They're called Steak and Waffle in portions of Indiana, only. That's because there was already a small chain named Waffle House in Indiana. They are all Waffle House restaurants, and, although Waffle House began in Georgia, there are dozens and dozens of them in the north. All the Steak and Waffle places in Indiana are owned by the same woman who has the franchise for all of Ohio and Indiana.

The Menu at Steak and Waffle is not the same Menu that Waffle House has.

I've always considered the awfull house to be nothing more than a grease ashtray. The last time I stopped in one the air was full of cigarette smoke and grease which immediately took my appetite with it. I've never been back.

Well, there's nothing greasy about a Waffle House, but I sure do miss the cigarette smoke now that they're all smoke free in Ohio.

What does Huddle House have that Waffle House does not?

I've been to both, and I can't remember much of a difference. It's not like the Huddle House has Sushi, Pirogis or Carnitas.

Huddle House has a bit more of a variety.

http://www.huddlehouse.com/pdf/Menu.pdf

Waffle House:
"Where is your menu on the web site?

Currently we do not have our menu on the web site. Waffle House offers a variety of foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Please visit one of our 1,500 locations in the U.S. to check out what we offer on our menu."

That's an old menu. The 14-ounce porterhouse is gone. At least, it's gone from the Waffle house places in Ohio.

Darn! They took them off the menus here about six months ago. Why couldn't they have done it a few years earlier, when I was still buying them two at a time with eggs and hash browns for my grandson?

no no, you're not alone. I had several bad experiences at Waffle Houses in central NC. I often called them Awful Houses (both because the experience was poor and also because some of the places I went, the "W" wasn't lit)

I promised MH that I'd try a newer one in VA, but as of yet, I have not had the opportunity to give them a (possibly last) visit.

But, I have to agree, that in my experience everything was oily and lacked any disctinctive flavor. Not to mention the fact the the places were generally not very clean, especially the restroom. I had better breakfast experiences at Cracker Barrel.

I am in agreement with the assessment that the food a the Waffle House is laden with oil and is generally too greasy to even attempt to digest. In addition, I have found that the locations I've visited in the past few years (mostly central NC and occasionally Florida) have been FILTHY. There really seems to be no attempt to run a clean and hygienic establishment. The last one I visited had mud and filth on the floors, there was spilled waffle batter caked all over the food prep area, broken stools...just awful. I walked out of that one and never walked into another. There's GOT to be a better place to eat.

The Waffle House on South Blvd. in Charlotte must have idiots working there. I don't recall the exact numbers, but they got around an 80-something on their last health score and asked for a reinspection a month later. They then got 70-something. They waited a month and requested another reinspection and got either 50 or 60-something and got immediately shut down. The place was infested with roaches according to the inspector. They should have been happy with the first score and let well enough be. I don't know if they've reopened. I'll check the next time I drive by.

Hey! Is it possible to edit a post? I saw a mistake where I said the inspections were over a time of 3 months, but it was 3 times in one month and I wanted to make a correction. I can't find anything to allow an edit. Am I not seeing it or doesn't this feature exist?

We don't have Waffle House up here in the North, and I guess they're about as likely to move up here as the Carnegie Deli is to open in Little Rock, but I appreciate Mr. King posting the menu.

What's so bad about Waffle House? I can't speak for the food, service, or cleanliness but that kaleidoscopic Disney-colored train wreck of a menu would put me off breakfast for a while.

The closest Waffle House restaurants to you are in that great southern state of Pennsylvania. By the way, you can always turn the menu/placemat over for a less colorful version.

Hello All,
We have 2 Waffle Houses in Harrisonburg, Va..
I got off work one morning at 4 a.m., and went to
the Waffle House because it is one of two food places
open 24 hours.
I had never been there before and when I walked in, I
loved the atmosphere. I felt like I was walking into a
diner in New York City. I ordered chili and it was pretty
good. I just wish they offered fries.
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

The one i've eaten at in SC is also filthy. The Ketchup and all the condiment bottles are caked with goo and fingerprints- disgusting. Food seems to be just ok with somewhat small portions. And i think their waffles suck.

I took a 22 year old visitor from Germany to a Waffle House this AM in Frederick, MD. She thought it was one of the best dining experiences that she has ever had in the USA. She loved the "Good Morning's" from all the staff when we walked in. She could not believe the bantering between the cooks and waitstaff and said "This is so friendly; this is so American."

I carefully observed and there was nothing dirty about the place at all. All the containers and nappkin holder and salt and peppers were spotlessly clean. The floors were clean; the booths were clean.

There was nothing greasy about our meals. They were delicious. Of course, this was much more expensive than McDonald's but than again, it was 100 percent better.

I was in two different Waffle House restaurants in South Carolina last September and both were quite clean, and the regular large portions were served. The condiments were spotless, by the way. One was on Greer's Ferry Road in Columbia and the other was at an exit off Interstate 20. I seldom eat waffles, but I've always found the ones at the Waffle House to be excellent.

I'd guess that it all depends on the shift managers and general manager, or however they run them management wise. You'd think corporate would keep a closer eye on the units so they're not embarrassed like they were in Charlotte.

There are times i love eating at Waffle House. I enjoy their waffle loaded with butter and syrup, along with (I think it is the All Star Special) and a double order of hashbrowns, scattered smothered, covered, chunked, topped, peppered & capped, or all the way hold the diced.

You gotta love their efficiency too.
