For truly different calamri try it at Toscani's, Belleville, N.J. Served as an appetizer, Toscani's calamari is very lightly breaded and then sauteed in a balsamic.
It is light, crunchy, appropriately resilent, and a refreshing change from the thousands of uneventul calamaris that are deep-fried and then served with unremarkable marinara...not that I don't like it that way, too, when in the proper frame of mind.
Its just that calamari, since it has invaded the hinterlands, has become the new fried onion rings. It's now on everyone's menu. Doubtless it's bought frozen and already breaded. They drop it in the deep fryer. That'll be $7.95, please.
But Toscani's....I'm tellin' yuh....fuhgeddaboutit! If you're within driving distance and like calamari, do this favor for yourself.
