What are you listening to right now?

What the heck, it's slow around the forums. So what are you listening to right now? It doesn't have to be music: ambient sound is also acceptable.

For instance, right now I'm listening to the album Amorino by Isobel Campbell, a Scottish singer of the ilk that drives my wife absolutely crazy, because she has this weedy little high-pitched voice of uncertain pitch, singing twee little acoustic pop songs with folk and bossa nova touches. Personally I love this kind of thing.

But I'm also listening to the sound of my air conditioner in the window next to me, which is making this weird sort of purring sound because it's on the dehumidifier setting, and to a refrigerator car in the train yard behind the house.

Amen! That string of singles between "Start!" and "Have You Ever Had It Blue" -- very few writers ever get a run like that.

Update: Now it's Queen's Sheer Heart Attack and the refrigerator car has trundled off. Ah, "Killer Queen"...

The main sounds around this house are the noise of 3 small grandchildren. The 22 month old is sitting with her book and singing Miss Mary Mack Mack Mack over and over again. The four year old is running around with one of his jet planes (making all the proper sounds) and unfortunatly, they crash quite often so he has to start the whole thing over againThe six year old keeps telling the au pair that SHE IS NOT CHEATING as they sit and play cards. In the background, au pair is playing Madonna's "Like A Virgin" which the little ones think is "Like A Bird Jam"............man, I realized that I have to get a life!

I am running in and out... 2 - 10 lb Pork Buttes in the Smoker from noon til 10pm tonight. They get basted/sauced every 45 minutes. 4 large Vidalia's will be going in (in foil) at 6pm for the last 4 hours.
We went to the Henderson KY BBQ & Blues Festival last night...Louis Hatchett (Roadfooder "LOUIS") met us there and sat with us thru much of the evening. We had a great nite of Cajun Music and conversation. Didn't get home til 1am. so I am resting between BBQ checks ...With the Wings Channel right now.

I'll accept that with the caveat that unlike the Jam and the Style Council, who always did ALL their best work on singles, XTC's singles are almost never the best songs on their albums, "Senses Working Overtime" and "Wonderland" being the exceptions that come to mind most readily.

Still the Queen album, no refrigerator cars, but the door to the office is open, so I can hear the high-velocity air circulator out in the hallway. Summertime brings an excess of pink noise when you live in an old house without central air.

The Kill Bill soundtracks are the best ones I've heard in years. I love all the classic Morricone on the second volume. You know Kryztof Komeda's soundtrack work, Grampy?

I95: I bow to no one in my admiration of Squeeze, especially the golden age of U.K. Squeeze through Sweets From A Stranger, but even more than XTC, Squeeze very rarely put their best songs out as singles: as good as Singles 45s and Under is, you could put out an even better compilation of Squeeze's early years featuring their album tracks. ("Is That Love" was a particularly terrible choice for a single from East Side Story -- why not "In Quintessence"?)

Now up: another Queen album, A Night at the Opera. I bought that Crown Jewels box set on eBay last week for only $35 and I'm slowly going through it. Always liked "You're My Best Friend"...

I liked the Undercard on your poster; Ultravox, whom I never saw, and Be BopDeluxe, who never were able to reach their recorded magic in concert, at least the 3 times I saw them. I was just reminicing the other day about seeing XTC in concert, 'cept I couldn't remember where or when. My friend Gib filled me in. He still remembers the past, unlike me. Bill

OK, so we agree on Squeeze. What are the chances we can now
bring this musical summit to this century and
    agree on Pulp?

Big band music. A CD of the last concert the big band I am in played. A mixture of some contemporary charts like Bopularity, Tiger of san Pedro, Blues & the Absecessed Tooth, and classics like Fly Me to the Moon.

Later, I'll probably pop some good cajun like Steve Riley or Beausoleil in the computers CD drive.

I95: I'm afraid that unless you agree that Jarvis Cocker is a self-important prat who's written maybe two good songs in his entire career, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Pulp's Cocker is, indeed, a poseur but
suppose we find 21st century common ground on,
    say, the Dandy Warhols?

Ray Charles, "Mess Around". I saw Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for the first time the other night (there are strange gaps in my movie watching and I'm trying to fill them) and absolutely loved the scene where John Candy is driving the car, listening to this song. The car goes all over the road as John sings along, plays the dashboard like a piano, and launches into an air trombone solo. Wonderful scene in a sweet, funny movie.

I'm also listening to my mother fix a dinner that I will be unable to eat, since I have to go to work in half an hour.

Ah, Ray. I pretended last week's national day of mourning was for him. Can't believe he was only 73 -- he packed three lifetimes into those years.

I95: You know, other than "Bohemian Like You" (which I liked the first 598 times I heard it on the radio), I've never heard any Dandy Warhols songs. I admire the keyboard player's willingness to take her shirt off at the drop of a hat, though!

    Fountains of Wayne, perhaps? Grandaddy?

Nothing but the AC on now, as I'm off to buy ingredients for tonight's dinner, a big ol' chef salad.

Krystof Komeda: Rosemary's Baby and Fearless Vampire Killers. My soundtrack collection, between CDs and LPs, is around 900. That's ORT territory for just one part of my music.

An iTunes playlist thrown together last night while playing online poker: Cab Calloway, Jefferson Airplane, Mark Eitzel, Robert Plant, Jean Knight, Cornershop, and about 40 others...including a new guy I've just heard of, Slaid Cleaves....his song "Drinkin' Days" is awesome...

Other good Dandy Warhols songs: "Horse Pills", "Boys Better", something with "Ego" in the title....

Squeeze ruled the world from 78-81 or so.....

Sunny and warm as we do the smoking. I filled up with gas last nite for $1.71 in Henderson, KY. Still have the Zydeco Music echoing thru my head.

An excellent compromise suggestion and and an even
better group. FoW has, indeed, been previously discussed
on this very site and maybe this current ressurection
will ressurect another RoadFoodie FoW fan, Chumley.
