What is Jerry's Delicatessen Thinking?

I was at Jerry's in Marina del Rey the other day picking up some sweet and sour cabbage soup for my brother.

I couldn't believe what I saw!  Instead of all the large platters of salads in the refrigerated display, it was filled with pre-priced containers of the salads.  Stacks of salad to-go containers.

I have no idea how many ounces were in those containers.

No more asking for a pound of this or a half pound of that.  Just containers.

They already got rid of kreplach, knishes and kishka.

Guess they're working on getting rid of Jerry's altogether.

Not all that unusual, unfortunately. Delis are a thing of the past. I can think of maybe two places within 150 miles where I can get kishka and knishes now. Sad. And kreplach? Most delis don't even know the word. I think I'll start asking the Chinese deli down here that makes dumplings if the can whip some up!

Delis died in NYC decades ago, why are you so shocked?

I knew it was all over when delis here added things like tacos, breakfast burritos and nachos to their menu. In Jerry's case, they added things like Korean Bulgogi, pizzas and Chicken Milanese. That's not a deli----that's just a mis-guided coffee shop.

No one appreciates anything until it's gone. The new normal, I think I'll try to visit more of these places in the new year, maybe even thank them for being there. The heart and soul of Italian and Jewish deli's was the experience at the deli. The people you meet at the counter, the people you talk with at the table next to you. I remember being at the Carnegie Deli in LV, all the people in the restaurant were from New York. The people from the other 49 states just don't get it, they didn't grow up with it, don't miss it. Every time I go back to New York, I realize how much I miss it...............pnwc

We have a pretty decent deli in Columbus.  If you don't believe me ask Poverty Pete.  I think he ate there 3 times this past summer!

Delicatessens here aren't dead.  Just seems that Jerry's is trying to kill itself.

Prepackaged containers of pickles... 3 to a pack.  Just weird!

That's a shame, Mar. Luckily, we still have a deli here in Milwaukee( Benjis) that still serves whatever portions you want-like 1 pickle! Homemade kugel, potato salad, etc. Whats next at Jerrys-preportioned meat?

Katzinger's has a whole barrel of pickles, you take as many as you want.

Katella Deli in Los Alamitos has also installed a pre-packaged cooler with containers and sandwiches, but at least they allow you to order at the counter if you need different quantities.
