The post no one wants to write, Gregg Pill has passed away

I heard this morning that our friend ChiTownDiner has passed away. No details or circumstances have been revealed, but I believe it occurred while Gregg was doing what he loved best, while on a RoadTrip in Canada. My deepest condolences to Patty and his family.

And the post no one wants to read.

Even though I never met Gregg I have heard so many wonderful anecdotes involving him from BB that I felt I almost knew him.  And I was so looking forward to meeting him.

I guess now that meeting him will have to wait a bit, but my plan has not changed.

This is such incredibly sad news. I only met him a little over two years ago, just before the Roadfood Crawl in Kansas City, but I felt like I've known him for decades. A very warm, larger than life personality, he will be and is greatly missed.

I just woke up an hour ago to numerous posts on FB about Gregg's passing and I'm in utter shock.  Patti, our hearts go out to you and your sons.  We are thinking of you. My wife and I met Gregg & Patti in 2013 in New Mexico while attending Chris & Amy Ayers' wedding.  From that first dinner (and MANY pies!) at Harry's Roadhouse, I knew we'd be friends.  From dining "a la trunk" during a great RF weekend in Pittsburgh, to sharing a perfect steak at Peter Luger's in Brooklyn and a wonderful dinner and great conversation with he & Patti at Frontera Grill in Chicago last summer, Gregg's passion for food, life and enjoying each moment really rubbed off on me.  You were one of the best Gregg and I consider myself lucky to have known and broken bread (especially Firecakes donuts!) with you.  Rest easy, my friend.

I am so sorry to hear this.  I met Gregg at Al's  during the Minneapolis/St. Paul Crawl, and he couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming to me, a virtual stranger to the group.

What a generous guy.  He will be missed.

There's a knot in my stomach, a hole in my heart, and my mind is in a swirling fog.  I haven't got much else right now, but hope to write something worthy of my dear friend in the coming days.

Oh, how he will be missed.

He was one of the people on my fairly short list of internet friends I'd like to meet in person one day. My heart goes out to his family and those of you who knew him well, and I hope he's already found those who have gone before him and they're happily eating better Roadfood than any of us will ever find until we meet them again.

Absolutely tragic.  Such a loss to Roadfood, whether you knew him or not.  A loss to his community of Westmont (I feel like there was a whole economy centered around him championing food in his area) and mostly a loss to his close friends and family.  He is remembered as being kind, generous, and warm to everyone he met, and a great sense of humor.

When he was undergoing cancer treatment a decade or so ago, and was unable to attend a Contingent outing that included Hot Doug's, someone worked some magic and got that day's "Celebrity Sausage" named after him.  Photo courtesy of MilwFoodlovers:

In the paraphrased words of Warren Zevon, speaking of his own mortality, "Enjoy every sandwich."  Gregg truly did.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gregg in Memphis back in the fall of 2013 the night before one of the Michael Stern led bus trips.  We instantly became friends and we would end up traveling together on numerous trips in the next few years.  I heard the awful news this morning and even now I am still devastated.

He had the best sense of humor out of anyone I have ever met. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Patty and sons Michael and James.  Gregg, you will be forever missed but never forgotten.

Here are some recent photos of Gregg with our group just doing what we do best: eating, joking, and just enjoying each others' company.  If I don't post these pictures right, he will be making fun of me from heaven.

I am absolutely stunned.  Gregg was so much fun on roadfood excursions, and he made reading the forums a blast.  He was smart, funny and so generous in every way.  And that smile!  He was also the spreadsheet KING!  He will be sorely missed; I just cannot believe he is gone.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

To say that Gregg made the most of a second chance at life would be an understatement of considerable proportion.  Even so, he still got shortchanged.

Like all of you I was stunned when I heard of Gregg's passing.  While I've only known him a few short years he was one of those people who just drew you in with his warmth and humor and always made you smile.  I can just imagine him standing next to Saint Peter at the pearly gates and showing off his spreadsheet.

I had a friend named Gregg,
No truer friend you'll find,
He'd always share his food with you,
He was gentle and he was kind.
Now he's on a food tour,
To where we do not know,
And with his passing through our lives,
He's helped us all to grow.

Love and miss you my Roadfood brother.

Gregg was the type of person that left you feeling very fortunate to have met. We interacted a lot online, but I was lucky enough to have a chance to meet him and his wonderful wife in real life when they visited my area for a wedding back in 2016. I took them to a local favorite where we ordered more food than I had ever ordered there before and had a long lunch full of wonderful conversation. He was such a warm, generous, and genuine person. He will be missed by so many.

My condolences to his family. I hope good memories offer you comfort. Please know Gregg will live in the memories of many, many people forever.

I first met Gregg on the Cincinnati Crawl in 2014. I admit that I was a little anxious before the tour got underway because I was the new guy. Kind of like your first day at a new school. I knew that many of you had already met each other on the Official Crawls, and I wondered how I was going to fit in. I didn't need to be concerned as I quickly realized that Gregg had never met a stranger in his life and he introduced me to everyone in his party. Gregg in many ways was the life of the party on our tours. He spent a lot of time researching and putting together his spreadsheet so that we could have a good time. My condolences to his family. Rest in Peace.
