Today was my union local's picnic, catered by the same BBQ place we went to three weeks ago (Pit Stop). Pulled pork, smoked chicken thighs, potato salad, coleslaw, yeast rolls, tons of BBQ sauce, and cornbread muffins. And beer, and iced tea. He had to leave early to go do his show, but I stayed to the end and came home with a dozen cornbread muffins.

Tonight I labored long and hard over dinner. We each wanted something different and so lleechef is having a stir fry of Chinese vegetables and I'm having pork lo mein. Honestly, having to drive all the way over to the Chinese take-out place and back was a chore. Well, have to go. I think I just heard the microwave bell ring.

They deliver, but they charge for delivery.

No going out today.  The air is filled with smoke from a fire about 60 miles from me.  Over 20,000 acres burned so far.  It's horrible outside.

So..  I had another salad.

Catering win! Dinner was a choice of vegetarian lasagna, London Broil, or Chicken Marsala. With roasted asparagus, roasted baby red potatoes, and honey-mustard carrots. Also a chef's salad bar, fresh-baked breads, and vegetable soup. Dessert was creme brulee with fresh raspberries.

Mar, that fire is just around the corner from my best friend's sister-in-law's house. They're on the side that hasn't had to evacuate, but you can see it from their yard. Makes me sad.

Felix, it's just horrible.  As of this morning 18 homes were lost and one man lost his life.

This is a picture I took from my balcony.  The smoke was carried by the winds.

I'm not that close to the large condo building.  I used a 200mm lens.

I assume she used her iPhone for this one, taken earlier this evening. It's unbelievable, and it hurts me to think about. The irony is she left Tahoe during fire season to vacation with her in-laws. That dark thing between the two palms on the horizon is the smoke plume.

I was in a parking structure in El Segundo Sunday and you could see the smoke plumes rising like huge cumulus clouds out of the mountains.  I took a picture with my iPhone but it was too far away.

It's just so sad and it's not even fire season here.

I'm hoping they can get it contained soon. Looks like they made a little progress today, at least.

I had to cook tonight since the guy was at the theatre and I was too lazy to put on shoes or get dressed. Vegetables and rice vermicelli in peanut sauce, bag salad on the side. Mom hated it, I loved it. Whatever.

Felix, I love pasta in peanut sauce and especially rice pasta!

NO dinner for me tonight because I had a very filling lunch at Wind & Sea Restaurant in Dana Point.

This is a Seafood Cobb Salad with lots of lettuce underneath.  Just wish they had cooked the scallops a tad more.  They didn't seem to be cooked at all.

Bay Scallops.  Little nuggets of raw scallops!

Well..  That's what they called them.  Don't know if I've ever had a Calico Scallop or even a Bay Scallop because they're always called Bay Scallops when they're tiny like these.

Yeah, that's a problem. Lots of restaurants and supermarkets call them bay scallops even when they're calicos. Bay scallops are cold-water scallops -- the very best, and they're not that plentiful. Calicos come from warmer water and they have to be steamed open, which means they're partially cooked before they're sold.

I don't think these were even partially cooked.  Three salads and the table and three plates with only scallops on them when everything was finished.

Looking for Dinner ideas? Well that's great because my new book "21-Fun, Fast, Out of the box, Budget friendly meals" has lots of them. Not only are they budget friendly, but they are fun for the whole family. So for me Dinner might be Baked Butter Garlic Chicken, Pesto Stuff Shell, or Pepperoni Stuff Chicken.

I LOVE Ramen!  I might have to have it tomorrow.  One of my comfort foods.

I was taken out to lunch by a friend today for accompanying him to an un-airconditioned flooring store and then an un-airconditioned tile store.  It was a miserable, hot experience.

But he took me out for lunch!

We went to Arby's.

Maybe that's why he thought it was special.

It was not.

That might be the only Arby's within a twenty mile radius of me.

Old school tonight.....Tuna noodle casserole. No cans of cream of mushroom soup were harmed in tonight's meal, all from scratch, including the tuna that I canned last year. Topping of crushed potato chips. Green salad side.

Catering! Beef lasagna, vegetarian lasagna, some other kind of pasta with meatballs, and portobella mushroom sandwiches (slices of mushrooms used as bread). Pesto green beans, fresh bread, and a full salad bar. Choice of flourless chocolate cake or raspberry white chocolate cheesecake for dessert.
