Re: Tragedy Strikes KC: Stroud's Is Closed!
My takeaway from the article is that the Oak Ridge Manor location is the only one left under "original" management, whatever that means; certainly not the folks who started the first location at 85th & Troost back in 1933. The Overland Park location seems to be part of the KC Hopps, Ltd. partnership. IIRC, the Wichita franchise was always a separate operation.
And yeah, the title might be a bit hyperbolic, but there is cause for concern, IMO. As the article states, this is the third Stroud's location to shut down in the last three years. I think the key paragraph in the article was this:
MREM issued this statement: “Contrary to the notice that (KC Hopps president) Ed Nelson put out – Stroud’s chose to shut down operations despite having a contractual lease obligation though March 2022. Landlord is pursuing KC Hopps for back rent owed and future lease obligations correspondingly. There is no truth to Stroud’s being shut down due to ‘development’ and the referenced ‘needed repairs’ are a direct result of tenant’s unwillingness, or inability, to make the necessary investment in its premises.”
That "back rent" comment is very telling. We were regular customers at the Fairview location whenever we were in town. It was always packed. There was no reason for them to close up other than bad management.
We'll see what happens to the Overland Park location, also owned by KC Hopps. Hopefully the Oak Ridge Manor site, under separate management, won't fall prey to the same problems.
