What is a benedictine Sandwich!!???

On the front page of Roadfood, there is a review of the cottage Cafe in Louisville ,KY. The writer showed a photo of a Hot Brown, which I have heard of, but i have never before heard of a Benedictine sandwich. Exactly what is it? As a Catholic, when you say benedictine to me, your are referring to the monks and nuns of the order founded by St.Benedict of Nursia, centuries ago. IS it made up  mainly of vegetables, or some sort of fish  sandwich/ Inquireing minds want to know.

Possibly a reference to benedictine spread, made with cucumbers and cream cheese among other ingredients.

said review includes a paragraph describing said sandwich, and the review also includes a picture of said sandwich

I live only 100 miles from Louisville and had never heard of such a thing before reading about it on Roadfood

I suspect many in Louisville have never heard of our (Cincinnati) goetta, either :-)

    HollyDolly-
The review of Cottage Café is mine.  Until our first visit there approximately five years ago, I had never heard of the Benedictine sandwich before, either.  The nice ladies at Cottage Café assured us it is very much a Louisville thing.

    Here is another view:

The color is a little odd.  I took multiple photos trying to get the color a little more normalized, but that's really what it looks like.  BTW, Michael Stern reviewed another place in Kentucky that also offers Benedictine sandwiches,  Star Hill Provisions in Loretto.  He goes into much more detail about the sandwich.

It's delicious!  It is a spread made with cucumber, a little onion, cream cheese, and some dill weed.

We made some a few years ago for a Kentucky Derby party, from a recipe out of a "classic Kentucky" cookbook (can't recall the name of the book).  We made them as cocktail sandwiches to serve with mint juleps.  We were underwhelmed by the sandwiches. The mint juleps, however, were excellent.

I stopped buying that because of the defective caps on the bottles...the stuff kept evaporating!
