We Need a New Toaster ...

And I'm thinking about this:  http://www.amazon.com/Breville-BTA830XL-Die-Cast-4-Slice-Toaster/dp/B00AZY3TFE .

1)  Does anyone have one and care to comment?

2)  Anyone have a better idea?  (Given that we need a long slot).

I'm very happy with a 4-slot, wide-mouthed Michael Graves' designed Hamilton Beach I got from Target at about a third of the price of the Breville.   I think at the time I bought it, America's Test Kitchen had given it high marks.

I think I would buy the $5.47 tongs and use the $179.95 to go out to eat. Several times.

I think I paid about $20 for my GE at Walmart and it's chugging right along. That Brevil is a bit too rich for my blood.

There must be something in the ether. In the last month we had a microwave, toaster-oven, electric toothbrush and electric shaver go kaput.

    Who has a recommendation for a toaster-oven?

I have the middle Breville that does a lot of things.  Wish they still made the simple General Electric type.

They make a good product.  Wonder who makes the small appliances for them.  I'd have to get it with stainless knobs.  Also a two slice toaster so it doesn't take up so much room.  What's wrong with waiting?

Stay away from the Oster brand....ours hasn't toasted consistently since taking it out of the box.

I agree with mar.  Go with the Wolf.  It's only $399.99.

We looked at the Wolf, but the slots are too short for 'artisan-style' breads.  And then there is the matter of the price being truly laughable.  That said, I admit that the price of the Breville @ $179. is a tad risible as well.

The best toaster I ever had was a plastic-cased, long slot De'Longhi I purchased in 1988 at Price Club (before it became Costco) for $29.  It was great for bagels and odd-shaped breads.  A few years back I took it to work for a 'bagel-breakfast' meeting, forgot it, and it was swiped.

I replaced it with a very pretty 4 standard slot stainless steel Cuisinart with a ton of useless buttons I got for $59 at Costco.  It always was a PIA and a POS and I'm glad one of the levers finally broke giving me a need to get a long slot model.

So now, as I am in the market for a toaster I fondly recall grandparents having a single slot Sunbeam they had bought during the Depression.  It lasted until the 2000's when my mother finally discarded it, still in working shape.  It really had some heft; my 'pretty' Cuisinart is as light as a feather.  The fact that the Breville is die-cast and weighs 8.2#'s is a "feature" that attracts me.  Yes, the fact that it is 'motorized' is a bit concerning, but we are now in the 21st. Century.

I found a video on it:

BTW:  Thank you, Mr. Hoffman, for your $4.97 'alternative', but it just won't work on out Viking induction cooktop:

If the slices of your artisan bread are too long for a standard slot, would it be possible to, how can I put this,
    cut the slices in half?

    Hell, no!

My beloved loves getting artisanal breads sliced very thin to make herself sandwiches pleasing to her eye.  The Cuisinart POS did require trimming and always singed her thin, "custom" slices.  Note on the following video how the Breville automatically adjusts to the thickness of the slice and also accommodates odd, over-sized shapes.

Mrs. Metro "shopped" the Breville and got the lowest proce from (of all places!!!) Bloomingdale's:  $143., net - no tax, 'free shipping'; it arrives Wednesday.  Good thing, because Thursday is trash day; the Cuisinart will be in it.

    I did attempt a fix.
Sadly the problem was electronic, not mechanical.
In any case, good riddance to the Cuisinart (which made it into the trash four days early)!

I think this one that MH recommended has really long slots..........

He's quite partial to that camp stove toaster.  Fires that sucker up every morning in the back yard after returning from the Waffle House.  He loves it.
