RE: Best Pancakes in USA
In my experience, Sears Fine Foods is overrated (and overpriced). Not terrible by any means, has retro charm and is worth a visit, but the breakfasts are nothing to rave about. Dottie's on the other hand is worth raving about, from the baked goods to the omelettes. It is, however, tiny, written up in many tourguides and lines of tourists, especially European, "queue up" every day.
Best pancakes I've had in years were at a roadside diner in Random Lake WI called the Midway (next to a gas quickie-mart, the Wisconsin Aire Motel and a tanning establishment - not for humans). Seemed to be a morning stop for farmers (my friend's Dad calls it the buttcrack cafe.) Perfect wheatcakes: light, barely crisp on the outside, with a real wheat flavor. Exceptional light, thin potato pancakes, too.
