Playa Vista is a fairly new community built just south of me.  I ate at one of the newer restaurants there... Sol Cocina.  I guess you'd call their food a California twist or modern twist on Mexican food.  I was warned that their servings were large so for my first visit I ordered a shrimp and poblano quesadilla with a mango salsa.

They also know how to use cilantro... one large piece that can be removed with ease.

Well, if nothing else I'm good about sharing. Oh, and if she shows up here erase everything I've said before she sees it.

Technically I went to Lucky Luciano's (formerly Georgio's Pizza) for lunch, but their Monday special was two slices so I got one to go. For lunch I had BBQ chicken and bacon with pineapple, and for dinner I'm having Hawaiian. And a beer. Maybe several beers. Today was hard.

Catering tonight, and the unwritten rule stating that if lunch is bad dinner will be excellent held true! Dinner was salad, roast beef, mashed potatoes, white cheddar macaroni and cheese, roasted asparagus, and a choice between several cakes and pies for dessert. I chose lemon cake with cream cheese filling.

I've been making an aluminum cover for a tabletop bbq so the rats can't get in to it.  I want to be able to use gas instead of charcoal once in awhile.

Had to go back to Home Depot because someone had opened the package of #8-32 stainless steel bolts I had purchased and replaced them with fine thread bolts of some unknown number that wouldn't work at all!  End of rant.  So, on the way back home I drove through Jack in the Box and picked up 3 tacos.

So I'm not hungry yet.  Maybe French Toast later.

It's hot here!  Hot and muggy!  What's happening to my beach weather???

Still ranting.

Sorry

When my husband and I first lived together, some 35+ years ago, there was a Jack in the Box near by.  I had never heard of one before. I loved their burritos and burgers. I had never had a burrito before. Closed a long time ago and there were never any others in our area
Tonight I made baked cod with a parmesan, celery seed and mayo topping. So good and no one ever guesses mayo is an ingredient.

You're making me hungry!  I have no idea what dinner will be.  Been working on my project all day.

It's almost finished!  Can you see how I'm going to use it?  Just put over the grill and nothing can get in!

I should have defrosted something.  I don't even have milk for oatmeal.

Peanut butter and jelly may be calling tonight.

Nothing wrong wit PB&J but you have to butter the peanut butter slice of bread.

Lisa, that's Asiana Tan Tan Ramen which is a sesame seed based soup with ground beef, spinach the addition of grilled eggplant, chile oil and of course ramen noodles.  It's outstanding and I always want it.  I've had Tan Tan Ramen at other places and it never compares.  Spicy Hot and Delicious!

Those are vegetable gyoza on the plate with a ponzu dipping sauce.  They were mostly cabbage and I didn't really care for them.  I went in hungry which I shouldn't do.

I've never made it but this recipe sounds very close but I'm not sure about the pork, wine or bean sauce.  Not sure about the metric measurements, either!

Tantan Ramen Noodles

  • Serves 2-3

    soup
    500ml chicken stock
    200g ramen noodles
    2 tsp sesame oil
    2 tsp rice vinegar
    3 tbsp soy sauce
    4 tbsp tahini sesame paste
    2 tsp chili oil
    2 cloves of sliced garlic

    garnish
    400g minced pork
    4 tsp cooking sake
    2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp tenmenjan sweet bean sauce
    3 spring onions
    150g spinach

Pre-heat a frying pan with a little oil. With your hands mix the pork mince together with the cooking sake, then add to the pan. Once the pork has browned, add the tenmenjan and soy sauce and cook until the meat becomes drier and crumbly. Leave the pork to one side.
Quickly stir fry your garlic in the pan with a little sesame oil to release the flavours. Next, in the bowls you will be using to serve your ramen, add the fried garlic, sesame oil, tahini sesame paste, rice vinegar, soy sauce, cooking sake and layu for the soup. Shred your spring onions, then put to one side.
Bring 500ml of water to the boil and add your chicken stock according to the instructions. Add the spinach to the stock and cook for 1 minute or until tender, then put to one side. In a separate pan, bring water to the boil, add your noodles and cook for 3-4 minutes.
Carefully pour your chicken stock into the ramen bowls. Drain your noodles well, then add to the bowls. Garnish with the minced pork, spinach and shredded spring onions.

I have never had real Ramen, but would love to. It looks great. I just tried pho for the first time a few years ago and love it. The gyoza appear to be what are served as potstickers here, which I also really like.

Tonight I cooked red beans and rice with andouille sausage and parmesan crusted tilapia. I wasn't happy with the tilapia. The red beans and sausage were good. I couldn't wait until tomorrow for them.

I went back to Porto's Cuban Bakery and tried their special Summer Sandwich which was pulled pork roasted in a guava sauce with a spicy slaw.  I left most of the roll which was quite good but too much.  I love the plantain chips as a side.

That looks delicious Mar! I never like too much bread on a sandwich.  Texascajun, if you are ever in the Plano area, Mitsuwa Marketplace has opened a store there. Their food court has all kinds of Japanese food offerings including authentic ramen. Here's a link to the report I did on a visit to the Mitsuwa that is near to me:  http://forums.roadfood.co...rketplace-m649563.aspx

Go often to the Mitsuwa in Edgewater, NJ. Amazing gigantic place and more choice so Ramen than you can imagine. One of the restaurants in the place also sells amazing ramen bowls. Try to get to one, besides NJ there's also LA!

I also frequent a Mitsuwa in Los Angeles.  I buy a bowl of spicy pork ramen from one vendor and a mabo on rice from another and I mix the mabo (tofu in a spicy sauce)  from on top of the rice into the the pork ramen bowl and the sum of two way exceeds each of them separately.

I am having a root beer float. And some caramel M&Ms. And a bottle of Pinot Grigio. It's been an immensely stupid, frustrating, long, and horrendous day that's left me feeling very stabby.
