A Polish dish. I don't know how to spell it. Maybe my mother just made it up. But she called it "Motzchai," which basically means "to soak." It was merely a soup bowl of dark brown beef gravy...thicker than consomme, but not too thick, with noticeable bits of onions strewn through it.
With the bowl, you are given about 2 or three slices of rye bread. You put the bowl on a little folding table in front of the TV, turn the TV on to your favorite show (perhaps cartoons...maybe cowboys), and then dunk pieces of the bread in the Motzchai, until both are gone. If you want more, your mother rustles up some more, and with amazing speed. How she was able to make it from scratch at a moment's notice, it dawns on me of late, was amazing. So you dunked your motzchai, watched your cartoons, and all was well with the world.
That was my comfort food. Of course, if a feller needed even more comforting, there was always potato latkes. And hers were the best.

Mashed taters.

Biscuits and gravy.

Fried chicken.

(I make the best mashed taters in the world. I make the best "B's & G's" in the world.) I'm not very good at making fried chicken.

Last night, we returned home after 3 stressful days of a family death and memorial service. We were all pretty much drained.
I made some mac and cheese ( not the kind from the box, but elbow
macaroni cooked just right, with butter, milk and cheese all melted into it. Now that was just what kind of food that we needed.

Ok, I know this is weird, but my comfort food has always been leftover elbow macaroni in warm milk with butter and salt and pepper. This has been my comfort food since I was a child.

My wife and I are in complete argreement on this. Five minutes in the arms of the other and we can face the world. Our dog or cat will do if we can't be together, or makes it a little better if we can.

There are times that a bowl of eggs nooked with whatever you usually put in omelets is great, especially surrounded by good hearty whole wheat bread for me, half rye for her. Or a good ol' fashioned peanut butter and jelly sammich. This way, the dog gets whatever got stuck to the bowl or the corner of the sandwich, too. Can't abuse her, can we?
