Went out last night to mark the occasion of a coworker's retirement. This was the same older German-Polish fellow who brought his excellent bigos
to a few of our potlucks. He put in twenty years at our hospital, and thirty years for I.T. in general, specializing in mainfraimes, AIX systems, and storage. We went to the East Side Restaurant
in New Britain.
This was the only photo I took that captured any of the interior of the place, but it's enough to show you the general decor. Those are huge glass mugs hanging from the ceiling. My retiring coworker is second from left.
Already on the table when I got there were bowls of some kind of sweet cabbage, and cottage cheese with horseradish.
Top is a sweet mixture of turnips, carrots, and I'm not sure what else... but it was complex and incredibly good. Someone else ordered it, and it's not listed on the online menu, so I'll probably have to find out next week at work.
This was my order, the sausage sampler plate: knockwurst, "German sausage", and bratwurst. The German sausage seemed similar to Weisswurst, but grilled instead of boiled. Whatever it was, it was easily the best of the three.
There were plenty of potato pancakes to go around ...
... with, of course, sour cream and applesauce.
Here are some things that my coworkers ordered. A giant Bavarian pretzel:
Honestly not sure what this is - I read the online menu multiple times trying to match it up:
Jaeger schnitzel with spaetzle:
Fried mozzarella and wings for those not in the mood for German fare:
And lots and lots and lots of beer.
It was a fun occasion and the food was certainly appropriate for it. East Side had been on my list for a while, along with Alpenhaus
out in New Milford. I suppose I hadn't gotten to it sooner because this kind of place tends to be best enjoyed by groups, and groups aren't usually my thing. I suspect that if I did go to Alpenhaus solo, I would end up ordering a few items intended for sharing, and taking most of the food home. Not that that's necessarily a dealbreaker...
