Also one of my favorites. We have a great Vietnamese restaurant across the street from where I work. A few of us go every Friday for pho (which according to the owner, is pronounced with a sound closer to phaw). On hot summer days, we sometimes have a rice vermicelli dish instead, which is the same fine rice noodles, with some cold salad chopped up towards one side, and your choice of meat on top.

Pho is awesome. Had my first San Jose in '94. An incredible variety - brisket, tendon, beef meatballs, tripe, chicken, veggie, tofu....

Dayton has a couple good spots. My favorite is Little Saigon (in an old Taco Hell!), which, incidentally, has a great veggie menu: Mekong also is good, on Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, just east of Kaufmann Road (no web site).

Here in Los Angeles, we have a lot of Pho places. Indeed, I live less than 2 miles from my closest place in Long Beach, and the heart of it ---called "Little Saigon" is only 5 miles away in Garden Grove. It's really a good soup. Make sure you check out the seafood versions too----very different but just as satisfying.

Yesterday was rainy and miserable in Boston, so we walked up the street to lunch at the original location of Pho Pasteur, on Brighton Ave in Allston. It hit the spot so completely that I wondered why I don't take advantage of living so close to what's widely regarded as one of the best pho restaurants in the country.

Because it was after the lunch rush, the put us into the far room, where the banquet table was piled high with what must have been literally a hundred pounds of basil that they were sorting and picking over for the dinner crowd. The smell was unbelievable.
