Crawl destination.

Good points, Jeff. Both David Sanders and Keith have a ton of experience with Savannah and Charleston. I have been to Charleston once on an eating trip last year, so I would definitely help as well. Moving around both cities would be more difficult than previous cities we have visited. A combination of carpooling and walking could make things a bit easier.

I'm sure John would gladly take the lead role in Cleveland. He has local contacts there and I am sure you would be a big help too.

I have a bunch of ideas for St. Louis. Lots of Roadfooders on here have been there numerous times.

NOLA may need to be a group effort. Carpooling, walking and street cars would help with the traffic issues.

Just some thoughts...

No offense to David and Keith, but the only Crawl worth attending is one planned by ChiBears15. All that time in the Beefcake inhaling CTD's knowledge and other discharges has to be good for something.

I agree. I'm going to send Danny a resume and references, and hopefully he'll take me on as his assistant.

I've also been a bit worried about how getting around in Charleston would work. There may be a few places that have issues, but there are quite a number of places that I've been to and would recommend for a crawl that are not directly in the major downtown areas. And just like Nashville, which certainly had some parking issues, some advance planning will definitely need to be done. Many of the places in Charleston would be a 5-10 minute drive, and those probably wouldn't have much of issue with parking. There will be an issue for some of them when a large crowd tries to get in. But that was true in Nashville as well.

I think Jeff is right about going a little earlier to the southern destinations. When I was in Charleston last May it was about 95-99 degrees for the three days I was there.

Mrs. Bonk had an idea for final voting that I like.

Pick a primary city and a backup. Two points for your first choice, one for the second.

I still don't like the vote-skewing potential of a fully public vote, so if you want to vote on this thread, fine, if you want to PM me, even better.

Looking at the calendar, why don't we wrap this up on July 31.

Hi John,

Thanks for taking this on. I'm not worried about public voting, and since I really don't like the Roadfood PM system of limited messages, my primary vote is for Charleston and my backup vote is for St. Louis. I'm hoping I'll be able to get the week off, wherever we wind up going.

PM on it’s way. For those who may need to book vacation ASAP, I would like to suggest a deadline of next Saturday, July 27. One full week of voting. Then get the date poll going right away. Just a suggestion of course. I appreciate you taking this on Bonk.
