Winter of Dis-Contingent or The North Avenue Freeze-Out - October 14, 2017

Pie Diva & I had breakfast at Ted's Ice Cream & Restaurant on North Avenue in Wauwatosa this morning. Ted's is a great diner with seating ala Solly's (apparently ex-Senator Kohl really likes lunch counters).

Anyway, we've been thinking that North Avenue is a Roadfood-rich environment and took this opportunity to drive the length of North into Milwaukee looking for attractions. Besides previous favorites (McBob's, Jakes, Ray's Liquor, et al) we came across something new for everyone. For ScreamingChicken there's Gold Rush Chicken. Belaire Cantina might appeal to MFL. Rosebud Cinema (REAL BUTTERED popcorn) will make a relaxing break. And there are enough wig & hair extension shops to meet all of BuddyRoadhouse's needs.

I'm going to post an end-to-end list of attractions on North for pre-planning when I get around to it. We've got several Contingent outings in the works, so this one will have to wait.

As long as we're posting Contingent wishlists, I've got an outing I was hesitant to suggest until recently.

Back in 2013, Tribune Cheap Eats reporter, Kevin Pang did a beautiful piece on authentic Taquerias along the Fox River; text here and photos here.  I was reluctant to put this tour out there because it would involve significant driving for the Milwaukee area Contingencies.  But then I had a pair of enlightening moments.

I recalled our recent Contingent tours of Jefferson County, Sheboygan, and Fond du Lac, and I thought, heck if we can make that trip, them dang Cheeseheads can surely make the run out to the Fox River Valley for some Tasty Tacos.  It's virtually the same distance trip as Jefferson County; just heading south first before heading west.

The other illuminating experience took place when we actually visited one of the places listed in Mr. Pang's article.  Although not really a Taqueria, El Pollo Giro puts out some the finest Mexican Grilled Chicken we have ever tasted.

Our love affair with Mexican Grilled Chicken started several years ago with a joint in Kansas City, KS (the dangerous side, naturally) called El Pollo Rey (King of the Chickens?  The Chicken King?).  It is was a tiny little dive, now transplanted to a bigger, slightly more inviting building several blocks away from the original.  The menu is simple: Chicken.  Period.  Okay, there are corn tortillas made fresh daily (possibly hourly) down the block at a neighborhood Taqueria.  There's also sodas (Mexican Coke, duh), rice and beans, salsa, and avocados which you buy whole and they slice up for you.  And (holy crackers) these amazing pickled red onions that look like grape jelly in a baggie until you taste them and are blown away by the intense tangy, oniony flavor.

Chickens at both El Pollo Giro (here in Illinois) and El Pollo Rey (out in Kansas) are sold by the half and the whole.  You can also get a plate of Buffalo style wings, but that's it.  No tacos, no enchiladas, no burritos.  Chicken.  Period.  It's marinated for hours, maybe overnight or longer, then slow grilled over a real wood fire.  It is astonishingly good.  Moist and succulent with deep chicken and smoke flavors that will make your eyes roll up into the back of your head.

There's a seasonal consideration for this tour.  Some of the places, El Pollo Giro in particular, are positively tiny and would require dining al trunko.  The later we get into the year, even with the promise of an el nino winter, the less appealing that prospect becomes.  Unless we have a very warm November, I think this one will need to wait until Spring, 2016.

So set your GPS to 40 miles southwest of Chicago and get your taste buds ready for a Taqueria and Grilled Chicken assault next year.

Get your North Avenue run on the books.  I don't think that one will require any special weather conditions.

Given this Sunday's Apple Picking excursion and the upcoming Supper Club possibilities in October and November, we may be running out of weekends for a Taco Tour this year.  But if we get a mild autumn, I'd still be up for doing this trip in 2015.

Since there are no pie photos, I have nothing to add, other than The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show would approve of the title of this thread!

So is IL state road 31 known as the Taqueria Throughway?

Incidentally, authentic Tasty Tacos are found in Iowa.

As I went about my business today, my mind wandered to this thread and got me thinking, my post #4 above might have been construed as a hijacking of the thread.  I hope that wasn't the case, as it was not my intent.

I took my cues from JRPfeff's last two sentences in the original post:
JRPfeff

I'm going to post an end-to-end list of attractions on North for pre-planning when I get around to it. We've got several Contingent outings in the works, so this one will have to wait.

I guess I took it as a sign that there was no urgency and no definite plan yet for this tour.  As such, it seemed like a good time to post another addition to The Contingent's "wish list" for future Eat & Greets.  If I'm mistaken in this assumption, i can have the post moved to a new thread, dedicated to that topic.

Again, didn't mean to step on anyone's toes.  And you can bet we'll be on this tour.  I'm running low on hair extensions.

Plus, I've got a little secret: I don't wear them anywhere above my neck.  'Nuff said!

Buddy,

I think I started with an invitation to hijack, so there's no toe stepping here. You will need to start a new thread for your Eat & Greet, unless there's a North Avenue on your tour.

I was also thinking about the North Avenue tour and had some additional points.

The City of Milwaukee has a "No Pursuit" policy for car chases and yesterday was the first time I've witnessed the consequences. While driving on North Ave. cars would pull around to pass me while I was waiting at traffic lights. In my younger days I would have tried to block them, but I was very passive about it yesterday. I also stopped once to let some people pass at a crosswalk and had at least 4 cars go screaming around me as the pedestrians waited to cross. There is also a major carjacking problem in Milwaukee. With all that in mind, I think for our own safety we'll want to keep west of Lisbon Avenue for the entire tour. McBob's would be the eastern-most stop.

The bakeries that Ann was referring to (I think), Rocket Baby and Cranky Al's, are morning-focused stops. Al's is closed from Noon-4:00 and Rocket Baby sells out of some baked goods in the morning. So we'll need to start the tour in the morning, especially for a breakfast at Ted's. This could be solved with a Fishfry on Friday, and a stay by Buddy in his favorite bedbug infested motel.

Yes, Jim, those are the bakeries I was referring to. Cranky Al's is known for their cronuts, and   Rocket Baby is just , well, excellent!

I've been blathering at every chance about North Avenue Grill to The Contingent. Today I had two firsts there: 1) I had lunch; and 2) I remembered to take pictures.

Breakfast at NAG is On Like Donkey Kong! We've been there several times and enjoyed several savory egg dishes, but their Honey Pecan & Bacon Waffle is always ordered with breakfast. This is their picture.

Today Pie Diva had the Pan Fried Walleye for lunch ($12.99). She enjoyed everything on her plate, especially the house-made tartar sauce. She said she'll order the deep fried walleye when we return for lunch.

I don't typically eat fish, but when I do, it is likely going to be tuna. I was talked out of the tuna salad sandwich and ordered the BLTT ($9.99) instead. An outstanding sandwich and the house-cut fries were as good as they look.

Who (besides Danny) is ready to do this?

We've been hearing about this North Avenue tour for over a year now.  I've even managed to sneak in the Fox River Valley Taqueria Tour in that time.  So let's make this a reality.  High speed police chases don't scare me, unless I'm the one being chased.  Pick a couple of potential dates and let's eat!

Is that Frisbee sitting next to the Walleye a Potato Pancake?  Any good?  If so, we're in!

Time to plan this thing. I give up on this summer, so I'll target this autumn - sometime in September thru December.

Watch for an invitation to a Doodle poll.

Cheers!

Doodle invitations have been sent out. Let me know if I missed anyone.

I am starting this really, really early this time so I don't have an excuse later. I'd like to target October, we'll focus on a date with the most interest and availability.

Looking at the Doodle Poll, some weekend in October will likely be chosen.

So what's the deal with ScreamingChicken and ChiBears15? Do they not get along or something? There is not one date that they can both agree on.

Here's another nearby option we tried today. Story Hill BKC - that's Bottle Kitchen Cocktail - offered some really exceptional brunch choices.

That's Pie Diva's Cheddar Biscuit Benedict in the back and my Stromboli Crepe in the foreground. Think about it - Stromboli Crepe - a crepe even Rogo could love. I ordered it on the recommendation of the waitress and absolutely loved it. Even before getting to the ragu & pesto on top, the filled crepe was like eating a pepperoni pizza. Everything we had here (a party of six) was really good.
