While in Ashland, WI recently Mrs. Chicken and I stopped for lunch at the Deep Water Grille
, which is part of South Shore Brewery
I forget which beer is used but the soup had a tangy, not-too-heavy flavor that I liked. It was beer, it was cheese, but it wasn't too much of either.
Mrs. C. opted for the chicken and wild rice, which also contained some ham that gave it a different but not objectionable taste.
Naturally, the onion rings are beer-battered...and quite good! I requested that ours be cooked darker than usual and the kitchen came through.
No visit to Ashland is complete without a visit to Ashland Baking Company
, where they make all kinds of good breads, rolls, and other baked goods. In fact, the bread that ABC makes for Delta Diner is so popular that it's available for sale, but only and Wednesdays and this was a Friday.
I'll bet the Bay's marquee looks a lot better at night than it does on a rainy day!
There's a nice park just south of the old downtown area and it even has an underground walkway to the Lake Superior shore.
Ashland's big on murals downtown.
Including one of the main ore dock
, which has been torn down to the concrete base.
And my favorite. Apparently in the Old Days the women of Ashland...
...resembled noted actor and musician Theodore Bikel
Did I mention that I liked the beer cheese soup?
