Ahh, the logic of the McDLT, which never was really embraced. I imagine they would have had to create some kind of recycled heavy cardboard container.

What used to go on my char grilled burgers was a tomato paste type of salsa, sour pickle slices and chopped peanuts. Ate them from the time I was maybe 5 until 50 a few years ago when they closed the last Woody's Smorgesburger.

My burger logic has nothing at all to do with anything from McDonald's.

That would be no logic.

I'm in Houston, and the Texas standard seems to be lots of mustard. And often jalapenos.

Myself, I'm terribly open about burgers. I generally prefer American cheese (but it depends on the burger), and I usually add lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup (although I can live without one or the other when it comes to tomatoes and ketchup, which makes sense). I don't bother with pickles, but I like them on burgers, too (if that makes sense, and it probably doesn't). I also like bacon sometimes (it depends on my mood or hunger level).

As for all the other varieties, that's another story, and it often depends on the restaurant, etc. I'm learning (too slowly) that I'm really not into barbecue sauce and onion rings on burgers (especially from BK--yech).

Vegetables must go on the top. Cheese can go on the meat or bun. Ideally, the bun is toasted or at least warmed.

When my mother makes burgers, by the way, she puts the cheese on the bottom bun and the meat on the top bun to serve it. It drives me nuts. I always have to pick the meat up and put it on top of the cheese.

my city doesn't offer a terribly exciting standard for burger toppings. as far as i know, burgers generally include lettuce, tomato, raw onion, american/cheddar cheese, with condiments and pickle spears on the side.

however, my dad's special burger was pretty exciting. my dad would go all out when he was allowed to make burgers. This meant a pretty thick (maybe an inch) patty done to med/med well, slice of pan-fried spam (fried hard and crispy), couple slices of bacon, american cheese, and an oozy fried egg, all dressed with mayo and ketchup. there might have been some red leaf lettuce involved as well. they were incredible, and my mom would be sorely pissed that he fed us such amazing crap.

Sauteed mushrooms
Pepperoni
Roasted garlic marinara sauce
Ground sausage in the burger
Fresh mozzarella

If this is a repeat of an earlier post, sorry about the duplication.

My ideal Burger will be set-up as follows----Toasted Bun, Burger (or two , if relatively thin) Usually the 1/2 lb patty is as large as I want.  Burger on the bottom, mild cheddar or American cheese (optional), Onion- grilled or raw...I like lots of Onion. Several slices of medium crispy Bacon. The Maple-flavored Costco thick cut works the best for me. Slices of red tomato. Thick & sweet BBQ sauce KC Masterpiece or similiar.

I am very particular about my hamburgers, especially the ones I fix at home.
1st- the bun, large sesame bun, lightly toasted.
2nd- the order of the condiements is very important.  Bottom bun, brown mustartd, sweet onion, dill pickle slices.  Burger topped with swiss cheese, large slice of tomato, leaf lettuce, mayo.

OMG, what a mess of a burger Mar had when Woody's was open.  Her burger looked right down nasty!  I might have to stock up on chopped peanuts just so she won't miss the place too much.

At work on Fridays we always order burgers for lunch and it's  amusing to see who wants what on theirs.  It ranges anywhere from naked to with everything.  I like just about anything on a burger as long as it's not drenched in any kind of condiment.  I just can't do one oozing and dripping with stuff running out of it all over the place.

Assuming I control the arrangment and sequence of the additions to my sandwich, then I would build it as follows

Bottom half Bun toasted & buttered- One 1/4 lb beef patty -one slice Swiss cheese- thick slice grilled red onion- Second 1/4 lb beef patty- second slice of cheese-3 long thick slices applewood smoked Bacon cut to fit the size of the Burger (@6crossStrips) either A1 sauce/Tabasco Chipotle sauce on the toasted top half of the Bun.

Second choice- Bottom half Onion Roll Toasted and buttered-- 8 oz ribeye Medium-, grilled onions carmelized spread to cover meat, 4 oz Pastrami, hot but well-drained on the Beef, Swiss cheese on top then Brown Mustard on toasted Onion Roll Top.

Nice!  Happy Birthday, Paul!

Standard is mustard, pickles and if available grilled onions.  Lettuce is okay.  I don't like tomatoes or usually cheese on my burgers.

When at The Counter that gives you an entire list of toppings I choose roasted garlic and blue cheese.

When Woody's Smorgasburger was open here they had a tomato salsa made of pizza sauce and tomato paste with lots of black pepper and a touch of sugar and salt.  Slather that on a char-grilled burger and top with crushed peanuts and sour pickle slices and there wasn't a better burger in the world.

I've probably already mentioned the peanut burgers earlier in this thread.  They're that good!

If I'M making at home, just the standard toppings. If someone else is cooking, I'll try anything once. Buying, the price determines how exotic I go, plus the current status of my digestion. When I was in high school a million years ago, I'd go across to the bowling alley for a FRESH burger and fries. Delicious with just mustard, lettuce and onion with salt and ketchup on the fries. My mother's hamburgers which she broiled were ok but the alley's were made on a flat top grill. Just seemed special to me.

I usually put mayo, mustard and ketchup on mine. Back in high school I used to buy the burgers they had ready made (they baked the buns and used decent beef) and all that came on them was mustard and pickle. They were some of the best burgers ever. And cost little to nothing.

I never put bacon or egg on my cheeseburger. Also, I love chili but, not on my burger!
And, I only use ketchup as an ingredient in my "special sauce" which also contains a little liquid Hickory smoke .

So, depending on my mood and what I'm craving at the time, must add-ons are, a thick slab of melted American or Cheddar cheese plus, (chopped) onions, crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, pickle chips and, good quality MUSTARD.

Anything else is un-American!

For buns, I like flat, "fast food" style buns with poppy seeds.

My burger toppings in order of what I like on  a burger

1.) Pickle slices  - Dill or kosher dill

2.) Onion - Raw, grilled, or both -- and preferable yellow/white, not red

3.) Ketchup - A small amount

4.) Iceberg lettuce - Preferable not that shredded up grass-like stuff

5.) Mustard - A very small amount or none, or it seems to take over the burger.  Yellow mustard for burgers, brown mustard / spicy mustard for hot dogs or sausages.

6.)  Cheese -  Usually none, but occasionally I'll put on some white American or Swiss on rare occasions.

I generally find that cheese hides some of the good "grilled" / "charred" taste that I look for in a burger.  Speaking of that, I like the taste of well cooked / grilled  meat, and not raw meat, so nothing with the word "rare" for me.  I have it well done.  I'll eat them thick or thin, but prefer the more classic diner/RoadFood  style thin ones with "crisp" edges over the thick "gourmet" burgers.   If I want more meat, I get a double.

I find that if they're thin, they cook quickly and do not have time to get tough.  Thin style can be well done  and still juicy.

For rolls, I prefer ones that are not too bulky and bready.   I don't want the bread taking over the burger.  Having the roll toasted is a plus.

Glenn

Well, I do use Ketchup (Hunt's) and Mayo (Blue Plate) for my "special sauce". Both of which are made in the good ole USA.

Blue Plate mayo is hard to find in Dallas. I think only Kroger stocks it. I never thought I'd ever switch from my lifelong allegiance of Hellman's to Blue Plate Mayonnaise until I read an article about Blue Plate. Amongst other different ingredients, Blue Plate uses egg yolks only rather than whole eggs. I also believe Blue Plate was the very first commercial mayo available for sale in the US.

Well, I can't speak for Duke's never having tried it. But, I most definitely like and prefer Blue Plate over Hellman's ever since first trying it about a year ago. No going back to Hellman's now.

Comparing Blue Plate with Hellman's, aside from the yolks only vs. the whole eggs in Hellman's, Blue Plate has a higher ratio of vinegar (second ingredient on nutrition label)
Which gives Blue Plate a "tangier" taste which I like very much. The difference in the two brands is actually quite small but, large enough for me to notice and, prefer.

If I can find Duke's in a smaller size to try, I will.
