The South's Top 50 BBQ Joints Of 2019 (Southern Living)

Now here is a list that will get your mouth to waterin'! The editors at Southern Living went out and ate a lot of 'cue to, once again, give us the top 50 BBQ joints in the south. This list has a whole lot of Roadfood favourites on it and makes for a good list for those of us who'd like to hit up some top rate 'cue in our travels. #1 was a surprise, for me, but I'd really like to try it someday!

I feel your pain. As a former resident of Virginia myself, I can tell you that it was always really hard to find good 'cue there. And what you did find was really not on par with the 'cue from other states ( I first moved to VA from Memphis, so they had big shoes to fill and never did get the job done). The only decent 'cue I ever really had there back in the day, was at the now long gone Dixie Pig that was at the top of Beacon Hill in Alexandria. I'm guessing the Southern Living crew searched and never found a place worthy of a top 50 spot. I know the last time I tried to find some good 'cue in Charlottesville I left severely disappointed. VA is just not a state I have ever thought of as a BBQ Belt state.

I thought the biscuits and the barbecue at Ace Biscuits in Charlottesville was fantastic. While I appreciate Robert Moss’s list, my first question (and I sent him a personal message on Instagram to ask) was why wasn’t Payne’s on the list, especially when some of those others in Memphis are. I’ve been to 24 of the places, and I think there are maybe 10 of those that I didn’t find to be particularly special.

Bar-B-Que Shop in Memphis has some of the worst barbecue I've ever eaten in a restaurant.

And Texas is not the South, but if you do head to the American southwestern city of Lockhart Texas please don't waste your money at Kreuz Market. It hasn't been good since they moved into their new building in 1999.

Have you ever walked into a restaurant that seated 700 people and had world class food?

Dreamland in Tuscaloosa has been a sad joke for eons. Not sure how it made the list.

When George retired from the pit at Archibald's in Northport, Alabama the quality plummeted. I saw it coming when the kids who took the restaurant over added beans, slaw and banana pudding. You can still get decent barbecue there but it's nowhere near as good as it was when the old master was on the pit.

My mother's family is from Hazard, KY and they could not possibly be more Southern.

I was just wondering whether Southern Living’s definition of the South was too constrictive or too loose or just right, Goldilocks style.
I’m in the loose camp, including Missouri, I suppose, since my relatives are pretty Southern too, at least I think so.

Kentucky's pretty southern. I can see it being called the South. Up to about Berea anyway. I get why they wrongly call Texas "The South" they want the markets of Austin, Dallas, and Houston to buy their magazine. It's a money grab.

We did bypass Kreuz Market in favor of Smitty's. While Smitty's barbecue is merely very good (as opposed to great, which is what I'd call Louie Mueller), as far as atmosphere goes, I don't think I've ever been in a more classic barbecue joint; from the fire on the floor next to the smoker in the meat-serving area to that wonderful, very old-looking dining room/store.

Texas is not the South ...

So very, intensely true.
And neither is Florida.

Edit:  As some question the fact, let me assure them that Kentucky is, indeed, "Southern".

And your basis for this definitive view comes from your Pittsburgh upbringing, or your suburban Virginia outlook?

Well, yes.
That, education, travel, work, and living in Texas for the past 14 years.

I now live in FL & my opinion is that FL in not in the "South", unless you're in its panhandle.
