Tropical Trader Shrimp Company

This morning I visited a nursery at Medart Fla to get a couple of banana plants & a Harvey Lemon.  This being only a few mile north of Panacea, Fla I decided to  drive south for lunch.  ... I past 3 or 4 places open for lunch but none just clicked.   It had been more than 25 years since I had been in this area.

I got down to the Panacea bridge where Angelos' was located and turned around.  I thought I would go back to one of the shacks I had already past, but next to Angelos was the Tropical Trader Shrimp Company.  They had a sign stating lunch special $8.95; I wheeled in. It wasn't going to be cheaper anywhere.

BTW, this little place is owned by Angelos & Sons.    The last time I eat at Angelos was about 1978.  There was more than an hour wait and the food wasn't that great, then. I never had the desire to eat in their restaurant since.    Someone on the forum did a review earlier this year or last year.  And, the big restaurant over the water just reopened after being complete rebuilt due to hurricane damage.

Back to my lunch   ... the waitress give me the menu and I asked what the special was.  She stated describing some sort of pasta dish;    .... I said: hold-on, I didn't drive no 70 miles to look at the saltwater, then eat spaghetti.   ...  When the nice waitress came back, I asked her what the numbers beside the entree where; I pointed to the mullet12 & said is that 12 pieces.   She said; no darling, that's dollars.   ... Dam, thought to myself, lunch is going to $25 bucks... I'm way behind on the Apalach/gaterpoint/Panacea lingo  ...  I ordered the Local Special: shrimp, crab cake, mullet, & 2 sides ( fries & salad).

The fries and salad were served on the side plates. The fries were golden & crisp; the salad was a little large to be a lunch side. It was fresh, crisp and great with blu cheese dressing.   The shrimp was fried golden with a very light coating, good: the crab cake was nicely fried, moist and BIG.  It had good mixture of crab and crab lumps with just enough dressing to hold the cake together. (A rare find for a crab cake)  The mullet was nicely fried flaking and moist.     ... Sorry guys, I don't usually do food reviews so I didn't have my camera.    The pic below is the doggy box for my supper tonight.
(backing up a little)   while I was waiting for my order, I wounder over to the fresh counter.  There was dressed shrimp, just off-the boat shrimp; fresh flounder, grouper & mullet.  I think you could pick out what you wanted and the kitchen would prepare/cook for you.    Some of the prices were wrote on the display glass.   My waitress walk by, I asked her what was $2.    ... She said: ...   ....   .... Shrimp off the Boat ...   I asked if I could have 10lbs to go?   ... She said sure darling ...   Now in 1988 shrimp was more than $3.50/lb  off-the-boat.      Also when I walking away, I noticed: Red Roe $6/lb.    ... I will be making another trip down there SOON!   Red Roe has been more than $25/lb for many years.

Certain people in the Upper Midwest are not particularly fond of you right now.

Those shrimp really look good. I need to get back down to the Panacea/Carrabelle area.  I see that you are in Cairo and was wondering what you thought of Mr. Chick. I have a couple of customers in the area and we eat lunch there usually.

Mr Chick is good and the only place to eat if you want something other than pizza, Mexican, or Chinese in Cairo.    ... There is a another restaurant south of Cairo on Hwy 93, but I can't really recommend it.   Their fried oysters (seafood) has no taste.  The oysters are being washed.   Mr Chick has very good oyster plate.

    Update:
I made trip to Panacea yesterday and got 15 lbs of 'off-the-boat' shrimp - $30.   After cleaning, mostly removing the heads I had 12 lbs of shrimp.   They're in the freezer now and this will keep me until spring.   The picture below is 5 lbs of the shrimp before cleaning.   ....
