Mar, that all looks great! How was the uni? I am a big fan of it when I get it at sushi restaurants. Never have seen it spread on bread of any type. Everything just looks wonderful!

Geez, Mar, that makes my Mediterranean meal look lame!

Tonight my grocery shopping plans were derailed by having to leave my car overnight at the shop (my catalytic converter is shot), so I foraged in the freezer and came up with chicken thighs (baked and brushed with BBQ sauce), mixed vegetables in cheese sauce, and the cottage cheese wasn't out of date so I added that instead of coming up with something else.

Holy cow, Mar...was that all for 1 person?!?

Sorry to hear about the car, Felix.  There are some extremely cost-effective ways to deal with an expired catalytic converter, but it's best I don't describe them here.

I had ham tonight.  I'm in St. Louis for work and there's a small party for a departmental coworker on Thursday, so I stopped at a local supermarket (Dierberg's) to pick up a couple of shrimp rings as my donation to the buffet table.  I didn't feel like going anywhere for dinner so I grabbed one of those fully cooked ham steaks from the cooler, brought it back to my hotel room, tore it up with my bare hands in the sink, and ate it cold.

I like ham.

Brad, sometimes I swear you could be my guy's brother... I could almost hear him telling the same ham story in the same words!

I'm good with having my mechanic replace it; he's a genuinely good guy, it's going to cost me less than any estimate I could find online, and I would like to not have pieces of it blocking my exhaust any more. Acceleration is my friend!

Root-Beer Man...  It was delciously luscious.  Very creamy rich.

There were six of us and it was served family style.  The website says it's Israeli.  Sure it is.

I guess you could label that repast "Israeli".  I lived there for a few years and saw many types of food, (they're a huge melting pot of food styles, amazingly enough), and all those look reasonably familiar to me. I love breads with za'atar, they're just so tasty. One thing that they had on your spread that I never did see in Israel though is the uni, even though urchins are all over the place in their part of the Med.

I got to cook for the first time in something like three weeks! I've been craving lasagna for at least a month, so I spent the whole day in my kitchen starting with sauce and made one that weighed probably 8 pounds. Served with French-cut green beans and cottage cheese.

I've also been to a Mexican restaurant that had an uni dish.  This was before I was brave enough to try it.  I think mostly it's an affected Los Angeles thing.

In the midst of making a ridiculously involved coconut cake, I realized we had to eat dinner and mom flatly refused to eat lasagna again (more for me!). So I punted and came up with a 30-minute chicken pot pie.

My wife was in Chicago judging beer, so I took the kids to Portillo's. Short line to order but they were in the weeds real quick. Despite the time it took to get our food, it was still pretty good, even if we did have to sit outside. Wasn't overly impressed by the Portillo's (Chicago dog) hot dog, but the Italian beef with sweet peppers and mozzarella was pretty good. I also really liked my chocolate malt shake. My daughter had lasagna and said it was pretty good, too. Everyone was pretty happy. Now if they could just do the orders faster and had more seating.

Felix, the pot pie looks pretty good...were there fairly few carrots or were they hiding when you took the photo?

RBM, if you post why the Portillo's dog was somewhat lackluster, chicagostyleog will send his Vienna Beef goon squad there to straighten things out.

Not sure a goon squad will help. It was the whole thing that was a hot mess. Peppers, pickle, tomato, neon relish. They all served to cover up what might have been a perfectly good all beef hot dog. Couldn't taste it at all through the salad that was on top. The bun was a nice quality, though. Maybe next time I'll try their chili dog, instead. That seems like a slightly better bet, (unless their hot dog chili has beans in it. That would be a deal breaker).

Edit:Just went to the Portillo's website and looked at their pics of the chili dog. It has beans in it. Sad.

I've been under the impression my whole life that the definition of a Chicago dog is one topped with that "salad". Am I wrong?

Mar, they're adorable!

Brad, I think it was just the way I scooped... it was the standard store brand bag of frozen mixed vegetables, and there's usually a pretty good proportion of carrots.

I may or may not have actual food tonight, and if I do it'll be leftover lasagna when I get home, probably eaten over the kitchen sink. Because today is my delayed birthday party, complete with Truly Ridiculous Coconut Cake!

Cringe all you want.  I ate a single serve, microwave Kraft macaroni & CHEESE.

If I would make a box of it I'd eat the entire box.  These single serving cups are perfect!

I've always got boxed mac & cheese in the house... not only is it comfort food, it reminds me of the first time the Guy and I were dating almost 30 years ago. Sentimental comfort food!

Tonight I was in a mood and also need to make room in my freezer, so I rubbed a chicken with Greek seasoning, filled it with onions and lemons, and roasted it. Instead of just plain mashed potatoes, I did them with Greek seasoning and feta mixed in, and then braised some Brussels sprouts and garlic in butter. And now I don't have time to cook until next week Tuesday.

Strange combination for dinner because I could.  I discovered Soy Chorizo.  It's less fat and fewer calories than the beef or pork but the flavor is 100%!

Soy Chorizo, Onions, Eggs, tortillas, Blue Plate Mayonnaise and an artichoke.

Show catering today, such as it was. Taco bar, soft shell only, with choice of pulled chicken or beef, rice, refried beans, and the usual toppings. Salad and jalapeno-chicken bites on the side, and minuscule slivers of cheesecake for dessert.
