I used to go there with my brothers and sisters on our way to ST Ann's on Sunday. I still remember the taste I was sorry to see it go almost as sorry as the Texas weiner joint on Hutton and Central.

Someone mentioned that a Goodyear is @ that location now. I know there are plenty of used card lots on that strip...but I never noticed a Goodyear.

I'll drive that way to see what I see when heading to the Holland Tunnel on Tuesday.

Mister S & Tippy's were not too far apart in distance!

I lived on Columbia Ave in the middle to late 50's on Friday night if I wanted to see my girlfriend I had to go to bingo at St. Ann's and after that we went to Tippy's. I used to hang out at the Ritz pool hall on Central Ave, and Charles Street..

My father told me there were sharks living under that ice. Learn to skate quick or be a snack.

The rink was wooden floor and you skated to the music of a loud organ.

It was an ice rink in the 70s (I'm a youngster in Roadfood years) & now it's a plumbing supply showroom.

My parents remember the roller rink & skated there before the sharks moved in.

Between 1956 and 1959 to get to the Roller Rink we had to take a bus from Jersey City Heights to Journal Square and then another bus to Bayonne. And without a cell phone.

I loved the old Jersey City buses!

My Grandmother didn't drive so when she would take me to Canton on Journal Square we would take the Broadway bus & then catch an old-school Bergen Ave. bus (we'd wait for an old cute bus if there was a newer circa-70s bus leaving first).

The Bergen Ave. line was orange...and the old buses were adorable.

Which buses did you take to get to City Line?

I believe they were both the new ones, when I lived in Hoboken I took the orange #5 to Journal Square.

I miss Canton. Just saying today how I can't find any Chinese restaurant with spare ribs as good as were served at Canton. Same with the Old School chow mein and roast pork fried rice.

If I could have a wish for one restaurant to be back...it would be Canton.

I was always in awe of the atmosphere...& the waiters used to bring me a "wink wink" ( from my Nanny) Mai Tai when I was little.

My dad was a fast food bigot. So we typically ended up at a place just across the street on Kennedy about a block and a half north from Tippys for great steak, but cannot remember the name. However on the rare occasion, I was allowed Tippys & Arthur Treacher's. Don't know if they are even around these days. Tippys was typically a tree for after a bad haircut session. Long since left Jersey & my memories of growing up on Carlton Avenue & Sherman place just off Kennedy. Went to St. Nick's.

Hi Tom--I'm pretty sure we went to St. Nicks together, class of 76. if you are that guy, we rode the Central Ave bus to get Arthur Treachers at the transfer station when they first opened.  The restaurant you referenced was the Plankboard Inn. It too has sadly closed.  it is now a laundromat.

That's it… the Plankboard Inn. I remembered it immediately and can see the sign hanging there on the corner with the side entry & white aluminum siding. Class of 76, right again. I had to think for a minute. We moved to Wyckoff right after where I went to middle school (Bergen County?) You definitely know me somehow but I can't remember. Definitely everything is changed since then. I've got a tough one for you. Maybe it was Bergenline Park, can't remember but all the way up Central Ave., North Jersey City/Union City? And if you were to cut down for the right/east past the ballfields in question you would end up at either the entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel or access directly to Hoboken from the West?? Anyway, remember the ancient white Sabrett hotdog truck with the orange drink & lemon ice that was there forever and the only one around the fields? Up until I went vegan several years back had Super Bowl parties here annually with 5 pounds of the hotdogs, grilled onions, and the burgers. Hard to find them and very expensive shipping these days. I remember Suzanne Kelsch and wonder if the family bakery is still there north of the A&P across from the old library? We moved after Don Bosco high school in Ramsey to Morris County/Mendham where I went to college in Madison/Drew University. Dropped out after sophomore year and joined the Air Force moving west to Cheyenne Wyoming; what a culture shift! Have been living in Seattle these last 25 years since then. Never did graduated college but will have numerous certificates after about 5/10 attempts and AA later. Managed a reasonably lucrative career without though.

    Hi Tom,

Sorry I didnt get back to you sooner, but I do not come up here too often.  The park was Washington Park.  I think the hot dog cart is still there, run by the original owner's son.  Koelsch's bakery and all of the other bakeries are long gone, unfortunately.  If you are on Facebook, we have a St Nicks class of 76 group set up.  I am sure everyone would love to see you on there.  JC to Seattle--man thats a long haul!  Stay well!

Hey Washington Park was just a few blocks from where I grew up in Union City in the 50's. Don't remember a hot dog cart then......but if I went there today, I'd get that lemon ice you talked about. Can't find a substitute for what I remember as a kid!!
