I liked Timeless too. They keep the science of time travel simple (this is a TV show). I remember a previous show where the traveler showed up naked, and had to spend a quarter of the show before he could call the lab and say "Conumbrium", letting them know that the machine worked. The computer graphics in the new show are great. The Hindenburg looked real.

Getting picky, the cops would not have been surprised by the gun brought by the travelers. The 1911 style pistol had been in use for decades, even if not by cops.

While it was only the pilot episode, Designated Survivor showed some promise.

I don't know about that show. Is it about the person who goes to an undisclosed location during the State of the Union speech?........and then things go bad???

Yup...its on ABC, but they're moving it around, so check your local listings.

It's somewhat the same scenario by which Tom Clancy made Jack Ryan the President:  the entire government gets killed during a State of the Union address.

Clancy had a disgruntled Japanese pilot fly a 747 into the Capitol in Debt of Honor(BTW, his novel was published in 1994; I hope it didn't spawn the 9/11 plot).

We don't know (yet) who was responsible in Designated Survivor.  Kiefer Sutherland's character is a milquetoast HUD Secretary who suddenly becomes President.  I'm guessing that the mild-mannered former professor will soon be summoning his inner Jack Bauer.

My DVR is staying tuned, especially as the delicious Maggie Q is in the cast.

Edit:  Speaking of disaster scenarios, I'm still pi$$ed off at HBO for cancelling The Brink, a truly wonderful black comedy.  It was the best and funniest show on TV.

And now there's that general who wants to go all "Seven Days in May"!

O.K., enough of Designated Survivor!
I "signed up" for a 'Jack Bauer is now President', just as I am sure most did.
Talk about a bait & switch!
Sutherland's 'new' character' is the polar opposite of Jack Bauer.
I know this show is fiction, but to be enjoyed it has to have at least a soupcon of verisimilitude.
But this is Bizarro World.
At least it has Maggie Q.
Beyond that, .

After saying that I wouldn't, I have continued to watch DS. But for Metro's comments, I wouldn't have even known the part that Maggie Q plays. (I looked her up). I was glad to see the insubordinate general fired, but doubt that in real life, any general, let alone a 4 star would act as the jerk did in the show.

I'm rather partial to NBC's Superstore, especially after hearing some of Mrs. C's stories about Kohl's over the past 20 years.

Oh man, give me a break. That show couldn't even equal an SNL skit they used to do on Target stores.

We talked about "Timeless", just about a month ago. I have continued to watch it, but with less and less enthusiasm. A story in my local paper, today, was headlined,"Time for Timeless Limited". I don't know how many episodes are already in the can, but, IMO, it is time for a serious re-write, or re-edit, if they have any chance at all of a second season. (or even to finish this season)

Re:What are you watching? 2016/11/09 09:11:11 (permalink)
I wasted a couple of hours watching election returns, and went to bed at 9. I woke up to use the bathroom about 2AM, and flicked on the TV for 5 minutes. I ended up watching for an hour. Smarter people than I watched a DVD, and went to bed on time. They woke up this AM, and in 5 minutes got a total update.  Lots of ads were sold on all of the networks, and all of the networks filled a lot of time, when the results could have just been a banner at the bottom of the screen during normal programming. The talking heads all complain about the big money in elections, but it is all phony because most of that cash ends up going for TV ads...... Note that I have not mentioned who I supported.

If you have HBO on demand, Bill Maher #410 is now available.

I must say, that was 'a show'.

All the masks came off; it was the funniest group therapy session since Bob Newhart!

I rarely engage in Schadenfruede, but that was just too tasty to resist.

The Grand Tour is now available on Prime.

Call it Top Gear meets Monty Python, with a bigger budget. They got rid of the celebrity interviews (good) and affordable automobiles (bad). Overall I enjoyed it.

Two History Channel shows I am very fond of have returned for another season, fascinating stuff, at least for me:

The Curse of Oak Island.  I remember reading the Readers' Digest article that got the brothers going; it fascinated me as well.

Hunting Hitler.  Remember the "special' about Adolph Hitler's skull (that the KGB kept locked away until after the Cold War)?  DNA and other analysis showed that it wasn't Hitler's!

So ... stay tuned.

Earlier this year BelleReve mentioned Kevin Belton in a different thread:

BelleReve
Kevin Belton - not a household name but is starting a new PBS cooking show on Saturdays starting 4/16 (I think it repeats Sundays).  He's going to be good, a big man (6'9", 400lbs) with the warmth and personality to match

His show now occupies Create TV's "bookend" time slots (5:30pm and 8:30pm CST) so I've been watching it regularly.

Watching a few shows, but really enjoying Anthony Bourdain's new season of "Parts Unknown".

Edit to add: We watched the new Amazon Prime show "The Grand Tour" the other night. It was great to see Jeremy Clarkson and his mates back in the saddle. The BBC really screwed up firing him and letting the other two walk off from Top Gear.

Oak Island is interesting.  I'm in the 3rd season of The Killing and just finished Orange is the New Black.

Finally able to watch Netflix now that I entered the real world and have Spectrum.

How did I live without it?

I'm still watching it too. I don't get your excitement about Maggie Q, though............a good job by a good actress, yes, but IMO, no better than a lot of the other cast members.

Once again, I'm sorry to see what could be "reality" trumped by a plot line. If the kid of a high govt official is kidnapped, and the cops know it as they do here, he would never be unwatched, and would not get to have a secret meeting with the kidnappers, even if he wanted it. Maybe I'm too invested in a run of the mill thrill show..............

Well, a suggestion for the immediate moment is the Police Story binge on Decades...

It's an OTA network that mixes history-oriented news programming with classic TV shows.  Relive.  Remember.  Relate.

I'm in the middle of season 2 of The Americans , on Netflix. I also sort of enjoy American Housewife , although I agree with the review that said good acting is being held back by so-so scripts. I have not been seeing news that ANY of the new season shows are big hits.

The Young Pope on HBO.

Just like the otherwise engrossing Designated Survivor it's pretty easy to see 'where it's going": seems that the College of Cardinals was duped into picking the Anti-Christ as Pope.

Oops!

Well (thank God!) it's fiction, but it promises to be one "helluva" ride.

Beyond the plot, it is magnificently composed, costumed, and filmed - a teal treat to the eye.

In sum, it is 'must watch TV for me.

Re:What are you watching? 2017/01/21 16:28:53 (permalink)
I watched the entire four hours of The Divided States of America, a "Frontline" special on PBS.  Truly, it is a "must watch" for anyone with an interest in history and politics.  Whether it "fits your perspective" or helps you understand others, watching it is a most useful exercise.

And, I say that not because I agree with its POV; I just admire slickly produced propaganda and this is as slick as it gets.  For me it was a yuck-fest; for many others I suspect it may be an almost religious experience.  In any case, it's sure worth a watch.
